The hotel has friendly staff, some of whom were exceptional. Unfortunately there are shortcomings. There was a lack of resources for such a large group of guests. For example the breakfast egg station frequently had more than six people waiting to order. One of the things I noticed was a lack of cultural diversity in the staff given South Africa’s great variety of people. The rooms could use more light for makeup and plugs. Air conditioning did not work despite reporting this. The replacement of coffee supplies and bathroom products was spotty. For example. Sweetners were not replaced on 2/5 occasions. Toilet roll and bath products were not replaced either. The carpets were ragged at the bathroom. However you get the option of a bath or shower which was wonderful. For overseas guests note that the hotel does not provide razors or toothbrushes etc. Positioned perfectly the hotel is upmarket in price. The view from my room was amazing. The hotel could easily be up there with best. At present my rating has to be average due to price versus facilities and services. For entertainment. The bar prices are higher than average and the lounge area is lovely . A small outdoor area is available, but dominated by smokers. The conference rooms were lovely but quite large. An indoor pool(cold) and gym is available. Food quality is excellent. I think Southern Sun has to rank as one of my favorite’s to do training in due to the delightful staff attitude and good food.

We recently experienced a late-night flight cancellation and took a chance by staying at this hotel without having any previous experience with them. They were very friendly to our very tired and frustrated group (we checked in at 1:30 am!). And the next day they helped us by calling airlines for us and blocking our rooms in case we had another cancelation. Just great professional service at a time when we needed it. Plus, it is next to a nice greenbelt for safe and easy walking/shopping! And breakfast included!

I was not impressed by the treatment from 2 Gentlemen at the front desk, Eugen and Ethan, who refused my visitors entry to the Hotel, demanding a form of Identification from them. Right infront of us was a group of tourists whom were granted entry without being required to identify themselves. In my view, this was very inappropriate, looked down at and not treated with the hospitality we deserved from a 4 star Hotel. I am very disappointed.

Only 1 person at reception upon 14:00 check in! Waited forever to be assisted! Played a not even 1minute piano duet with my daughter later the same evening (note: very softly) and was unacceptable by Hotel! As informed by security, not even management! Thanks to fellow guests however for the applause, much appreciated by a 12 year old and her mother! We have done this in numerous other hotels in SA and abroad - AND HAD NO COMPLAINT!!! No sign on piano indicating - NO PLAY!!!!! Bath also not cleaned.

We stayed at Southern Sun Cape Sun for four nights. It situates in the CBD, a short walking distance to many restaurants and pubs. Many shops are near the hotel. Staff were friendly and helpful. Our room was clean and was on high level, so we could see a beautiful view from our room. Buffet breakfast was good with a lot of choices. We tried their buffet dinner, the food was average. I preferred to have in-room service, food was good and service was efficient. Wifi was not that great, especially in the evening, I had some problems to get connected. If I wanted to make a WhatsApp phone call, I needed to do it in early morning. I hope that they will improve their Wifi if they focus on for business needs.

Never stay here! My husband booked in on business. The company he works for left their card details on the system. To pay for his stay. They insisted he pay for his accommodation upfront on his own card! 17,000 Rand this was. Despite numerous telephone calls and broken promises, his money has never been refunded.

From booking to actual check in service was beyond excellent, especially Evan at reception. Hotel staff all friendly. Breakfast was excellent with a lot of choices. My mom and kids had mountain facing room. What a site to wake up to!!!. We will definitely be back next year. The only downside was the leaking bathroom.

Having stayed at the Southern Sun Cape Sun previously we thought it would be a good idea to revisit the once grand lady of the Southern Sun brand in Cape Town. What an underwhelming experience, we could have done much better! Our stay started on a false note right from the check-in. The staff behind the reception desk went through the motions methodically without really making us feel welcome, without a friendly smile but matter-of-fact, just to get us checked in and rid of. Security staff close to the elevators were just as sullen, not greeting, not friendly at all. Obviously, with Covid and the state of the economy, the hotel is a clear testimony of these. Before going out for dinner we decided a nice coffee in the hotel lounge could be ideal while we waited for our taxi. After seating ourselves and waiting for someone to see to us we gave up after 20 minutes of no-service. I then went to the bar counter, but it seemed that there was no staff member dedicated to this post with waiters moving in and out from the counter with drinks etc. not paying any attention to me. After 10 minutes of standing around I returned to my seat. Luckily a gentleman in a more senior position then enquired if we’ve been served and immediately went to sort out our order, returning a few minutes later informing us that the coffees would be on the house and apologising for the inconvenience. Having breakfast the following morning repeated our experience of lack-lustre, unfriendly staff. We were not met at the restaurant reception and after waiting for a while found ourselves a table. Nobody around hovering with a coffee pot as we have become used to at the Southern Sun Hotels, and we had to go and look for somebody and eventually got some coffee. The breakfast spread is not up to standard with scrambled eggs that have been made well before breakfast started and had become quite watery by the time we got to have breakfast. Very few attentative staff around during the underwhelming breakfast and nobody checking up whether we would like a second cup of coffee. We were really relieved we did not opt for dinner at the hotel, it would have most likely been a let-down. On checking out we were “greeted” by another unfriendly person behind the check-in desk. No questions like “How was your stay?” or “Have a nice day”, just a formality of extras that had to be paid for and that was it. We left feeling sad for the Southern Sun brand and the Cape Sun. We felt our business was not appreciated and we could have enjoyed better service and value for money elsewhere. My advice, think twice before booking at Cape Sun, I am sure there are better options.
