The Commodore hotel garners appreciation for its prime location near the V&A Waterfront, which many guests love for the easy access to nearby attractions. A welcoming and characterful atmosphere is often noted, although some travelers suggest the decor could use an update. The service receives commendations for the staff's friendliness, with a few guests experiencing occasional service hiccups.
Cleanliness stands out as a strong point, with the rooms and grounds being well-kept. While the amenities, including breakfast, are generally well-received, there are remarks about rooms needing modernization and better maintenance. Opinions on value vary, with some guests mentioning unexpected costs.

Detailed Reviews
Stayed here for 6 nights in January. It was a special anniversary so we were given an upgrade to a room with a view of Table Mountain which also had a balcony. Very large superking bed that they had decorated with rose petals, a nice touch. The hotel is very well located for the waterfront and the hop on hop off bus. The hop on hop off bus is to be highly recommended. A visit to Camps Bay is a must as is Table Mountain. The bar and lounge bar staff are really nice and good at their job. Prices in the bar and for snacks very reasonable. Breakfast was very good and the staff in the dining room are very helpful. All the staff were very smartly dressed. Guest Services were very helpful in booking tickets and Ubers which were cheaper than taxis and very reliable. Some excellent restaurants on the waterfront. The pool didn't get used by us because we had some windy days and other days when not so windy we were out and about. Room kept very clean and chocolates on the pillow were nice to come back to.

From the moment we arrived all staff were friendly, polite and efficient. We arrived very early but things were hurried up and we had access to our room within half an hour or so. The room was very comfortable with good storage, bathroom and comfortable bed. Breakfast is a pretty standard buffet but of good quality, the egg station is great and staffed with great cooks.
The location so near to the V&A Waterfront (3 minute walk) was great for me and felt very safe.
I really would recommend this hotel.
The only drawback for some might be the rather small U heated pool

A lot to digest? Read an AI-generated summary of recent traveller reviews.
We chose this hotel mainly for its location and that did not disappoint. It is less than a five minute walk to the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront. Otherwise, it is a very ordinary hotel. The rooms are dated with huge furniture in a small space. I felt a bit like Alice in Wonderland when I saw the gigantic armchairs in the sitting area. Room service disappointed when they forgot to bring butter or jam with our toast for breakfast, then left our tray in the room all day; it was still there when we returned in the evening. They couldn't get the butter to us in time as there was a power failure and, apparently, the lifts were out of action. Housekeeping did not change our towels and obviously used one to wipe down the sink, as they left it behind, balled up in one of the sinks. All these little things, though quite unimportant in the scheme of things, left us feeling less than impressed.

The hotel was situated about 5 minutes walk from the waterfront - which has lots of activities, bars, restaurants etc. This meant there was no issue walking during the evening for a meal with great views over the harbour.
The staff at the hotel were very helpful and cheerful. They managed to arrange a tour for us on our first day there, which was great.
The rooms were comfortable and well stocked with the usual stuff including tea and coffee making equipment.
This is a great place to base yourself for a few days in Cape Town

We stayed at the Commodore Hotel for three nights and had a somewhat mixed experience.
Our room was spacious and clean. Beds were comfortable. However, the outlets had clearly seen better days; there were USB ports that didn’t always work and the connections were partly broken. Two mornings we woke up to find that our phones had not charged (possibly due to overnight load shedding, not sure, but we did not experience this in our other hotel). The bathrooms were also spacious and the shower was hot, water pressure was ok. Shampoo and body wash were provided but in breakable bottles; one slipped out of my hand and smashed on the tiled floor, which is obviously dangerous due to being barefoot. Towels were fluffy!
The hotel has a traditional feel which extends from the rooms to the dining and lounge areas. We enjoyed curling up by the fire with our books to enjoy delicious hot drinks from the bar.
We only ate breakfast at the hotel, not lunch or dinner. There was a selection of continental and hot options. One morning the pancake machine was affected by load shedding but a staff member kindly made us waffles instead. This extra touch was appreciated, as was the fruit infused water! I enjoyed a pot of freshly brewed peppermint tea each morning, served at the table by a very attentive waitress (perhaps marginally too attentive as she enthusiastically cleared each dish before I had even put my fork down!)
Unfortunately the spa was disappointing. As two friends traveling together, we both booked hot stone massages; I tried to book a mani-pedi too but was told that this service had been cancelled while not removed from the list. This turned out to be perhaps not the worst outcome, as upon arrival for our massages, my friend and I were directed to the same treatment room. Fortunately we were comfortable with this but would have appreciated being asked at the time of booking. The room was also pretty cold. Then, midway through the massage we were informed that due to load shedding (which had begun prior to the treatment) it wasn’t possible to heat the stones. The therapists provided full body massages instead but again, given that load shedding had started before the massage, we would have appreciated being informed so we could decide whether to proceed with full body or return a different day / time for hot stone. The full body massages themselves were also hit and miss — mine was good despite being not what I’d originally wanted, but my friend’s was not enjoyable. The therapist asked repeatedly whether the pressure was good but did not then adjust according to my friend’s response. Despite this unsatisfying experience, the spa was unable to offer us any reduction in price. This made an otherwise pleasant stay somewhat disappointing.
Other than the spa, all staff were friendly and welcoming. The hotel is situated in a perfect location for tourists — it’s safe to walk around and there is easy access to the beautiful V&A Waterfront, which has plenty to offer.

We were on a very short visit from UK to watch our team London Irish play the Stormers in a rugby match. We arrived early at the hotel after an overnight flight from UK and were fortunate we could check in straight away. Had a lovely room on top floor with a balcony over looking table mountain and the waterfront.
We were booked on a room only basis but were able to purchase breakfast each day in the hotel and this was very good. Everything you could want, fresh fruit, cereals, pastries, hot cooked eggs to order and was a reasonable price too.
We were informed each day of the daily load shedding times (power cuts) but everything bar the air con and plug sockets worked still so no real issues caused by this.
The hotel is in a great location only a 5 minutes walk to the V & W waterfront and for us a 10 minute walk to the great Cape Town stadium for the rugby. You are spoilt for choice of eateries at the waterfront and so many shops too.
We managed to cram a lot into our 5 day strip but still lots more to see and do so an excuse to come back and stay here again.

Stayed 3 nights as part of a tour group . A walk in shower had been requested & I was very happy that this was done for me .
Check in was a bit lengthy with passports having to be photocopied.
However our room was fine , bed & pillows comfy, hangers plentiful, space for suitcases, good lighting, ok bathroom although the very vicious self closing door was a pain .
Bar staff friendly, nice terrace, pool looked inviting. Drinks very reasonable prices .
Ate in the restaurant our first evening with our Tour Group .
Fabulous dinner, a set menu with no options for change (possibly only if you had let the tour company know previously) ,for us the portions seemed very large though. Our steak was cooked to perfection, even though we were never asked how we would like it done .
We decided to eat here again as it was raining one evening, we chose “ local dishes “ , these were very nice . Wine prices vey good & great service.
Breakfast was amazing, a great selection of everything you could want . Probably the best omelette I have eaten worldwide, no skimpy teaspoon of filling here & cooked perfectly.
The hotel is located within a few moments walk along a well lit street to The Waterfront area .
We had a view of Table Mountain from our bedroom window…….shame about the building in front of it though !!!
We would certainly recommend this hotel, nothing for us to moan about or dislike. A great stay .

Stayed here as part of a cricket tour, great location for the water front.
Public areas lovely including a nice area outside where you can breakfast or have evening drinks.
Service was pretty good, staff were helpful and fairly efficient.
Our room on second floor was quite small and seemed a little tired, air con was noisy but worked well, no balcony, no where to hang drying clothes no pull out line in shower, which you need on a months tour). Chocolate at turn down was a nice touch.
Breakfast was pretty good with most things available although would have liked to have made my own toast ( you have to ask)
Had one bar meal which was average.
Did find someone else’s drinks on my final bill so do check if you are charging to your room.
Overall a very nice stay

We stayed here for 3 nights at the end of February at the beginning of our trip to South Africa. We had a great room and were provided with champagne and chocolates as they seemed to think it was our honeymoon! We have been married for 44 years! I checked with reception that we had been given the right room and we were told just to enjoy it!
It was great to be able to walk to the waterfront which is such a lovely area with great places to eat. We used Uber taxis for other trips which always arrived really quickly and were very cheap! We really enjoyed the breakfast buffet and thought that the choice was excellent. If we ever return to Cape Town we will stay here.

We chose this hotel as we had stayed here many years before and enjoyed it. This time we had a superior room on the 5th floor with great views of the marina and Table Mountain. The bathroom benefits from an enormous shower.
There’s a good choice of menu and you can eat in the restaurant or the lounge (there’s also room service.) Service in the restaurant is extremely slow, but then that’s what we’ve found all through our holiday in South Africa.
Breakfast was more successful as it was a buffet, so you didn’t have to wait for service (apart from the tea and coffee.) There is a good choice and generally the hot food is actually hot.
A special thank you for our laundry, which was returned with the shirts on hangers and in plastic covers, and the underwear neatly pressed in a tissue-lined box.
Staff on reception and in the restaurant were friendly and helpful. We would come here again.

Yes they did
The room might get a bit stuffy with 3 adults.
We had booked a normal room, not sure if the spacing for family room is more.
All the rooms at The Commodore have hair dryers. 5mins walk to The Waterfront, the hub of Cape Town. Enjoy.
June is their winter month, so could be cold and rainy? We went mid September and the weather was very nice during the day, but pretty cold in the evening.
No problems at all with the WIFI there. Didn't use the laundry however.
