After many countries and many hotels, I have never had the pleasure of such a warm and caring staff. From making me a huge breakfast for an early start, to answering my many questions, to always finding the friendliest cabbies, the Parliament Hotel is wonderful. Easy walk to District Six, the Gardens, and the Castle. Easy cab ride to the Waterfront or Table Top.
We're from the US and were suprised that in South Africa it was difficult to find midrange hotels - you can get pricy luxury or cheap and very basic, but the Parliament was the rare middle ground. Nice bath, comfortable bed, spacious room, and full service desk. The staff was always pleasant and happy to give advice or call a cab. The location is in the middle of the Cape Town bowl, so it's just a few blocks to many of the attractions, like the National Gallery and, of course, the Parliament buildings. However, at night the area is rather deserted and it's uncomfortable walking after dark, so we were told to take cabs.
