As repeat guests we were welcomed back like family with big hugs from Busi, Adam Herbert and Klaus the new manager. Immediately we were made to feel at home enquiring how our flight had gone whilst being offered rose scented cool towels and a drink of choice. The charm and beauty of the hotel is evident from the moment you enter the grand reception area whilst being greeted by the most courteous, polite yet warm and friendly staff. The “Nellie” is an oasis of calm and beauty with manicured gardens, inviting pool area and several dining options delivering impeccable customer service within a very busy city. With so much on offer you can quite easily while away your days in the most beautiful relaxing surroundings. It is evident that a lot of hard work and planning goes on behind the scenes to continually deliver such service of excellence and comfort to their guests. Well done and thank you to all the “Team” for making our stay so enjoyable and memorable , we hope to see you all next year. Ian & Karen Lynn

Our stay was memorable, such a warm welcome, all staff were so friendly, polite and helpful. In the Oasis Room for breakfast the cold buffet, fruits, breads, juices were just perfect, probably the best we have ever seen and eaten, unfortunately the downside was the 'hot breakfast' selection which was invariably just warm throughout our stay of 10 days. This fact was brought to the attention of the Manager of Food and Beverage, his words and action made it apparent he had no experience whatsoever behind the kitchen door. He suggested stirring the scrambled eggs to make them hotter, of course, this cannot work without more heat being applied. After 3 days of bringing this to his attention, chafing dishes appeared, unfortunately this was not the solution as they did not keep it very warm and things which should have been served crisp and dry (hash browns) were soggy and still cold. Housekeeping was superb, everyday our room looked as though it had been spring cleaned it was always spotless, all staff worked so very diligently in ensuring everywhere was cleaned to the highest standard throughout the hotel, they were a credit to the Nellie. We enjoyed our holiday, were able to totally relax and head home refreshed.

It is not often we manage to find a hotel with this atmosphere and hospitality, especially not in a big city. But here we are, having a couple of days and nights that we probably will remember for ever. The downside is of course if we dare to come back…and perhaps challenge these warm and positive memories…

I went for breakfast on a Sunday morning with three friends. We expected something special and different of high quality. However, overall we were disappointed. The breads and bread rolls were good. The pastries were limited but OK. The herring in mustard sauce was delicious. Two of us ordered Eggs Benedict Royale, salmon instead of ham. The eggs were cooked hard and there was very little Hollandaise sauce. Quite unpleasant to eat and with difficulty I ate just half. A friend had a chick pea pancake which was declared tasteless and unpleasant. The fourth in our party had an omelette made at the buffet which he was very happy with. It was a very ordinary breakfast as one would expect in an average country village hotel. Not to be repeated.

We did a day at the spa of the hotel and the team were so kind as to let us use the outdoor pool. The entire experience was amazing and as a regular spa user (especially in Asia) I am not easy to impress. The experience was above expectations and we had a faultless treatment. From our deckchairs in the garden we had a beautiful view of the iconic hotel with the Table Mountain in the background. What a treat!

Our 5 day stay exceeded all of our expectations! Wellington greeted us like long lost family. Every detail of our transition from the airport to our room was perfectly executed. Craig, the tea sommelier, captivated us with his knowledge. Note: I purchased a number of his recommendations to enjoy at home. And Rachel checked us out with great compassion as we grieved leaving the most beautiful hotel in the most stunning city. All we want to do is go back!!

My husband and I have been lucky enough to holiday at the Mount Nelson for over a decade, which tells you all you need to know about how wonderful this hotel is. Its not just the old-world charm and beauty of the hotel, or the delightful gardens that provide an oasis in the middle of a busy city that keep us coming back. It’s the staff who make the Nelly so much more than just another luxury 5-star hotel. They are the beating heart of the iconic pink lady, and they manage the seemingly impossible task of delivering impeccable, professional service whilst remaining warm, friendly, and individual. Before arrival the reservations team were in touch to ensure our stay would be perfect. They even sent birthday greetings to my sister (a month before we travelled!) On arrival we were greeted with rose scented towels, chilled champagne, and the warmest bear hug from the delightful Cristal on reception, who greeted us as if we were family. After a long flight it was wonderful to be ‘home.’ Cape Town has lots to offer, but if, like us, you want to relax and enjoy the sunshine, you may find it difficult to leave the hotel. After an incredible breakfast served poolside, it’s hard to resist the lure of a deeply cushioned sun lounger beneath a parasol that will be positioned exactly to your requirements. Smiling pool staff will attend to your every need, and surprise and delight through the day with tasty, complimentary treats (I convinced myself that the healthy fruit skewers offset the freshly made ice cream!) After a day in the sun, there is no better place to cool down than the planet bar. Balmy evenings sitting on the terrace are magical. Benson overseas this convivial waterhole and seems to be able to conjure up a table just when you need one. Like all the staff, his sixth sense is attuned to whatever guests need and he knows exactly which cocktail will hit the spot! A special mention to Sim who has the biggest smile, and the warmest heart. We were spoilt for choice about where to dine, as each venue serves delicious food. For an evening meal the Veranda was hard to beat. The food matches any of the top restaurants found in the city, but the décor, view and service outshone any of the crowded, noisy offerings outside of the hallowed grounds of the Nelly. As a guest I felt our every need was anticipated and our expectations exceeded. Busi who has the role of guest experience manager, seemed to know every guest by name and was always visible and ready to chat. Like a swan she glides through the hotel, gleaning snippets of information that she uses to elevate and personalise service. When my husband happened to mention to her that I had been unwell, rehydration salts and bottled water were delivered to our room within the hour. A lot of hard work goes on behind that calm exterior to ensure each guest feels valued. When LVMH took over the Belmond brand in 2019 we were concerned that the Nelly would lose some of her old-world charm and character. We needn’t have worried. Under new ownership the hotel has evolved and grown without losing sight of its heritage. The timeless elegance lives on, but the offerings have become more innovative and luxurious. Best of all the sense of family prevails, and in their smart new uniforms you can see how proud the staff are to be able to deliver excellence.

Cannot sing enough praises for this hotel. An absolute paradise with a grandeur that only occurs in fairytales. A feast for the senses at every turn. The breathtaking beauty of the grounds and historic architecture, the aromatic fragrances of the exotic but perfect manicured gardens and the delicious food round out the ideal experience. But what truly tops it off is the service like no other! Hats off to our guest experience manager, Gareth Crewe! The classiest, most attentive and generous man you can imagine. Gareth, along with his colleagues took the concept of “above and beyond” to a whole new level. Thank you Gareth and your team for being the heart of our stay, ensuring we left as the happiest couple on earth. And also a special shoutout to Rojeanne, the world’s most amazing masseuse at the spectacular Librisa Spa!
