No bells and whistles at the Sun 1 (formerly Hotel Formule),purely functional. Comfortable and clean rooms with AC. Optional breakfast a bit of a rip-off for the price. Within walking distance of the CBD and the Waterfront at a push. Right over the road from Artscape (Cape Town's premier opera and theatre complex). Safe and secure, with plenty of parking in the hotel grounds behind automated security gates. A great bargain, particularly for two or three people sharing. Impossible to get a late booking for December holiday period. Book early! No coffee making facilities in the rooms which is a pity. However, free coffee at reception while I was there. Great value for money.

The staff need better etiquette training when dealing with clients at the reception. We got there incidentally at change of shift and were asked politely to take a seat as it was lunch time and they were handing over which takes about 15 min. The lighter guy then sat down while the darker guy went to the back. He said he would help the three different clients who were just at least wanting to secure a room because he had started at 5 and he has knocked of. His tone of manner was unapologetic and disinterested. Eventually while shouting to his colleague across the building he gets up and serves us. His manner still was jot hospitable and in my opinion lacked courtesy. It actually felt intimidating at times. As far as I am concerned, the time of start of work etc is none of my concern. If he was tired, he should have sat in their rest room not in front of guests. And the shouting is also unprofessional. At least the darker guy politely asked us to seat while they handed over.

The rest of the stay was actually pleasant for a 1 star hotel, clean linen and bathroom. But these are getting really dated.

I have stayed in quite a few of these, one a week earlier in Parow and received acceptable hospitality.

There are building construction activities adjacent to the premises and a bit noisy but the stay wasppleasant. One can ask a room away from these activities.

We booked this one during Fifa world cup semi-final and it was least expensive option while booking one month in advance. We were afraid about location and quality. But it is extremely safe location right in the heart of the city close to everything. Quality wise, it is very basic. More like Motels in US with no luxurious amenities, but basic and clean bed and rooms. We liked it.
Couple tips
1) They won't check you in exactly until the check-in time. When we reached 3 other parties were waiting to check in. And everybody was checked in exactly at noon.
2) We did not have any trouble with our reservation. But someone else was complaining about the reservation screw up. Just confirm the reservation directly by sending email or calling.

Noisy airconds couldn't sleep, not conducive to good sleep. Split airconds must be installed because they are less noisy. Bathroom and toilet all in one space and water all over the floor. Broken tiles in the reception

During our stay at this hotel, we had the worst experience of all places that we have been in South Africa. First of all, ALL the staffs were very impolite and not helpful. On 06-15-2011 when we came back to the hotel at night we noted that someone had stole half Loccitane body lotion from the room 206. So we decided put all our goods inside the luggage and lock it. The next day was our biggest negative surprise. Unfortunately we forgot our mobile phone (sansung galaxy s) at the right side of our bed (room 205), when we came back to get it (about 3:00pm) it wasn’t there. We went to reception and we told to the staff what had happened. First, the staff asked if we were sure about it. We said that we had double checked before leave the room and we were absolutely sure about it. After that, he checked the number of the room twice at his computer, he went to the room directly to the right side of the bed, and found our mobile below the mattress and gave it to us. How did he know the exact place where was the mobile? And why our mobile was below the mattress? After that, we have to alert everybody to think twice before stay at any Formule 1 or any Accor hotel wherever it be in the world. Its a shame for a company like Accor. We are very disappointed.

I received an email on 10 March to confirm my booking for 19 April 2012. Before my flight I phone Formula 1 Hotel to make sure everything is fine. The receptionist didn't know my name or reservation number. I was then told my reservation number is wrong.

I was getting no-where and decided to stay at the Road Lodge, a wise decision. Don't bother booking online with Formula 1 Hotel, they are still the in pre-computer era.

My husband and I had to attend to business on the Foreshore, Cape Town. As we could walk from the SUN1 Hotel to our destination and we were looking for an economical stay, we booked for one night. We were very pleasantly surprised. The room was scrupulously clean as were the linen and towels. Pillows were good. There is a shower and toilet cubicle which was spotlessly clean. Flat screen TV worked well with SABC 1,2,3 & 4. Air-Conditioning unit in good working order. The bed is low but we found it very comfortable and we had a good night's sleep. There was safe parking and it is quiet. We were totally satisfied.
