One of the most homely and authentic hotels we’ve ever stayed in. Perfectly situated at the top of Bo Kaap, it has the best views of the entire city. The overall design, landscaping and gardens give the impression it’s been here forever !

The service is relaxed and unfussy but that’s part of the charm. We stayed in compound 2 room which was so spacious, private and had an incredible view of Table Mountain.

Daily freshly baked breads, cakes, tarts & the freshest fruit & vegetables - all of the food was delicious especially breakfast.

Gail Behr has worked wonders with the interiors to create such an unique feel.

Incredible value for money !

One of the best hotels I've ever been to. While the rooms are unique and charming, the location is one of a kind and the garden delightful - the staff is absolutely overwhelming in kindness and helpfulness. Never too much, always to the point. The Food is fabulous, the breakfast great, and Off-Season that experience is close to affordable. Big up.

I had heard about The Dorp a few years ago from various friends but it had always alluded me. I managed to book a table for dinner. We arrived 10 mins late partly due to the terrifying drive up the hill! The waiter announced he gave our table to some residents. Not a great start.
When we were sat down I began to appreciate how delightful the dining room is. High ceilings, incredible city views, eclectic but interesting furniture not to mention the art and old photos on the walls. This was a great room to be in. The super busy waiter doing the job of at least 3 scurried around and eventually took our order. It took from sitting to raising a fork an hour. I had that feeling of dread. You know how it goes right? poor slow service followed by equally disappointing meal.
Well not at the Dorp.
Let’s talk about the food. We ordered a broad choice of the wonderfully inspired menu of the classic faves and local cape Malay dishes.
The chicken mayo toasties were up there with the best. Toasted sourdough with tender chicken and mayo filling served with crispy fries. Their rotisserie chicken was also perfectly cooked and thoroughly recommend. We ordered the veg curry and saffron rice a nod to the Cape Malay roots of the property and local culture. It was a huge portion. It had spice and moderate heat but tasty. Finally the caprese salad with pesto was excellent too. The food was pretty faultless.
It more than made up for the slow start. Thoroughly recommend the Dorp for dinner. Can’t wait to go back. But maybe I will take a taxi next time.

We booked for 3 nights in March 2020, to celebrate our 30 th wedding anniversary. I highlighted to the hotel of this special occasion a couple of times prior to arriving, as well as that we are vegan.
1) Location and Hotel
Very special location, views and beautifully "crafted " hotel testifying to the creative talent of Gayle Behr.
2) Customer Service
Well, this is where this hotel experience disappointed. Hotel was low occupancy, and they put us in the "worst" room in the hotel despite it being very special occasion. It is called the worst room by the hotel, for a simple reason that despite it being comfortable, and edgy in design, its location within the main hotel and lounge/dining area, made out noisy. We had to ask more than once that the staff respected that we were guests. Gayle Behr may well be a design genius, but she was around when we highlighted to her staff of our dissatisfaction that the service, staff attitude and culinary options for vegans were limited. Running and managing a hotel at the 5 star level required for the pricing, takes more than design, and making your guests feel uncomfortable for pointing these things out. Not once did she make an effort to personally come over and take charge to sort out things.
3) Food - Limited vegan options despite hotel being notified weeks in advance. At the time, I recall there being one main option for vegans, which is ridiculous for a 3 day stay.
Summary- Go have drink or a light meal there to experience the setting, but I cannot in good conscience recommend staying over. Running a 5 star hotel at 5 star prices takes more than design.

I really wanted to see this place and so booked a table for 4 for a Sunday lunch. The view was pleasant, I hadn't seen the view of my home town from that height and angle before, so that was nice.

As for the rest, apart from the lady at the front desk, the service was lame, it's as if we were disturbing their quiet Sunday, so much so that the staff played pool in front of us while we dined. No manager or senior staff member came by to ask if we were enjoying our visit and a 'thanks for joining us today'.

The food was average and for what it was, over priced. The veg curry was surprisingly bland considering the location in the BoKaap, the home of spicy food.

I really wanted to see this establishment and was hoping to find a gem that was off the beaten track of trendy Cape Town eateries, sadly it was a huge disappointment.

Maybe the actual hotel is great, but rather go back to the original idea of restaurant for hotel patrons only where one expects that kind of service/food dining at a hotel while travelling.

Leaving Dorp Hotel with mixed feelings…
Location, atmosphere and decor 10/10
But I agree with other reviewers on the treatment/hierarchy of guests. I cannot reiterate the friendliness and helpfulness of staff and any uncomfortable moments are clearly due to instructions from above. The moment I stepped into the lounge area taking a pic (with no other guests in view) I was pounced on by a waiter telling me no photographs. This was while my husband was checking us in! Clearly I expressed my annoyance as I have seen MANY Dorp hotel guests’ photos on instagram. Another staff member came to apologise. I tried to ignore the incident and make the best of my time in such a beautiful setting. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and dinner was delicious … after dinner we meandered to the outside patio /casual eating section and a lovely fire was burning in fireplace. We decided to sit for a few moments. There was 1 other couple (foreign) sitting at a far outside table. The husband stood up and spoke to waiter who came over asking us to leave as the other guests have asked to sit there. To avoid any embarrassment we left. There is a DEFINITE difference in treatment between local South African guests and foreigners without a doubt … this is uncomfortable and disappointing. We stay at many exclusive establishments as local residents and this is a 1st. The constant ‘little reminders’ on how you should behave in the establishment is far too Colonial and not sure of its place in the current South Africa .. or does the owner discriminate against the patrons whose money she takes?

The Dorp is up there as one of the most wonderful hotels I’ve ever stayed at. Its location at the foot of Signal Hill is perfect for views across the city and Table Mountain, in beautiful Bo-Kaap which is vibrant and authentic. Every element of the hotel is thoughtful. The perfect mix of luxury with fun and quirky. There are books everywhere, which the owner says you can borrow but not take as they’re her “old friends”. No alcohol license which doesn’t matter at all as there is a cute communal bar where you can help yourself to gin and mixers. The staff are brilliant - fun, friendly and helpful. We wouldn’t stay anywhere else in Cape Town now.

What a fantastic Hotel. The views are breathtaking, We had such a lovely stay. breakfast was really special as well as all other meals we ate. Food is of a very high standard. Great coffee to and the most delicious cheesecake and Milk Tart.
The Staff is very friendly and service was excellent. the rooms are comfortable and views from the room are amazing. If I had to fault anything & this is really Minor then it was the loadshedding, and only the plug points in room does not work during loadshedding. everything els was 5 star plus. Thank you

An incredibly historic setting with views that will take your breath away, beautiful decor, attention to detail and outstanding service. A place you just want to come back to again and again. Gail Behr has succeeded in creating a place that feels both decadent and home like.

Het Dorp is amazing with it’s interior, location and views. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Can’t explain it, but the staff works so well together they understand what the people need staying at their hotel. But it’s not formal at all.

I would definitely recommend Dorp if you are staying in Cape Town.
