Good mid-range hotel in the centre of Cape Town. Not quite walkable to the waterfront unless you're up for a 30-40min walk. Nice bar/restaurant area next to Reception. Across the pedestrian area from a hotel with an excellent rooftop bar/restaurant called GiGi's on the Rooftop. Conveniently next to St George's Cathedral for Sunday morning services. Shuttle to airport costs more than Uber.

This is a great location. Right in the middle of everything, but it is in the central business district, which is very very quiet on Sundays. We stayed here for 2 nights at the beginning of our trip, and 1 at the end; 2 rooms both times. Our rooms were large and spacious, with a couch and desk and plenty of extra space. The only complaint we had was that our shower door was broken and no one came to fix it(this was in both rooms). Other than that it was great. The safe worked with no problem. The hotel had doormen, which was nice, especially when returning late at night – as soon as we got out of the Uber, people started approaching for money, some very aggressively. Breakfast was very good and had a lot to choose from. We also used the valet service on our last night, which was very smooth both dropping off and picking up; the overnight cost to park the car was ridiculously cheap compared to the US. They have a luggage wrap service – but I wouldn't recommend it, it was much quicker at the airport. Our initial reservation was for 3 nights, but we missed our connection and didn’t arrive until the next day – we were able to call and let them know, and there was no problem when we arrived. There are street vendors selling in the square – nice for a little shopping, but also they are a little aggressive. We were able to check out and leave our luggage for the day with no problem. Very friendly staff. Overall very satisfied.

good quality in return for value! i always opt for a chain managed hotel so that i can guarantee a certain level of cleanliness, toiletries, towels, bed sheets etc.. a simple modern decor for an express level of hotel in its chain.
staff at the reception were a little bit clumsy at checkin but the African spirit wins at the end. lovely people and very helpful sent us to refresh and shower at the gym until our room was ready and guided us to good tour operators throughout our stay and made us some restaurant bookings. too bad i didn't catch any names, but thank you!

Stayed here for about 10 days with my kids and husband. Really enjoyed my stay. Their Moto is “everything you need, and nothing you don’t’ so yes it’s basic and not luxury but comfortable, affordable and good basic breakfast! It’s right in the middle of everything, farmers market opposite who sell hot food and cheap yet brilliant sushi. McDonalds and kfc etc are also near by, there is a really nice food place called eastern bazaar which does all different types of cuisines only around £3 per dish- big portions so two can share! There are clothes shops next door and nearby! Only thing is that in the evening it’s not so safe to go out alone, be vigilant and don’t buy the beggars any grocery’s from the supermarket as they will only sell them on(happened to us).

Incredibly helpful staff at this inner city hotel. An early check-in was facilitated despite the peak period. The room is spacious and tasteful, yet modestly finished. Some items in the room need attention, but an overall comfortable stay, with good value for money. The breakfast staff were unexpectedly delightful, and offered to pack breakfasts to accommodate my morning outings and hikes.

The best things about this aging property are the welcoming team providing for car valet parking , the Dove amenities in the bathroom and the croissants at breakfast, but that’s about it! The hotel is not in the best location for a stroll in the evening with beggars, pickpockets and hookers part of the local scene.
There is no lobby or lounge area as such and the bar is as uninviting as it can possibly be -zero atmosphere..,
The room is dated, the bed not very comfortable and the minuscule TV has blurred channels with different volumes. But, the room was clean even if the cleaners do not react to greetings when finally appearing at 1530 hrs…
The breakfast hours are governed by a kiddy club system by assigning slots instead of extending the hours which would take the pressure of. The breakfast as such has a good and adequate choice and quality but the service is virtually non existing as tables are not reset at all, reset with items missing instead of availing cutlery at the buffet if management cannot manage like getting enough salt & pepper shakers for each table.
However what I found disturbing during my stays is the obvious lack of genuine smiles and welcoming friendliness which reflects poor HR management and lack of training.
I am a repeat guest and IHC gold elite member and if this Holiday Inn is taking their customers for granted because SA is booming than the GM and owners are on the wrong track in the hospitality business - a smile and friendly words would be more welcome than one tiny bottle of free water ….

We just encountered one of the worst service experience ever. No towels provided today after calling reception for over 30 minutes there was no response. I decided to go to reception for assistance waited for a long period as there is no reception staff available at all, after a long wait I asked a person that was assisting someone at the bar for assistance who is also supposed to be the reception person for help after ignoring me he goes and answers a call,, refuses to assist me screams at me that he is busy, refused to provide me his name and tells me to look at his badge he was addiment despite all efforts to get his name Jackson he would not provide me his name and finally walks away without assisting me. It’s dosgraceful and terrible. Don’t stay here it’s terrible the lovely city of Cape Town has much better hotels that provide a decent service and at least bath towels and friendly staff.

One can notice the racist behaviour towards Muslim guest from this particular person Jackson, he needs to be fired he is disgraceful, arrogant and terrible

Overall we actually had a brilliant time staying at the Holiday Inn Express. There’s reasons for the 3 out of 5 which I’ll get to.

Generally, all the staff were super friendly and the room was perfect for us as a family with a 4 year old. A double bed and a sofa bed with shower bathroom.

It’s centrally located and within easy walking distance of the V&A, Company Gardens and Long Street (where you get the hop on hop off bus).

We used Ubers a lot which were very convenient and cheap. I would recommend making your pick up point Wale Street though as we had several trips where the driver abandoned our pick up as they couldn’t work out how to get into Church Street.

If you hire a car, you can drive up to the front of the hotel and the staff there will park it for you at any time, day or night. They’ll also take it out for you ready to drive away, all for just R60 a night (approx £3).

You don’t need to worry about the load shedding as the hotel has a generator but it’s worth noting that if you go out and about to, for example, Simon’s Town, some restaurants might not be able to do certain food items due to no electric at certain times of the day.

If it’s a clear day, go up Table Mountain even if you didn’t plan to. Out of the 2 weeks we were there, there were just 3 days with no table cloth.

If you have children and the weather isn’t on your side, I highly recommend the planetarium, ten pin bowling at Lets Bowl SA (Claremont), cave golf/scratch patch (the one at Simon’s Town was better than the V&A in my opinion), SuperPark at the V&A and if you go to Spur for lunch/dinner, they have a small soft play.

The reasons I’ve given just 3 out of 5 are that the bathroom could do with being updated but the main reason is we tried to arrange a late check out - unsuccessfully.

When we arrived, we waited until 2:45pm to get in to our room as the previous guest, we were told, had asked to stay until 2pm. We said this was no problem, even though we’d already been wondering the streets of Cape Town since 10am with a 4 year old.

A few days before the end of our holiday, my husband enquired about a late check out for us. He was told we could have the room until 3pm with no additional charge but would be R1,000 after that.

We had a think and the next day asked to keep the room to 3pm on our departure day. The person on reception said no and noon was the latest we could keep the room but to ask at reception on our departure day.

I called reception in the morning and the person I spoke to said they would need to call me back…….. they didn’t call back so we just checked out at 12 noon.

As you can imagine, this was a very disappointing end to an overall wonderful stay. Especially as we had been so accommodating at the start of our holiday by waiting extra time to get our room.

Staff need to all be on the same page so conflicting information isn’t getting passed on. If it’s noon for checkout, it needs to be the same for everyone.

We stayed here for 4 nights from Jun 6 to Jun 10. Overall it is a good place to stay, centrally located and well connected. There are markets and restaurants nearby for all purposes. You can try the Eastern Food Bazaar for lunch or dinner. The breakfast spread was nice with almost every variety, loved their flavoured yoghurt, specially the cape fruit flavour. The staff is polite and helpfull. This hotel serves only breakfast, there are no other restaurants in the hotel for lunch or dinner or snacks however the bar is open until 11.30 pm. We arrived at the hotel early and had to wait for an hour for our room as it was not ready. Make note that they do not provide drinking water so you have to purchase them every day. They help to warm your food for dinner if you purchase from outside and want to eat in the room and also provide you with plates and cutlery. Considering the price as a budget hotel our stay was nice.

Clean rooms excellent staff. We thought the neighborhood at night was not very safe. There are many public safety officers patrolling the area and we never had a problem. The breakfast is not the world’s best and the ladies serve you. For a HIE it was decent and sufficient. When we checked in we were given a slip for breakfast. We were told only two times for breakfast 8-8:45 or 9-9:45. We were given a slip for 8am breakfast but breakfast is actually served from 6:30am onward. So we never understood the reason for the breakfast slip??? At first this created a problem with our tour pick up time. If you have a problem the hotel does provide breakfast to go.

The people at the front desk Sophilene and Maria were very friendly and helpful. They made the arrangements for us to get the required Covid test to return to the USA.

The hotel does not provide water and the vending machine to buy water was broken. We bought water at the market around the corner.

When we return to Cape Town we would stay here again.

Dear David734NewYork Thank you so much for the comprehensive review of our hotel. Firstly may I apologize for the confusion with the allocated breakfast time slots. Due to social distancing we try so limit the amount of people in the breakfast area at a time and therefore allocate 45minute timeslots. Once a timeslot is full then there are no more seats available for that timeslot. My apologize for any inconvenience caused by this. Your kind comments relating to the staff is much appreciated and will be shared with the entire team. We do look forward to welcoming you back to our beautiful city in the future.
