This was one of the best holidays we've had! Our 2 year old son absolutely loved the crocodiles. The chalet was spacious and had good facilities. The atmosphere at kwena made us forget about work and hustle and bustle of our normal lives. It was easy and convenient to get from the resort to other areas of sun city, like the entertainment centre and the main hotel. I must say a BIG thank you to Vanessa for being so helpful and accomodating when we were busy confirming our booking. Our whole family really enjoyed the whole experience of staying at Kwena chalets and we will definitely come again! Loved the croissants but a bit more variety at breakfast would be nice (especially if you are staying for more than 1 night).

Trip Advisor Kwena Gardens Chalets Sun City

This is my third trip to Sun City, which is always fabulous. There is so much to do there – Pilanesberg Game Reserve is next door; there is a water park with a beach, wave pool and water slides; a lake with para-sailing, jet skis and a cruise; a small children’s-type farm; horse-back safaris, balloon safaris and elephant back safaris; game drives in Pilanesberg (which has the “big 5”); a myriad of shops and restaurants; casinos; a night club and an under-age nightclub; a monorail; golf course; nearby predator park zoo; a crocodile park; birds of prey display; several hotels with pools and bars; and they were building a big stadium while we were there this time. Many people have fears of holidaying in Africa due to reports of violence, but Sun City is an enclosed resort and perfectly safe.

I have previously stayed (and written Trip Advisor reviews for) the Cabanas (great), but this time (travelling with a group of 15), we stayed at Kwena Gardens Chalets.

It is connected to the crocodile park and you can visit it for free (numerous Nile crocs, monitor lizards and cute meerkats). You have your meals (the inclusive breakfast, and lunch [which has croc burgers, croc steaks and croc nuggets on the menu] overlooking the crocodile pool with juvenile crocs. There’s a gift shop too.

It’s a little distant from the main part of Sun City; eminently walkable but that’s not necessarily an attractive proposition in the heat of the day or returning late at night. Fortunately, there are free shuttle buses that can be arranged at reception, and the monorail station is right across the road. We never found this to be a problem.

The accommodation itself was very good. We had 2 single beds in quite a large room with a wardrobe, safe, fridge and small kitchenette with a sink. The bathroom was also large, with a big shower (no bath).

The staff were fabulous – helpful above and beyond the call of duty (eg, trying to sort out a balloon safari at 4.00am). They provided access to the internet from the office (very slow, though), arranged transport and tours, and laundry at very reasonable prices, with a smile.

We wouldn’t hesitate to stay here again.

Was received very well. The location of the Chalets are awsome. Kids enjoyed the crocodile feeding time. Very quiet location in the resort. Chalets are kleen and fully equipped. Manager on duty did come and introduce her self after booked in think thats how you recieve your guests. Small problem with toilet and shower but could be fixed.

For a family that travels almost every year, this was by far the worst experience we have EVER had! Before coming to South Africa, we knew that it was a somewhat unsafe country with robberies and violence all over, but we expected our hotel rooms to be a safe haven for us - boy were we wrong!

My family had two rooms in kwena gardens in December, during the holiday season. We stayed at Kwena Gardens for 3 nights and on the last night we came back from dinner at the Sun City entertainment center to find that BOTH of our rooms had been broken into!

On a side note, before we left for dinner that night my sister noticed that she was missing one of her watches, but she figured that she just misplaced it so we decided we would come back and search through our things after dinner. Little did we know that someone had already snooped through our bags by then. Just incase someone was snooping around our stuff, we decided to pack all our valuables (passports, money, jewelry, DSLR camera, point and shoot camera, video camera, and my dad's laptop) in my mom's bag and lock it because we didn't want to entice any of the cleaning people into stealing things that were left out in the open. At first we wanted to keep it in the safe that was attached to the wall because that is the “safest” place in a hotel to keep anything, but we accidentally locked ourselves out of the safe in my parents room so we couldn’t keep anything in it.

In my sister and my room our handbags, wallets, all 5 of her watches, jewelry and our makeup bags were stolen. In my parent’s room we discovered that they took my mom’s purse, my dad’s laptop bag, which had all his important work documents as well as documents and confirmations for the rest of our trip. Then all of a sudden we realized the most important bag in my parent’s room was missing – MY MOM’S SUITCASE!!! Not only did her suitcase have all of her clothes, but as I already mentioned, we lost our passports, money, credit cards, photo IDs, cameras, video cameras, and laptop with her suitcase too! When we locked her suitcase we thought no one would be tempted to open her bag, but never in our wildest dreams did we think that they would just take the whole bag altogether! The scariest part of all was that these robbers were so desperate that they actually took the time to take off the safe, which was mounted on their wall. I guess since it was locked they figured there would be more valuables in the safe, but the joke was on them because the safe was completely empty.

Keep in mind that Kwena Gardens has one security guard who is supposed to watch over the chalets at night. When we came back the security guard had no idea what was going on and after us yelling at him for about 30 minues to call the manager, he finally did. Once the manager came an hour later, the police also shortly arrived to get all the information down from us. Apparently that same night the robbers tried to break into another chalet near us but they were unsuccessful. Thank God they were unsuccessful because that young couple had a 3-month old baby with them. That poor family was locked out of their house for 3 hours because in an attempt to break in, the robbers had messed up their door lock and no one could open it.
After the manager came, we explained the whole situation to her, and to our surprise she said that this must have been an inside job. She basically told us that her employees must have been involved somehow, because whoever these people are, they have been following us around and knew exactly when we would be gone from our hotel rooms. These people knew that the next morning we were leaving for Kruger National Park so that night was the best night to rob us. We suspect that the security guard and the front desk guy were involved, but we will never know! The manager even said she was glad we didn’t come back while the robbers were actually breaking into our rooms because she is sure that they would have hurt us in the process. Apparently some robbers had broken into the Kwena Gardens office earlier that year and did not only steal all the money in the office, but they also brutally beat up the old lady that was working there that night.

The day everything happened, the manager was very nice and understanding about everything, and even promised to have Kwena’s insurance cover our losses. After we came back to America we sent them all our bills of things that were stolen for insurance purposes because the management had asked us to. They got back to us two months later and said their insurance couldn’t cover anything because it wasn’t an armed robbery. SO basically, since we weren’t brutally beaten up or dead, our losses didn’t mean much to them and the insurance didn’t need to help us recover our losses. And of course, the police in South Africa are unreliable too, they never helped us or got back to us after the night of the incident.

The worst part of this whole situation was definitely the fact that our passports were stolen. We had to change our itinerary for the next few days so that we could go to the US Embassy in Johannesburg to get our temporary passports before we flew to Cape Town, and eventually, back to America.

We decided to stay at Kwena Gardens because we had heard all these great things about it from our family friends. However, after our horrible experience I would NEVER advise anyone to stay at Kwena. When you’re on vacation you want to enjoy every moment and not worry about how unsafe your hotel room is. They say that there is 24 hour security at Kwena, but how is that going to help if the security and the employees of the hotel are unreliable and involved in such situations?!

So what did we learn from this trip? Never trust any hotel, not matter how many great reviews it gets. Do not keep anything in the safe or lock your bag because then even the things that weren’t meant to be stolen (passports, IDs) will be stolen with the other valuables. Something seems off about these lessons doesn’t it? No one should ever think this way, but this incident has made us very paranoid about travelling and hotel rooms. This experience has left a sour taste in my mouth and I honestly advise everyone to not stay at Kwena Gardens so that the same thing doesn’t happen to you!

In December 2017, I unfortunately used the service of Kamp Kwena Creche. The ladies that were "supposed" to take care of the kids left in their care were pathetic to say the least. I left my 1yr6m and 4 yr old in their care, together with 2 older kids and when I returned to check on my baby as he had woken up from his sleep, i had the opportunity to witness the height of incompetence. There were other older kids there as well that were playing really rough and the ladies hired to care for our precious kids ignored the fact that there were kids playing so rough and other kids could get hurt.... they were busy on their phones the whole time i sat with my baby there. and to top it off, they looked as miserable as ever being there.

Who hires such people to care for our kids? Does the management of Kwena Creche even have some sort of surveillance to monitor the care our kids are given?
Or is the money all they care about? I honestly will not be surprised if i read about a tragic incident taking place with such people there.

I will never use them again, not even to watch over my precious dogs.
From one parent to another.... DONT LEAVE YOUR PRECIOUS LITTLE ONE AT KAMP KWENA.....

Just the thought of what i witnessed angers me to my core........
They should Close down if they cannot take proper care of our kids.

I would not advise to stay in Kwena Chalets. We had very bad experience and the hotel staff was also involved. There was a burglary and all our belongings were stolen. I am sure the cleaning staff when they came to clean the rooms took notice of what kind of stuff we carried and informed the burglars. The management promised to look into the matter and compensate but after asking bunch of proofs and receipts came back saying that the insurance doesn't cover anything unless it is a armed robbery. I am sure they know that seating in another part of the world we won't be able to do anything.

We are here for the Sun City CANSA cycle race and specifically booked Kwena for a couple of reasons. Perfectly positioned for the start, quiet and out of the main hustle of sun city itself. Sadly, this year, Sun City has erected a hideous conference centre in the car park and appears to have had event after event. We have had permanent noise pollution, blaring music from 6:30am on sat morning, ALL afternoon and right now, I feel like I owe someone a cover charge for the disco I feel is happening in the room. There is NO escape, no quiet and no rest. Good luck Cabana Chalets, I don't see a bright future for you, with this model. Be aware of you are looking for any rest, if traveling with kids or are looking for peace and quiet out of the city. This is no longer the place.

Inferior accommodation for R3000 a night. Black mould in the shower, loose tap fittings, toilet that was continually running. Obviously no maintenance done on the chalets for a long time. Disinterested reception staff, who could hardly bring themselves to help....asked for a shuttle to Cascades and was waved in the direction of where we must wait, no smiles, no courteous manner, no helpful manner. Breakfast a disgrace, thick slices of ham, dried out slices of cheese and horrible scramble eggs. Staff talking at the top of their voices in the dining room. We were then subjected to having to watch a croc being caught to be put on display for the day. Staff were rough with the terrified baby reptiles.
We will never return to this rip off place. Sun International should be ashamed to be running such low grade accommodation at this price. No management was seen at all for the duration of our stay.
