Disappointed in housekeeping and overall state of chalets. Linen was clean though, but furniture in living area extremely dirty and we actually refused to sit on chairs and couches but rather sat on outside plastic chairs. Paint was pealing off in bathroom and bath had mould around the edges. Chalets extremely dated and cleaning isn’t supervised.

good accommodation in fantastic location at sensible prices.
beware of 'dinner bed and breakfast' option. R100 extra to get R100 to spend on food in restaurant. eating R100 of food is a challenge. much better to pay for what you want but check that it is a la carte when you stay - some nights are a R100 buffet!!!!
shop opening times can be a little varied.

all in all good, clean and comfortable accommodation which i would recommend.

The 5 executive safari tents at Bakgatla camp in the Pilanesberg game reserve are private (not situated close to each other, all facing the bush), quite spacious and comfortable. The fridge was bigger than expected, there were also some mugs, wine glasses, water glasses and a wine bottle opener. A few tea bags, coffee and powdered milk was available, as well as a kettle. You can buy long-life milk at the small shop at the resort or bring your own. There was also a braai (barbeque) grid outside which we used one evening (we took our own meat, salad, etc and cutlery along). The bathroom has a nice corner bath with handheld showerhead. A fan, heater and blankets are available.

We went on a bed and breakfast option, which worked well, I would not recommend taking the all-inclusive option. Breakfast was average and the restaurant service not great. We had dinner from the menu one evening, which was OK, there is also a buffet available at R140 per person. Overall the restaurant and its staff had a tired, outdated feeling but was clean.

The swimming pool, although very popular since the weather was very hot, was not extremely clean with a lot sand at the bottom.

I was disappointed in the "view" from the tents, as it was suggested that by facing the camp fence you would somehow be able to see some action right from your patio. However, it is extremely bushy and you can't see more than a few meters, not that there was anything to miss out on.

Overall, the accommodation was average, but I couldn't help looking over at the campsites where other people pitched their own tents, made their own (tastier looking) food at a fraction of the price we paid. There is certainly not much value in staying in the executive safari tents, although it is convenient if you have only 2 nights or so to visit a game reserve from Gauteng and don't have the equipment to do your own thing.

Game reserve: It rained a lot so we were not able to do many game drives, but the reserve was beautifully green and the scenery was amazing. In my opinion Kruger Park is a better option for watching game and getting value for money. It only takes an hour longer to drive there, so we would definitely rather go there. From Johannesburg to Bakgatla took almost 3 hours on a Friday afternoon due to traffic and the fact that you sometimes travel on small roads through towns (definitely not the N4).

The Golden Leopard resorts website is like something from the early 1990s: no on-line availability, low resolution pictures, not a lot of information. They should take a serious look at the other parks websites in South Africa (Kznwildlife and Sanparks).

Very adequate, though not luxury chalet accommodation, excellent and plentiful food, super, relaxed atmosphere and lovely welcoming staff. No 'airs and graces' here, but a fine base from which to see Africa's 'Big Five' and more. One of the most attractive, massive outdoor swimming pools I have seen. Overall, excellent value for money, particularly when compared with other SA Game Park accommodation.

BAKGATLA Caravan holiday resort started of as a RCI International resort. Then it dropped and keep silver until 2010 and since then NO Rating. This info is from the Reception Office at Bakgatla.
My Personal experience is that the service dropped considerable from 2010. I am a regular camper at Bakgatla but the resort is at a very low level. 50% percent of the toilets don't work properly, shower curtains and shower heads missing, No warm water or very little warm water, shop badly stocked, electricity trip all the time, water problems, washing machine tokens, etc.
I notice they change all the electric geysers to solar-panel geysers but to my knowledge these geysers point mostly east with a lot of shade from surrounding trees. They only have full sunlight <50% of the day.
The roads in the game park is very bad and full of potholes.
I believe however that these problems can be rectified and it can become a International resort again.

I am staying at this resort from Sunday 30 sept 2012. we have been without water since then. the hole resort is without water . However very helpfull and friendly the staff keep the problem of water supply from their guests which leads to discomfort.

Aparently the Council dont supply water to the resort any longer and the boreholes are running dry.
Be aware off this when planning a trip.

When other options around Pilanesberg are running to four or five times the cost of a Chalet at Golden Leopard this looks like an excellent value facility, especially if purchased as a Dinner Bed and Breakfast Package. The chalets are basic and a little dated, but you are staying here for the location rather than granite covered counter tops or designer toilets. They serve that purpose absolutely fine. Dinner (as part of a package) was excellent value - good quality food, reasonably attentive service, even if uninspiring surroundings. Breakfast was buffet style, and nothing spectacular, but nothing wrong with it either.

In short, if you are here to see the game reserve, and want a super convenient location, you cannot really go wrong.

We stayed 24 - 26 August in Safari Tent 3. On arrival the staff could not have been more friendly, and this continued when they helped clear-up after the Vervet monkeys had finished eating all the sugar and coffee whitener after beaking into our tent. Supper was very good with al la carte first night and buffett 2nd, while breakfasts were excellent buffetts with all the usual cereals, fruits, eggs, meats, and lovely fresh pastries. Needless to say lunch was fruit while on a game drive! Combined with reasonable expectations of a National Park unit (this is not an exclusive rpivate camp), and the wonderful game viewing, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay back in the African bush.

My wife and I decided a camping trip to the Pilanesberg was in order so we headed to Bagkatla...the reception area is immaculate with friendly welcoming staff to take our booking, sadly that's were the warm feeling ended.

The camp site is an absolute dump with old broken braais and rubbish bins scattered around the once pristine camping site. Its so sad that this place has fallen into such disrepair, there was seemingly no shortage of staff wandering around aimlessly ignoring the litter scattered around...they seem more content to kick the plastic coke bottle out of there way than pick the damn thing up...what the hell are these people employed to do and where is the management to drive the upkeep and maintenance. On the night we spent there were only about 6 campsites occupied, we love rustic camping but the filth is down right disgusting and Bagkatla will never see us again. The name "Golden Leopard Resorts" conjures up all sorts of nice bush-veld images but wanton litter aint one of them.

The following morning we drove through the park which is still one of our favourites...its nice to see that The Pilanesberg Centre is being utilized...watching the large group of Wildebeest frolicking by the water hole was most pleasant and helped erase the Bagkatla experience. The menu was extensive and the plates being served to the other diners looked good.

We then proceeded to Manyane for our second night...this was a slightly better experience in spite of the broken sewage pipe running from one of the ablutions. In years gone past we were more regular visitors to Manyane but it has lost some of its luster and if not curtailed soon then it too will end up like Bagkatla.

SANParks must make Golden Leopard Resorts an offer and just get them out of a business that they just aren't interested in...these resorts need to be salvaged from the rot that has set in.

Do I expect a response from management for this rant?...Hell No!!!

Regards

Seamus & Lisa McGuigan.

I spent a week during March 2013 at the Bakgatla chalets. After reading some of the reviews on this website I was a bit apprehensive at first. so let's be honest, if you are someone who luxury and nothing else on your vacation trip, this venue is not for you. But if you want good value for money, it is perfect. The chalets are most adequately furnished and has DStv, an aircon both downstairs and upstairs and a good size fridge. The complaints about the lighting at the braai on the patio is nonsense as there is more than enough lighting. The braai areas as well as the chalets are cleaned perfectly every day and the staff even offer to wash the dishes after lunch. The water was also not a problem in the chalet during my stay. However, it does seem that there may be a problem with water as resort appeared very dry for the end of summer. Even the grass around the large pool was very dry. This is probably a municipal issue rather than a resort issue. If your main objective is to view animals in the game park I can definitely say that it is good value for money. If you spend the day at the resort, I would suggest that you consider other resorts too.
