Skirting the northern slopes of an amphitheatre within the Pilanesberg Game Reserve lies Shepherd’s Tree Game Lodge, the lodge enjoys unrestricted vistas of the wilderness area of this big 5 wildlife sanctuary. Sweeping patios and sun decks adjoin the generous guest entertainment areas and rim-flow swimming pool. A gourmet restaurant, open entertainment decks, cigar lounge and gift gallery are amongst some of the facilities that discerning guests will find during their African safari. The lodge also includes a conference facility and Amani Spa. Attention to detail extends beyond the pleasure of your hosts, and is perhaps only rivaled by the contemporary cuisine, freshly prepared by dedicated chefs. Shepherd’s Tree features 13 double and 4 executive suites accommodating a maximum of 60 guests. Absolute privacy is ensures through the linear positioning of the suites along an elevated contour line, and providing panoramic vistas of the reserve. Each chalet features full en-suite bathrooms, tea and coffee making facilities, mini bar and safe. Whilst some of our guests will find proximity to the Sun City complex appealing, most of our guests are at Shepherd’s Tree for the thrill and excitement of big game viewing from the comfort of our custom built game viewers. Qualified and experienced guides are tasked with the pleasure of interpreting the sights and sounds of this vast wildlife sanctuary. The reserve is home to the big 5 and cheetah, wild dogs and hippo. Guests are encouraged to join their guide and host on 2 daily safaris, designed around optimal game activity periods, these occur in the early morning and in the late afternoon and evening, the afternoon safari is punctuated by a sundowner stop before continuing into the night with the use of a powerful spotlight.

We badly needed a few days break and after seeing this lodge was offering an amazing Valentine's special , we promptly booked. this beautiful lodge met all my expectations for a luxury bush break . The place is a haven for the tired soul and I would have loved have spent another night or 2.
The game ranger Answer was outstanding and we saw 3 0f the big 5 plus the leopard tortoise. Getting up close and personal with an elephant heard was the highlight .
Rooms were immaculate and luxurious and private- the view is not much due to dense vegetation from the rainy season. But this is easily compensated by the lunge and pool deck views.
We were treated to a magnificent boma night evening in the middle of nowhere under a huge tree with lanterns hanging from it with single tables and being served by waiters ( no buffet due to Covid protocols.)Marimba music playing under the glorious African sky was indeed special and memorable.
Slept like the dead on both nights -what a comfortable bed ( pillows a tad soft but I had brought my own trusty pillow so all was well)
Food is very good .
Covid protocols were well adhered to, Despite the place being full it was up to all guests to take responsibility to be socially distanced, hand sanitize and wear masks, and it was very easy and possible to do so given the very large layout with lots of open spaces.
Highly recommended.
Will be back- soon we hope!

Everything about this hotel was fabulous. From the minute you arrived (being offered a refresher towel) to the moment you leave (being offered water for our drive home).

Everything is included (except drinks). Meals are lovely. Snacks are also delicious.
Saturday night they had a South African BBQ with dancers and music. It was absolutely delicious.

There are 2 game drives a day. Morning and evening. You can choose to do all or some of them. Our game driver was amazing - His name was Peace. So knowledgeable.
You get put with the same game driver on all drives. On the drive they also provide delicious snacks.

Room was beautiful. There is only an outside shower but there is an indoor bath overlooking the Pilanesberg. We loved shower. The room also has a beautiful deck.

Pool is amazing. It overlooks the reserve. And there are Elephants that always came to visit outside which was just spectacular.

All staff are super friendly and helpful.

I loved every second of this amazing place.

Our first trip out of Europe since 2019 - and what a trip it was, mostly thanks to our stay at the Shepherd's Tree. The lodge exceeded our expectations in every way.

Our room (27) was well appointed with all the amenities you could need - the outdoor shower in particular was such a nice treat. Plenty of space for a small family - and the plunge pool on our terrace was an expected treat.

The lodge is quite spread out, but staff were always on hand to ferry you between your room and the main reception/pool area. The spa treatment was great value, and the pool was magnificent, particularly in summer. Plenty of sun loungers with the most wonderful view of the reserve.

Like other reviewers have mentioned, it cannot be said enough that the best thing about Shepherd's Tree is its wonderful staff. Everyone made us feel so at home throughout our 5 days stay there, from the restaurant (in particular Piet, Oupa, Amos and the truly wonderful Betty), the guys at the bar who were always prompt with a cold beer, to the ladies at the spa.

The highlight of the trip, particularly for our 7 year old were the game drives. 2 drives a day took a lot of stamina (particularly the 5 am wake up calls) but has given us wonderful memories. Our guide, Njabulo was fantastic, patient, knowledgeable and did everything in his power to make sure every single drive was rewarding. When we had decided to postpone a game drive due to adverse weather, he did his best to accommodate us with a shorter drive later on.

We truly can't wait to return.

To start off: the game drive was fantastic. We had two very lovely game rangers who could answer any question and helped us see some fantastic animals (hippos, crocodiles, lions, giraffes, rhinos, elephants, owls, etc. etc.). So that was absolutely fantastic.

However, we had booked two rooms for 2 people each. Sadly one of the people fell sick with Corona just before the trip. To do the responsible thing we said that the second person for the booked room would also not come. So it was just 2 people arriving ultimately just needing one room. We forwarded the positive corona test to both the Lodge and the booking agent and asked if we could have a refund on one of the rooms or a voucher. This was denied. Afterwards we asked if at least we could have 2 people refunded (we would be paying for both rooms) as food and game drive would only be needed for two people. This was denied as well. It was taken absolutely 0 effort into helping us out. Both the booking agent and the lodge both refered to the other party as being responsible to decide about a refund/voucher/discount and neither side was trying to help. There was no proactive communication to us or any attempt at helping. If even they would have said "sorry we cant help and we are very sorry about that but here is a free cocktail for the two people arriving" that would have at least showed they cared. But they way the whole attittude from the staff was "your problem, cant do anything about it". I think with Corona there needs to be a bit more leaway and acceptance in the cancelation policies especially since the lodge didnt seem to be fully booked anyway. The two people who missed out would have been very happy to come at a later stage once the quarantine time was over and used the voucher. So the lodge would not actually have lost out on any revenue.

Felix Schaber We are sorry that you feel it is unfair for us to enforce our cancellation policy. We have always dealt with cancellations in a very lenient manner, especially if it is medical related. All incidences are handled fairly to ensure the resolve is mutually beneficial to both parties. After reading your version, we felt obliged to restate the correct facts regarding your reservation. You only wrote to us to inform us of the cancellation with less than 24 hours before your check in on the 4th of April, and this was over busy Easter holidays. We made a conscientious effort to assist you and requested proof of the Covid test results which you never sent to us. Even though you failed to provide the requisite proof, we still extended a gesture of goodwill to you, but we are perplexed to see that the generous offer of 17.5% discount was not satisfactory for you. We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed our fantastic game drives. We trust you will afford us another visit in future and more so the opportunity to experience our impeccable service which hinges more on our ability to follow through with our standards and policies and ensure consistency in everything we do. Kind regards The Shepherd's Tree Team

Absolutely amazing, I felt safe at all times. Definitely the right type of holiday during COVID 19 as there was enough space between people, sanitizers all over the lodge and the staff are extremely careful and extremely accommodating

- The game drives were awesome we had Njabulo he went the extra mile to ensure that we got a lovely experience and he was very knowledgeable on the wildlife.

- standard room : a dream, clean, tidy, spacious and always stocked up with the lovely tea and biscuits provided by the lodge. I going to be a bit fussy and say didn’t love the outdoor shower on the cold evenings but it wasn’t a train smash.

1. I feel that the agencies used to book the experience with Sheperds Tree Lodge need to be managed in a far better way. It appears that the prices offered on bookings.com vs lodge price is incorrect and hence caused a bit of tension on the day of our trip. The lodge itself managed the situatuon very professionally and acknowledged the fact that it was not our fault.
2. The 50% discount recieved due to lockdown specials were definitely well worth the money spent.
Had we paid full price, I would have expected much more as there is no major difference vs the other lodges in the area which are half the normal price of Sheperds Tree.

Overall we had a fantastic time. Game rangers were phenomenal and food was incredible!

The great thing about this lodge is that it makes no pretense of going in for that faux African look of tatty animal prints or thatched roofs in a gloomy hut. The rooms are modern, spacious and bright (great lighting) with large windows (with blinds!) and a fantastic balcony you can actually sit in with a good deal of privacy.

The bathroom is equally well thought out. There are two showers and a bathtub with a view. The outdoor shower is awesome – spacious enough for two and secure (the last venue we stayed at in Pilanesberg with an outdoor shower was terrifying.).
All the staff are wonderfully solicitous and helpful, irrespective of what role they occupy at the venue (another big difference to other lodges).

Food was excellent, with a wide variety and always fresh – one bit of constructive criticism – the desserts were the usual items like peppermint tart, chocolate brownies etc. Not sure who actually eats this stuff anymore, especially when you consider the relative youthfulness and affluence of the guests. So, a bit more imaginative options are required.

We’ve stayed at almost all the four/five star lodges in Pilanesberg – this was by far the best!

Everything about Shepherds Tree Game Lodge is wonderful, accomodation, food, game drives and the staff. We extended our stay due to COVID19 interfering with other travel plans. Despite being the only guests by the end (just prior to the lodge having to close) the staff were still warm, friendly and the service was outstanding. They were genuinely happy to still look after us anyway possible despite uncertain and hard times for all. We were impressed by the additional hygiene measures taken by the lodge (hand sanitisers, removing the buffet etc). Even with changes to dining options, all the food and drinks were wonderful. Since we had an extended stay we had numerous game drives - which were ideal to take our mind off the world for a few hours and see some amazing animals. Franco our guide, was amazing, very polite and informative - as well as patient and dedicated when we were the only guests.
Thank you so much Shepherds Lodge for a relaxing, unforgettable and enjoyable experience during the midsts of chaos. You were all wonderful and you made it hard for us to leave.

1. Entrance & carpark requires attention, looks like a 2 star B&B and not a 5 star lodge.
2. Welcoming drinks were average
3. Meals were of good quality
4. Service of waiters were poor, waiters uniforms weren't clean.
5. Meals was always served at the same place, you would expect a 5 star lodge to over different options or have the meals at different locations.
6. The serving of the teas were of poor standard, the food was hidden behind a counter and the drink options were very limited.
7. Drink service around the swimming pool and bar was very poor, we spend about 3 hours there without anyone asking us what we want to drink.
8. The swimming pool is ice cold.
9. The rooms were of good quality.
10. No night time turn down service.
11. Game drives were of good quality.

All in all the building and amenities was good but the service was of a low standard.

The whole experience wasn't value for money.

We have been to Shepherds Tree several times and it is never ceases to amaze me. The rooms are extremely clean with high quality linens and bathroom amenities. Our game driver, Answer, was knowledgeable and constantly managed to get into the right spot for the best possible view. The highlights for us were the two prides of lions, one after a zebra kill and the other chasing giraffes.

What, for me, sets Shepherds Tree apart, is their customer service. We happened to be there on Valentines evening and were treated to an a la carte boma, the memory of which will stay with me. Totally unexpected, the staff transferred a whole kitchen into the bush, lighting the way with oil lamps. They all went above and beyond to give their guests an unforgettable experience. On returning to our rooms we were greeted with a drawn bubble bath by candlelight as well as a bottle of pink bubbles and chocolates. Just unbelievable.

My thanks to the management for an absolutely incredible stay! We will be back!
