Skirting the northern slopes of an amphitheatre within the Pilanesberg Game Reserve lies Shepherd’s Tree Game Lodge, the lodge enjoys unrestricted vistas of the wilderness area of this big 5 wildlife sanctuary. Sweeping patios and sun decks adjoin the generous guest entertainment areas and rim-flow swimming pool. A gourmet restaurant, open entertainment decks, cigar lounge and gift gallery are amongst some of the facilities that discerning guests will find during their African safari. The lodge also includes a conference facility and Amani Spa. Attention to detail extends beyond the pleasure of your hosts, and is perhaps only rivaled by the contemporary cuisine, freshly prepared by dedicated chefs. Shepherd’s Tree features 13 double and 4 executive suites accommodating a maximum of 60 guests. Absolute privacy is ensures through the linear positioning of the suites along an elevated contour line, and providing panoramic vistas of the reserve. Each chalet features full en-suite bathrooms, tea and coffee making facilities, mini bar and safe. Whilst some of our guests will find proximity to the Sun City complex appealing, most of our guests are at Shepherd’s Tree for the thrill and excitement of big game viewing from the comfort of our custom built game viewers. Qualified and experienced guides are tasked with the pleasure of interpreting the sights and sounds of this vast wildlife sanctuary. The reserve is home to the big 5 and cheetah, wild dogs and hippo. Guests are encouraged to join their guide and host on 2 daily safaris, designed around optimal game activity periods, these occur in the early morning and in the late afternoon and evening, the afternoon safari is punctuated by a sundowner stop before continuing into the night with the use of a powerful spotlight.

WOW WOW WOW! My dad and I came to shepherds tree for 2 nights for a beautiful getaway. We’ve heard this lodge was amazing but it met our expectations and beyond! It’s a short 2 hour drive from Johannesburg and 15 minutes from the famous Sun City Resort. To start, Nomdumiso was a great help and made the booking process smooth. On arrival, we were greeted with refreshments and smiles. Everyone was just so friendly and always wanted to help. This is the most incredible staff I’ve ever seen. The game drives were beautiful, having Bright as our ranger was such a treat, he is extremely knowledgeable and friendly, there wasn’t a question he didn’t know the answer to. The rooms are amazing with a great outdoor shower and comfy beds. There is even an amazing spa, with friendly masseuses. The food is beyond. Whatever you order on the menu is incredible. There’s a new 3 course menu for every meal and I was looking forward to seeing what was available for each meal. Our waiters, Amos and Oupa were brilliant, such friendly, attentive service from them. Everyone is so warm and we had such interesting conversations with them. On the first night, there was a delicious braai around the boma, where we met the manager, Tafa. He is an unbelievable leader and will answer any questions or attend to any needs you may have. He is one of the main reasons this lodge is the way it is. He talks to all the guests and makes everyone feel special and welcome. He took us on a tour of the lodge and the rooms, he is very humble and even helps as a porter when needed. Hats off to you, Tafa! Keep up the good work guys. If I could give Shepherd’s Tree game lodge a 6/5 rating, I would!

Great place to stay and explore the Game Reserve, Staff were very friendly. Value for money. The Game Tour was excellent and our tour guide Sean Doyle was very knowledgeable and informative. The Brai for me was okay but would of liked more choice of meats.

We stayed at Shepherd's Tree for three nights. It is a beautiful lodge. The rooms are nicely spaced apart so you feel properly immersed in the bush. The Rangers were all very informative and friendly. The decor in the rooms and communal areas (esp. the bar area) is tasteful. We also thoroughly enjoyed our massage at their spa. The only letdown for us was that some of the staff, despite being very friendly, were not trained well. The tables at the bar and terrace overlooking the watering hole weren't regularly cleared and had empty glasses, dirty napkins and empty packets from the snacks on them on multiple visits. We had to keep going to the bar to get service at the terrace, bar and pool area and the bar staff also kept making the same cocktail we ordered differently every time and didn't know their menus well at all. Besides this minor detail, we really did enjoy our stay!

Our stay at Shepherds Tree Lodge was exceptional. We went for the game drives, and they did not disappoint! During our stay we were able to see lions, rhino, baboons, warthogs, cheetahs, LOTS of elephants, and so much more! You stay with the same group for each drive as well, so we were truly able to connect with other guests which was nice. The scenery during the game drives was also magnificent. However, even though the game drives were why we chose this lodge, the people and overall experience is why we are rating it 5 stars. All of the staff we so kind and willing to help with anything we needed during our stay. There are a couple that stick out-Willkid the bartender went out of his way to converse with us as well as making us some incredible drinks! We appreciated his hospitality. Now for our game driver, Lou-Ann. I can truly not say enough good things about her. She was extremely knowledgeable, I learned so much with each game drive. She went out of her way to make each drive memorable and comfortable for all of the guests. She was just absolutely wonderful, and we were so happy she was our driver. The lodge itself is its own experience. The food is absolutely 5 stars. We enjoyed everything we ate. The room was beautiful. We absolutely LOVED the feel of the outdoor shower. It was so peaceful on our porch, we could not hear anything, and we even got to see elephants from it! The watering hole was also very active when we were there. We got to see elephants, warthogs, and baboons at it. We loved our stay at Shepherds Tree and definitely plan on coming back in the future.

Try book for 2 noghts if you can. Booking for one night leaves you a little tired after trying to fit everything in. if only staying for one night it feels like a bit of a whirlwind trip, as you can only check in at 11am, then lunch is at 1pm and game drive at 3pm, then you back at 6:30pm and then supper till 9pm and then try bath rest etc, so you dont really egt appreciate th stillness and your room, as you out the next mroning at 6m for nother game drive, back at 09h30 for breakfast and then need to check out by 11am. But what an experience, great accomodation, food, service etc.

Shepard's Tree Game Lodge was incredible! The property is impeccable! The view from outside the room, the room, the Boma and they had an incredible BBQ after the game ride. The food is included and it is very good. Drinks are not included so all of them need to be paid for separately. The tour guides are friendly and knowledgable and they work hard to make sure that you have an acceptable experience. My complaint is that we disenfranchised at this property and we cannot recommend it. Mt friend and I were forced to split up and sit a part from each even though we arrived first. They did this so that they can allow another couple that we were familiar with to sit together. They showed favoritism to another guest at our expense. We were shocked as we have never experienced anything like this before, I called the front desk and spoke with the staff, They apologized and said they would report to the general manager, but the GM did not discuss anything with us and we never heard another word about it.

Dear TravelMother2015 On behalf of Shepherd’s Tree Game Lodge, please allow me to extend a heartfelt apology to you and your friend that one of our guides did not conduct herself in the appropriate manner as expected of all our guides. The sitting arrangements in our safari vehicles is on a first come first served basis, and you should never have been asked to split to accommodate other guests. At Shepherd’s Tree, all our guests are equal and we are embarrassed and disappointed to say the least, that this unfortunate occurrence created the wrong perception and also dampened an otherwise enjoyable experience for you. Sadly the report you logged at the Front desk was not escalated to me and I was not aware of this incident. I have taken steps internally with all involved parties to ensure this does not recur in future. In closing, allow me to sincerely thank you for bringing this to my attention. It is only through constructive feedback such as this that we are able to maintain and where possible, exceed our valued guests’ expectations and for that we are very grateful. I look forward to hosting you at Shepherd’s Tree sometime in future if travel opportunities allows it. Kind regards The Shepherd's Tree Team

I came here with almost zero expectations, so of course they were massively exceeded - I had the most amazing weekend at the Shepherds Tree Lodge. After only having had about a weeks notice before a business trip to SA, I had made no plans for something to do at the weekend - but needed to get out of the city. A last minute booking on the Thursday secured me the last room in the Lodge (which was recommended by a colleague who had visited). Arriving quite late on Friday after a 2.5 hour drive from the citry, I was greeted by a Rhino crossing the road at the entrance. What a welcome! THings only got better. A wonderful room/lodge, with great views across the park from the balcony, bath and outside shower (a bit chilly to use early morning, but what do you expect in winter!). The food was fantastic, and the service from all the staff was friendly and attentive without being overbearing. But of course the highlights came during the game drive, when we not only toured the outstanding landscape of the extinct volcano, but came very close to so many animals - a very emotional expereince. It was great to be with basically the same group for the 3 drives I was able to do, and was made feel welcome both by all of them as well as the guide. At no time was I made to feel like a 'spare wheel', as a solo traveller. We were treated to a BBQ on the Saturday night, which was a great way to end the day where we had seen so much. I was very sad to be leaving after the Sunday morning drive - but really could not have asked for more. I hope to return sometime with my family.

Even though we visited in the middle of winter and even the game found it too cold to come out of hiding sometimes, we had the best anniversary to date (and I am worried now what I can do next year). While everything was high quality and perfectly appointed, as you would expect from an establishment of this caliber, what truly stood out for us was the friendliness of the staff. We truly felt that nothing was too much trouble and that they were genuinely excited to here about our sightings and other activities. I personally learned quite a lot of interesting information about animals I though I knew pretty well already, so even when the animals were playing hard to get, we enjoyed every minute of it (and to be fair, I guide managed to get us close encounters with Elephant, Lions, Rhinos and after much searching Giraffe)

The accommodation exceeded our expectations. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The breakfast, lunch and dinner were tasty and well cared for. Once we had a bbq after arriving from an evening safari: super cozy. The rooms were spacious and very neat. We enjoyed our safaris with super motivated guide: Alex! Thank you Alex for your enthusiasm and knowledge. During the safari we received a well-maintained snack and drink at the sunset. We would definitely recommend this stay and it is really worth staying there!

We had a wonderful and excellent stay in Shepherds Tree lodge from 5 until 8 July 2022. A very competent ranger with Lo Anne, who showed us the Big Five and many more. Good food and friendly service, nice BBQ on Thursday. Tabel, driver of our shuttle from and to Jo’Burg airport, did an impeccable and safe job.
