We stayed with 10 people for a weekend at the Buffalo Thorn Lodge, and we had an amazing time. For me personally, it was one of the coolest experiences I’ve had in my life.

The houses where you stay are great and clean, good beds and a very nice bathroom. There is also air conditioning which is great as it can get quite warm outside.

The location is inside the Black Rhino Game Reserve, with wild animals everywhere around you. There are two game drives per day, one early in the morning and one late in the afternoon. The guide knows the most beautiful trails to drive, and on the way you’ll encounter all kinds of beautiful wild animals. He’s also very knowledgeable and you will definitely learn a lot by listening to what he has to say!

There is a small pool and a jacuzzi you can use to cool down when it’s hot in the middle of the day. At night you can put some meat on the grill and relax by a fire with some drinks.

All in all, I had an amazing weekend and will definitely be returning to South Africa in the future!

Buffalo Thorn Lodge exceeded our expectations from the moment we arrived at the lodge. Each suite was amazing, and to have the entire lodge to ourselves, was fantastic. Although this lodge is self-catering, the staff provide daily room servicing, clean-up of all dishes, set-up for our nightly boma fires, and many other details that made our stay so special. Jumari and Evan were outstanding! Jumari kept in constant communication with me before our trip and consistently made sure we had everything we needed to enjoy our trip. Evan was the perfect driver/guide for our family. He has a wealth of knowledge that made each game drive a memorable experience. A hugh feature of the lodge are the watering holes just outside the electric fence and the viewing decks to watch all of the animals that come to drink. Those watering holes and the design of the decks and areas to view these animals is a major plus for this lodge. However, Jumari, Evan, and the staff truly make the Buffalo Thorn Lodge a magical place to visit in the Black Rhino Reserve. Thank you so much to the team for making are stay a memorable one!

This is ideal for a large group, the lodge offers lots of spaces to spend time together as well as enough spots for privacy. The rooms were great, and the kitchen and dining area were perfect, but the highlight were the viewing platforms which offered us daily encounters with wildlife, including large hers of elephants. The lodge staff were also great and did everything they could to make us comfortable, and having the daily chaos of our group cleared up meant we were able to relax between drives.

Our hosts, Evan and Jumari, were really friendly and helped make our stay. Ewan was our ranger for the week, and his passion and expertise made every drive memorable. Being a keen photographer, my goal was to see and photograph a cheetah, my favourite animal. Ewan helped me achieve this on our very first day. The safari drives blew us all away, and truly felt like a once in a lifetime kind of experience. We felt so spoiled with what we saw, seeing animals like cheetah, lion, leopard, elephant, and rhino in the wild was a dream come true.

We were a family group and had small children with us, which Ewan was great at accommodating on the drives, even when the youngest member of our party played a game of peek-a-boo with a pair of lions.

I would recommend staying here for at least a week which allows you to do a mix of game drives, including longer drives that venture into the wider Pilanesberg reserve.

Thank you Jumari, Ewan and the rest of the lodge staff for such a great time.

We booked the lodge for the August long weekend. The group badly needed to let some steam off after the stress and strain of lockdown and Covid19.

We could not have done much better than Buffalo Thorn. The lodge is luxurious, well-equipped, spacious and has all the amenities you could want. Evan, Jumari and the staff went out of their way to make sure we had everything we needed. The lodge is perfectly located and we were able to spot Rhino, Elephant, Lion, Brown Hyena and a host of other game from the jacuzzi.

We can definitely recommend a stay at Buffalo Thorn.

Our family came to spend few days away from today’s Corona reality and to have fun together. This place was just perfect. The lodge gave it to us all. The ranger made sure we won’t leave the place disappointed. We have seen things on the game rides that were very rare to spot and not only once. We enjoyed fully equipped kitchen and the braai area. The lodge is situated by a small dam and many animals come to drink there so we could just sit and watch animals from the lodge as well. It was just amazing.

We had the most fabulous time at Buffalo Thorn Lodge. The lodge was amazing and the views from the deck were the best. We even had a pregnant cheetah that came to drink at the waterhole. Truly amazing! Ewan and Yumarie were the best hosts ever. Nothing was too much trouble and they made sure that everything "just happened" ...... Ewan's knowledge of the bush, animals, fauna and flora were out of a text book. We learnt so much each and every game drive. He's really amazing! We will never forget how to tell the difference between a white and black Rhino.

Our family had a rough beginning of December, with losing our Mum very suddenly. This trip had originally been arranged with her in mind, so we all went and she was with us in spirit. What an amazing getaway! From the attention to detail provided by Jumarie and her team in the accommodation and amenities, to the extensive knowledge shared with us by Evan on our game drives, and Hendrik on the game walk. We couldn't have asked for a more fitting way to remember Mum, and even the animals who came to visit gave us a show. Whether you're a solo/couple/group traveller this is something to be experienced at least once in your lifetime.

We had a wonderful 3 night stay at Buffalo Thorn Lodge. The lodge itself is well equipped and felt like escapism for a few days. It is perfectly set up to enjoy spending time as a group as well as getting some time alone in gorgeous surroundings.
The host couple were fantastic; knowledgeable yet chilled. They weren't phased by our 2 year old coming on the drives either!
Hopefully we will be back soon!

Two night family vacation from USA(including 3 grandkids). Accommodation and amenities outstanding: spacious, clean and well serviced. Main staff (Evan and Jumari) welcoming and attentive to needs. 4 bush drives with Evan (very knowledgeable) including one with him going at top speed to get to see the lions! (a highlight). Elephants drinking at water hole at edge of lodge another highlight. Highly recommend (another plus is that reserve is in malaria free area).
