Its a lovely place and friendly staff. But.... our room couldn't lock. The jacuzzi bath jets didn't work and the coffee area was full of ants. We couldn't have dinner there it wasn't available we had to drive across town to go eat and we were served drinks by the lady who does the ironing there are no barman. We will definitely stay there again if all the above mentioned in in place. We really enjoyed the swimming pool.

We have stayed many times over night in Upington and Belurana was by far the most comfortable and relaxing location. Beautiful river view, friendly staff and owners and a relaxing atmosphere.
Breakfast was delicious too.

A very nice venue overlooking the Orange river which was very full and flowing fast during our visit. Our room was very clean and private and was well furnished. A bit dissappointing that the venue (as a 5 star establishment) did not offer any meals even though they had a restaurant overlooking the river

We weren’t happy with our selected accommodation so we looked on the internet and found Belurana River Manor – listed as a five star establishment, and made a booking, and arrived there approximately 1.5 hours later.

On arrival, we could see some building works going on, which was not mentioned to me over the phone, nor was this acknowledged or apologised for. At reception, an elderly man was standing in the doorway. A young woman, who I can only assume was the receptionist/manageress, as she never introduced herself nor did she greet us, had to ask him to move out of the way. Apparently, he is co-owner and did think a greeting of any kind was appropriate. We booked in – we had to complete a form, which informed me if I was caught smoking in my room, I would be fined. Fair enough, but toning down the language may be called for here, and complete a breakfast form right there and then. Three types of eggs, bacon, sausage, tomato. Not exactly five star menu!

We were allocated rooms, and little plastic bags were removed from a cupboard, which held remote controls for the room. On route to our rooms at the back of the main building, we had squeeze past two cars parked in the pathway to our rooms, even though the parking lot was virtually empty – I suspect these belong to the owners too, one had a registration starting with “BELU…”, and then over and around building gravel and sand top our rooms.

Trellidors are fitted to all the sliding doors to the rooms. Charming. In my room, 8B, all seemed fine. I needed to use the bathroom rather urgently….only to find no toilet paper. I rushed over to my colleagues room but he was in the bathroom, so I rushed over to the reception – no phones in the room – to find the “manageress” on the phone, the same elderly gentleman behind the reception and a similarly aged woman in the doorway, whom I assume is one of the owners. I waited for the manageress to get off the phone, and then the elderly woman asked if she could help me. I said yes, I would like toilet paper in my bathroom. She continues to stare at me with this sour expression, and then walks off!

5 minutes later, the manageress comes to my room with the toilet paper. At no time did she nor the owners apologise for this oversight, and even say we will bring some to you immediately. Nothing. I thanked her, and closed the door.

The room itself;
• Little water pressure in the basin
• Water pressure from the shower would drop when another guest switched on the water
• Used champagne bottle in the shower, filled with what I hope was some kind of soap!
• One bed side lamp was not working
• The remote control for the tv and decoder would not switch them off, the list of channels available was not correct
• Blinds on the windows were broken in placed and wouldn’t close properly, nor could I switch off the three outside lights
• I had to switch off the fridge at the wall due to the noise it was making
• Walls are thin – we could hear the guest next door moving about, their tv, his snoring!
• By 08h00 the next morning, the building works had begun, right outside our doors and the floor above us!!!

My colleague and I met up for breakfast, and he said to me, don’t have the coffee it’s awful. By this stage I was really disappointed and annoyed. We decided not to chance the breakfast, so we wanted to pay the bill but the reception area was still in darkness and locked. We had to ask the porter to find the receptionist/manageress so we could pay our bill. She arrived 5 minutes later – at no time did she say good morning, how was dinner/how did you sleep etc…I paid the bill and as I was exiting the reception, the woman owner was entering – again, she never greeted us in anyway and I had to squeeze between her and the porter to get out. I got into our rental car, and as we were reversing the owner hurries over to my window and knocks on it…I open the window and she says to me “if only you were as beautiful on the inside as you are on the outside”!!!!!

Up until that point, I would have tolerated everything and just left, but by her making such a staggering moral judgement on someone, especially a guest, and then to insult me in such a manner is entirely unacceptable!

Therefore I also want to bring the following facts to your attention;

1. Your website confirms they are listed as a B & B with 4 stars – but several local and international websites, including SAA Airlink magazine, have them as either a boutique hotel, guesthouse, B & B, Self-catering, with either 4 or 5 stars. Which is it? Is this not illegal and false advertising?
2. Refer to the document “websites – false advertising”: doesn’t that breakfast scene look just amazing. What a way to start the day! Now refer to the photographs of the front of the establishment, and what is across the river. How is this possible?!!!!
3. Certificate of excellence on the bedroom wall is blank!

All things considered, I don’t even know how they managed 4 stars, let alone 5.

I find this establishment, but especially the service – in particular the lip service – despicable. I certainly hope you take upon yourselves to visit them immediately…insulting a guest is one thing, false advertising to the general local and international public is another.

Belurana River Manor - Upington

It is with mixed feelings that I do this review. A beautiful place but so badly managed. With mainly ONE person doing most of the work. Thank you Poppy, you are great and I wish that the owner would take a leaf out of your book. We stayed for three day’s but I doubt that we will ever return.

Likes
Beautiful old furniture
Great breakfast in a awesome setting
Nice gardens and a great view over the Orange river
Clean bed and bedding
Fully operational air conditioner
Under cover parking
Overworked Poppy, early morning till late at night. From reception to cleaning, waitress, gate opener, administrator, you name it, she did it.

Dislikes
Instant coffee, were coffee beans are required in a very good coffee maker
Dirty windows and window frames in bed and bathroom
View of scrapheap through dirty windows
Very noisy parrots in cage next to room
Tatty, dust covered artificial and plastic flowers in the rooms
Basin in bathroom with no drain connected to it. Open the tap and the water is on the floor
Dirty glasses in cabinet
Dirty microwave oven
Too much clutter in the bath and bedroom
Everything that is hung on the walls is either not appropriate, broken and/or skew
Intermittent working internet
Water spout in bath, not connected properly, spewing water everywhere
Two monstrosities as bedside lamps
Very dirty ceiling lights
Dust covered extractor fan in bathroom

The reviews and pictures looked good however on arrival you immediately see what a mess this place is. It classifies itself as a 'Boutique' hotel yet lacks simple hotel services such as a reception area that is fully manned, nowhere to get refreshments... its also not a guest house either?
The rooms are made up of what appears to be a lifetimes hobby of collecting junk and throwing it all at a hotel, and not quite being able to put it together into any distinguishable theme or character.. in our room alone we have some bizarre twist on French theme, with a bath in the middle of the room, toilet and shower hidden in a cupboard, grotesque fake chandeliers, a 'library' setting with fake books and massage chair and odd matching furniture. It's just a mess.
The grounds extend this odd theme with bizarre areas of seats and tables arranged around objects from all over the place, again nothing coming together in any way. There are two pools, of which one was unavailable all day as there was another function going on in their 'venue'... which was a but frustrating however we made use of the small pool next to the car park (?)..
There were just two redeemable qualities we identified. One was Poppy. She features in a few reviews and frankly the place would fall apart without her - you see no sign of an owner or manager, just Poppy running around seemingly trying to do absolutely everything from first thing in the morning until serving dinner last thing at night!!! She is incredible.
Secondly, the evening meal (whilst an odd menu) was delicious and served on the terrace opposite the river which actually makes for a nice setting if you can imagine away the noise of the road running right next to the property.
Overall, if we had had a car we would have checked straight back out however it was just a night stop and we endured it... but I wouldn't recommend and certainly wouldn't go back... unless I was going to rescue Poppy!

HI When we arrived on Sunday 29th we were booked into the first room closest to car park. There is a terrible sloping tile at the entrance tot he room. I slipped very badly on this and had a nasty fall. This is extremely dangerous. I urge you to change that slope into a step or put some non slip grip tape on it. I am black and blue and very, very sore, even today I can barely move.

We recently spent one night at Belurana River Manor, passing through Upington, on route to Namibia. We were warmly welcomed by the owners, whose thoughtfulness, with little extra touches was amazing. We were spoilt with a lovely little welcome hamper of a bottle of wine, biltong, crisps & a few chocolates on the dressing table. The room was spacious and comfortable, but just expect a little bit of
