This review is relatively objective, as whilst a visitor, I have been on lengthy annual road trips for 13 years, with a two year Covid hiatus. Great to be back!

I stayed (solo) for one night in January.

Easily found in the rather neglected CBD area.

What the website doesn’t make clear is that the parking (on the opposite side of the street) is enclosed, covered and guarded 24/7.

Friendly, welcoming staff.

It’s being marketed as a ‘boutique’ hotel - as seems to be the trend these days. Be under no illusion that The Kimberley Club is a superb example of a truly historic building being given modern plumbing, aircon etc without at all detracting from its authentic period charm. A true gem full of history in all areas.

My balcony room was spacious, well equipped, comfortable and clean. The high ceilings made the use of the aircon unnecessary for me, despite the high daytime ambient temperatures. Excellent quality linen. The bathroom was sizeable enough, clean and with excellent shower water pressure - not always a given with properties of this age. I particularly enjoyed the balcony for that oh so essential morning coffee.

The only reason my review is not 5 star is that my evening meal was quite disappointing. The steak was just acceptable by South African standards, i.e. high, but the accompanying vegetables were totally over cooked and mushy. One of the two desert choices was not available, with the remaining Malva pudding and ice cream being pretty poor - if that’s possible. Perhaps the cause of this was the fact that I seemed to be the only diner. Pity. The cooked breakfast was to an average standard.

Recommended for lovers of authentic historic properties.

Kimberley has a rich history and by staying over at this boutique hotel, one can experience part of it. It is as if one stays in an hotel during the diamond boom era in Kimberley.
The establishment is under new management that can only be described as best in class. We had a lovely dinner (the rump steak is recommended!) and a very nice breakfast.
The splendour to be enjoyed here comes at extremely good value for money.

From Glory to Story, the Club Hotel was once an exclusive gentlemans club of the high and mighty, with notable visits from the UK Royal Family (late Prince Phillips) and other dignitaries. Although the location in the heart of the city is geographically strategic in historical timelines, as with many other SA towns and cities these days, the CBD area is seemingly unsafe and bears security risks with the taxi ranks nearby and much foot traffic and litter a street away. The Club keeps a lot of memorabilia, guest books, log books, old photographs and an ancient fridge in the bar room, keeping the memories alive, in store and frozen in time. It does feels like a museum, and the effort of the owners in the upkeep and maintenance of the building infrastructure and workings are to be commended. The attention to the original colonial boutique style is detailed and meticulous, with opulent chandeliers and fine paintings, capturing a bygone era of a diamond boom.

FOOD
We were the only patrons of the hotel and restuarant when we stayed, so we received their full attention. The dinner was delicious, however my chips was not fully cooked.

ROOMS #3
With a century old hotel, what else can one expect! We visited the Kimberly Big Hole the next day and noted that the museum display of life and living (rooms from the colonial days) could be found in real time at the Hotel, as we noted the same type of light switches, still in operation at Kimberley Club Hotel. The splendour and grandeur has faded with time, but the wealth of the history and events add to the unique grandeur building that has stood the test of time. Basking on the balcony was glorious, despite having to listen to the hip-hop loud music blaring from the building opposite the street as a dweller hangs laundry. Some rooms equipped with a fireplace, and the spacious rooms are a luxury compared to modern rooms with smaller space. The bath towels were big and well appointed.

PARKING
Is found opposite the hotel, with a white security guard who assisted us that day.
In all, an enjoyable stay.

Between the walls of this historic landmark in Kimberley, you will find loads of history, old world charm, legendary stories, great hospitality and even spooks.

The new management team is putting in a big effort to bring this old lady back to her former glory. They are definitely off to a good start and even our complaint about the instant coffee served at breakfast was swiftly dealt with by arranging Seattle Coffee on the house and a promise to serve proper coffee going forward.

A couple of hours in the historical bar, engaging with some of the remaining members and the talkative barmen is a must prior to dinner.

Commendable breakfast served in the courtyard and I regret staying for only one night.

A beautiful old building that was originally built as an exclusive gentleman's club but has moved with the times and is now a beautiful hotel that has preserved the history but updated itself to meet the needs of today. Our room was beautiful, comfortable and well appointed. Our dinner in the Cecil Rhodes restaurant was very good. The hotel was quiet when we stopped so sensibly they have a limited but excellent menu to ensure freshness and quality. A great place to stay and eat at affordable prices.

If you're interested in the history of Kimberley and South Africa, this stop is a must. Food was excellent and service exceptional. Many of the historic pieces are still displayed in the halls and the bar. Two large billiard tables provide hours of entertainment. We truly enjoyed it.

The charm alone of the building and it’s original patrons is enough to make you rate this highly. Add to that the staff and check in and out experience and it’s even easier. Centrally located and well appointed. The club makes the ideal base to experience the new Kimberley staying in the old Kimberly

A beautiful building, in a dodgy location, with sweet staff. And sperm stains on the sheets. For real. Breakfast took nearly an hour to arrive. I hate to diss a place that is struggling, but when I complained, my complaint was dismissed. I was told that the manager would call….I am still waiting. Great shame

I would suggest emailing the hotel - I have stayed in a few rooms but don't recall room 7 specifically. It is on the second floor, I think it might be a standard room. If it faces the road, there will be a door that opens to a patio. In the one room I stayed in there were patio doors, but no window (if you want an open window at night but frankly it was so hot I needed aircon on all the time). I have not stayed in the rooms across the passage, in other words not facing the road, so not sure about the window/door situation. The hotel is very helpful with questions and answer emails quickly.
