This was an over-night stop, but would make a perfect base from which to explore the surrounding area or just relax between activities. Easy to find, a lovely setting, plenty of privacy, comfortable accommodation, and helpful, friendly and informative hosts. Not all units are kitted out the same way, so make your requirements known when booking. Would definitely stay here again.

What a gem. Situated on the outskirts of Kimberley on a large property under old trees. The hostess checked with us on our progress during the day and was at hand to welcome us upon arrival. She opened each of our rooms and walked us through explaining all the features. The rooms are fairly basic but totally comfortable and functional and being winter more than sufficient heating was available. Probably the only negative here was the water pump which was very noisy when using hot water. Breakfast in the manor house dining room was superb - typical home cooking.

I had a wonderful stay at Five Acres Guesthouse in Kimberley and was warmly welcomed by the hosts. The establishment is situated in a tranquil environment, with manicured lawns as well as an abundance of bird life. Despite me getting lost and arriving late the evening , nothing was too much trouble for the hosts, who were concerned about my safe arrival. I was too tired to leave again to a nearby restaurant, and enquired if I could be provided with cup of soup and toast. This was provided in a jiffy at no cost. Breakfast was served with generous portions, but be aware that breakfast is only served until 8a.m. Prior arrangements can be made with the owners - should you need to sleep in a little later. I would recommend this establishment to any business traveller as it fully catered to my needs.

We booked a room via e-mail with the establishment for one night, arriving 5 January 2011, departing 6 January 2011 for two adults and one baby. We booked a double room and were under the impression that the room would be fitted with a double bed.

Upon our arrival at the guest house on 5 January 2011 at 13:00, the owner was not there. We were allowed access to the room by the housekeeping staff. Upon our arrival at the room , we noticed that the room was fitted with two single beds. We enquired from the housekeeping staff if we could move to a room with a double bed – they were, however, unable to assist us as the owner was not there. The housekeeping staff informed us that we could wait in the room and then take the matter up with the owner when she returns from town.

The owner (Pat Lankester) came to our room at approximately 14:00 with a very hostile attitude and asked what the problem was. I asked the owner if a room with a double bed was available and whether we could move rooms. Her response to this was:

• “I noted that you already sat on the linen, moving rooms would be a problem”
• “When you booked a room you did not ask for a room with a double bed”

We were amazed at this response, and I, to keep the peace, said that we would stay on in the current room. The owner promptly left the room and did not engage in any further discussion with us.

The housekeeping staff then returned with a camping cot for our baby. They started assembling the camping cot and placed it right in front of our television set as no other space was left in the room. We noted, after the “camping cot” had been assembled, that the cot was of poor quality and not fit for a baby to sleep in. We asked the housekeeping staff to remove the cot from our room.

We were also disappointed at the lack of amenities in the room. No DSTV, very poor reception of SABC channels, no tea, coffee, biscuits etc. The room was very basic and not what we expected of a four star establishment.

My wife and I had a discussion after this whilst in the room, and decided to vacate the room and look for alternative accommodation at other establishments in Kimberley.

My wife returned the key to the owner and explained to her that we are leaving the guest house and would take up the poor service with the TGCSA. Her response was that she did not see anything wrong with the service she delivered, and that we can take up the complaint with anyone and do as we wish. The owner took the keys and left without any further discussion.

We left the guest house at approximately 15:00.

The level of service and quality of accommodation at this guest house was not what we expected from a four star establishment. We, furthermore, later confirmed that the guesthouse did not renew their membership at the TGCSA and was, therefore, not supposed to market themselves as a four star establishment.

Five Acres Guest House in Kimberley is the perfect place to stay when you want to relax. The self catering cottages is clean. A fridge, micro wave, kettle allows one to make your own coffee or heat some food. The garden is stunning and to awake to the sound of birds in the morning is so relaxing. Comfortable chairs on the stoep makes having coffee early morning a enjoyable experience. I can really recommend this for people travelling through Kimberley.

The rooms are housed 2 together, surrounding a large garden with trees and a large avery.

Although we booked it as a self-catering unit, the rooms only had a microwave and limited cutlery and utensils.

The living area furniture was old and worn, and I do not think it would meet 4* grading any more.

However, the property is near the N1, and if you only need a clean bed and shower, this will do.

This was my third stop at Five Acres and I will be back. The rooms are basic but have all you need for a comfortable stay. Normally arriving late is no problem with the owners showing you to your room. They have choices of singles and doubles. One little issue is the door to the room has a small gap allowing the cold air to enter the room from outside. It would be good idea to seal the gaps and let the heater in the room keep you warm. Breakfast was good but would have preferred freshly brewed coffee to the instant.

We unreservedly recommend this guest house. You get exactly what the marketing blurb states, plus a bit... And that is the trick in the hospitality industry - to surpass expectation every time.

Very comfortable rooms, little chalets with own verandahs overlooking lush green lawns and a large aviary. Great bird life.

Airconditioned, ceiling fan, very nice bathroom, comfy bed with good quality bed linen, TV and small lounge area. And covered parking - a big plus.

For a two-night business stay, the Five Acres Guest House was completely adequate. Since the establishment doesn't offer dinners, just breakfast, the owner directed us to a restaurant in the town which did not disappoint. The room was clean and the electric blanket was welcome with the frosty outside air temperature! The good breakfast was a nice start to the day. There was some road noise due to the guest house's location, but otherwise I had a pleasant stay.

Excellent hosts, lovely relaxing location which is very convenient for the airport, shopping mall and all attractions.
The comfortable, clean rooms are nicely spread out in a mature garden setting.
This would be our first choice of accommodation if we were back in the area.
