Stayed here for a brief period of time on a work visit. If you're staying in Kimberley, there are few better locations. Situated next to the 'Big Hole' and a very short walk to a restored mining town which is really cool and worth checking out, along with a few drinks at The Occidental :)

The thing that stood out for me here was the staff. Friendly, courteous and couldn't have been more helpful during our stay. A particular shout out to Matshidiso (apologies if I have misread the spelling!) on the front desk who was absolutely wonderful.

Some of the rooms are a little dated, but the whole property has an old world charm and a lot of effort has gone into the presentation. Would have liked a fridge in my room, but can't really complain overall.

Thank you for a lovely stay!

Somehow I was not able to contact the hotel by an email in order to get a pick up from the airport, a bit strange for a Protea hotel. I was able to get in contact with Crystalshuttle which offered a fixed rate of ZAR100, which was quite reasonable.
The drive from Airport KIM is approx. 15 min.
Yes I choose Protea Hotel because of its location next to The Big Hole Museum, which was my purpose of my visit to Kimberley.
Protea Kimberley is a Classic hotel, true to its old heritage, which I found very charming. I was lucky to have some peace and quiet during my short stay, and it takes you 1 min. to walk to the museum. Check in was swift and welcoming. I needed to keep my medicine cool, and the staff brought a fridge to my room, now thats what I call good service :-)
My room was of good size (ground floor), big comfy bed, stable wifi, telly, aircon, coffee/Tea & kettle (restocked everyday), 1 bottle of water provided everyday. Bathroom of good size, waterpressure very weak and only cold water, shampoo and moisterisor provided. There are no plugs for shawers/ toothbrush etc. in the bathroom.
The premises and the rooms was clean and well maintained.
I choose to have my breakfast at the hotel (ZAR195) which had a good selection of hot and cold items and great coffee. I also had two meals during my stay which were both well prepared and tasty. All served with a smile by the wonderful staff.
I ordered a wake up call for my early departure next morning, the young man at the front desk did not seem to care much about the request and unfortunately I did not receive that wake up call, only woke up 15 mins. prior to my departure making my departure a bit stressfull. Morning staff didnt seem to care much and wished me a good day....A sad ending to a lovely stay.
I was happy to visit Kimberley and I did enjoy my stay at the Protea until my departure.

Room and facilities are fine but can hear literally everything that the people in the adjoining rooms are doing and saying. Definitely going for the earplugs to get through the stay. The hotel itself has a lot of great character and is well located for the Big Hole.

This hotel is still advertising all their amenities. Yet you can only order room service as the restaurant isn't open, you can't get a beer, you can only get a sandwich for breakfast even though your hotel confirmation says your stay includes a buffet breakfast. There was no porter available on arrival. The receptionist tells you the bar is open but when you get there the manager comes and tells you the bar is closed because they can't sell alcohol on weekends, either she thinks I am an idiot or she is living in a bubble and shouldn't be managing a 4 star hotel. Licensed establishments ARE allowed to sell alcohol for ON SITE consumption until 22h00. So this is an apparent 4 star establishment, still charging 100% of their accommodation rates yet providing 50% of their advertised amenities and services....

We stopped for lunch at this hotel after a visit to the Big Hole museum. We ordered our food and drinks. The drinks were served, then we waited. After 30 minutes we had to go and find our watron to enquire when our food would be ready, and she found out that it was "nearly ready". Another 25 minutes later we were informed that the one dish ordered was not available, but that the other dishes were already getting cold, so what would we like to do about the unavailable dish?
The front desk acknowledged this as very poor service, and offered our drinks on the house. We eventually got a meal elsewhere.

We booked a Protea hotel in anticipation of the expected high standards. We checked in with a miserable member of staff, who seemed to be having an argument with one of her colleagues. Gave us the key, we found our room, 117 but could not shut or or lock the door. So went back to reception and was begrudgingly given another room by the same miserable member of staff, who still seemed to be having an argument. The room was small for 2 people, not enough hanging space, poky bathroom. Food - breakfast egg station couldn’t fry an egg without breaking the yolk and use toooooo much oil. Fruit and yoghurt ok. Toast machine rubbish, so slow. Peak times I felt like I had to fight my way through the crowd. Dinner we only ate there once. Constant banging, crashing and opening of doors the whole time. Starters ok, chicken curry very average, on the whole disappointing. Most of the staff were polite and very friendly. Will definitely Not be visiting this hotel again.

The Protea Hotel in Kimberley is a run down, with a few rooms refurbished. rooms have not nice views and the general upkeep needs some work - also no lift for luggage to upper floor which is an issue for guests when porters aren’t working,
Restaurant is barely edible, food is cold, service is not good and it’s so salty - we ate once the whole stay and never again.
Safety in the local area is a problem and we were advised not to jog outside the hotel security perimeter
Not a hotel to return to
The reception staff are excellent and trying their best.

Ideally located right next to the Big Hole. There are great views on the hole from the deck and pool area, and it is just a short walk to the visitor center to get on the main viewing deck.
Service was excellent as we got updated due to some misunderstanding during reservation.
Very modern rooms, which are very clean and well equipped.

On arrival, after a long journey from Cape Town, we were greeted by a group of smiley faces and helpful hands. Everyone was there to make us feel warm and welcome.
The staff were like friends, constantly checking up whether we were satisfied with the facility.
Its location is prime! Located right on the Big Hole, with a 2 minute walk to the best tour experience.

The facilities in the rooms are just a little tired.

We would highly recommend this facility.
Neo was a particularly helpful guy, so delightful!

We had a very good breakfast at the hotel as well as an average lunch snack. Luckily no food poisioning. Showers were amazing as well. I think you had a bit of bad luck.
