Welcome to KU DE TA, a B&B/Guesthouse in the heart of the South African sub tropical lowveld. We have 7 en suite rooms, all with own outside entrances, most with private, outside courtyards, some with additional outside showers and some with large farm style verandas ideally suited to the Lowveld climate. All bedrooms are individually decorated with solid, bold, Indonesian Teak furniture along minimalist lines to add to the feeling of peace, serenity and tranquility. The koi pond meanders all around the house, in and out of the courtyards, reflects a feeling of calm delight. The spacious lounge with its oversized daybeds is ideal for lazy, relaxing afternoons. We serve a full South African breakfast in the dining room, where all the windows and doors can be stacked away to open the entire space to the front garden. Dinner on request, please book a day before. The lush subtropical garden with it’s rolling lawn, majestic Royal palms, large dappled shade trees, orchids, epiphytic ferns, colourful shrubs and rare plant collectors plants is a cool escape. We're in the country town of White River, amongst all the splendours of the lowveld. Blyde River Canyon, Kruger Park, Historical Barberton and Pilgrims Rest. The Crocodile Gorge or en route to Maputo, or one of the many private Game lodges. Interesting craft shopping at Casterbridge, and dining at some of the finest restaurants.

A room at a place like this would probably cost 200 euros in Sweden. We paid 25% of that, R480, which is a couple of hundreds too cheap even with South African standards. The rooms are modern and big. The very friendly and service-minded host Johan has brought a little bit of south-east Asian design to South Africa. Even if there is no swimmingpool there (yet!), there is still plenty of water. For example in the small canal that flows around the house. It cuts through your private patio, and since the wall between the bathroom and the patio is made of glass you can even watch the koi fish swimming by when you are brushing your teeth or when you are taking a shower!
The water bowls on the main terrace are also very beautiful and gives you a sense of tranquility. The link --- has a lot of photos, that will give you a good feeling what this b&b is about.

This place is a must if you are into hotel design. And if you are not, it’s still very good value for money!

I loved our room, the gardens and water features and the Koi pond circling throughout the establishment. It was mid December just before the rush crowds so we had the place to ourselves. Tanya is an exceptional host, nothing was too much for her and she personally attended to making our breakfast. I am African so to me simple is best, with the Bali inspired décor and outside showers in a private courtyard I was completely happy. Most importantly the aircon was brilliant because the Lowveld in December is warm and muggy and coming from the Highveld we're not used to it, so the aircon saved us!! Listening to the frogs croaking into the night and the stillness even though it was a suburban area with the 'town' just streets away, I can't say anything bad about this B&B!! oh and the coffee in the morning made fresh in a Moka ... priceless!! I'll happily go back!

One of the nicest things about travelling through South Africa is staying at affordable B&Bs that offer a level of luxury Europeans can only dream of.

Ku De Ta is just that kind of B&B. It was recommended to us by a local. (Thanks Jan!) Our idea was to find a place to stay on the way from Jo'burg to Kruger. But we liked it so much, we ended up staying for four days.

What we didn't realise is that area around White River (Witrivier) is itself a really great area to explore. We soon realised what we had stumbled upon. Waterfalls, white water rafting, caves, gorgeous scenery, local produce - it has it all. White River itself is a fascinating town to discover for yourself what the new South Africa is all about. All this, and on the doorstep of Kruger.

Johan is not just someone who has opened his home to strangers. First ot all, this is no ordinary house. He has created a serene oasis that has the feel of a 5-star hotel. The rooms open out onto a patio that has a fish-filled pond and several modern fountains. In our room the feeling of privacy and space was wonderful. We especially liked the huge rustic bathrooms.

Secondly, Johan is a great host. He clearly knows what he is doing. He and his staff obviously work hard to make sure their guests have a great stay.

Johan, we can't tell you enough how much we enjoyed staying at your place. It helped to make our vacation what it was.

This guesthouse is very basic. No warm water! No hairdryer. Nothing extra. The breakfast however was nice as well as the garden. Centrally located but that is the only positive thing. I wont return or recommend it to anyone. No Dstv only basic channels.

Response from Jonlu, Owner at Ku De Ta B & B
Responded 02 Oct 2014
Dear Alisha de Lange Stayed with us on the 13th of Aug 2014, shared a twin room with a colleague. Booked in by the company Solidariteit Helpende Hand. (Solidarity Helping Hand.) We regret that you did not enjoy your stay with us. However, it was your decision not to immediately report your experience to us, as all of your concerns could have been successfully resolved, if only you gave us that opportunity. In order to be more environmentally friendly, the 2 rooms where you and your 2 colleagues stayed are fed by its own solar/electric geyser. Due to its location on the roof, it takes a while before the hot water reaches the rooms. If you notified us of the problem it could have been sorted out so easily. As a precaution I will from now on make sure that all the guests are aware of this. The hairdryer should be in the dressing table drawer, or cupboard, or if all else fails, the bedside table drawers. Regardless of that, it you notified us that you were unable to find it I would have made sure that a replacement hairdryer been brought to your room immediately. We have DSTV in the public lounge, or again, if you asked us we could have changed the channels for you as the signal is in all the rooms too. I am aware that there are lodges where every room has a individual DSTV decoder, but their rates are substantially more expensive than ours. Please ask Solidariteit Helpende Hand (Solidarity Helping Hand) to book you into one of these next time. We are proud of the service we have been providing to our customers as a Bed and Breakfast, not guest house. So as a owner I will endeavor to always make sure that all my guests enjoy their stay with us.

Exceptional service, cleanliness, hospitality. Very comfortable. Not really worth listing services and facilities because the owners of this Establishment will make anything available. We arrived late, requested meals at silly times, were in a big group and were not the easiest guests......and not once were we denied anything. Fabulous.

We absolutely enjoyed our stay at Ku De Ta! The rooms were fantastic – spacious, impeccably clean, and beautifully decorated with modern decor. The grounds were gorgeous as well. Owner Johann was very knowledgeable about the area and was helped us map out a scenic route to maximize our drive to our safari. His cooking was amazing as well, and our dinner at Ku De Ta was one of the best we had on the trip!

Standing on the outskirts of White River surrounded by the sight and sounds of gentle running water is Ku de Ta. For many Europeans that self drive from Kruger region and head for Johannesburg airport a half way stop off is much in mind. White River, and its little gem of Ku de Ta fits the bill perfectly. There is much to do in and around White River and when the day is done a return to KDT before going out to one of the many restaurants is a joy. It is possible to book dinner on site but we chose to eat out in the evenings. Before dining sit and take in the beautiful gardens, watch the fish swim past your patio whilst enjoying a chilled white wine. The whole place, they have 7 en-suite rooms facing magnificent gardens are furnished in tasteful style, it lends itself to peace and tranquility . Come morning time and relish Johan's breakfasts, they are superb and set you up for the day. A first class base from which to explore the region.

Johann, the owner, not only picked me up at the airport, but cooked the best omellete I've ever had....He also helped me solve a personal crisis. The room is decorated with ultramodern luxury, including a leather bedspread....Johann helped me with my safari planning, saving me more than $1,000. Located a short distance from Kruger Park and the airport, I couldn't have found a better location or a better or more helpful host.....This is a MUST stay at accomodation.

I've stayed at the Four Seasons once, and felt like I was there again, but at a ridiculously low price. Gary from Costa Rica

We just came back from Ku De Ta where we spent another 4 days. I have stayed in 11 different B&Bs in White River and this one by far is the best one. The setting is beautiful, serene and all rooms face a magnificent garden. Our room with the four poster bed was stunning, spacious, with a full bathroom as well as an outside shower! The room also has a fridge, a kettle, fresh supply of tea and coffee every day as well as a jug of fresh milk in the fridge...and even a hairdryer, shampoo/conditioner and body lotion!
Thank you Johan for your amazing hospitality, your friendliness and your personal attention at all times as well as attention to detail...you always go out of your way to please everyone. Thank you for your scrumptious breakfasts and delicious dinners...10 out of 10!!
I would recommend this place to anyone and everyone. Hoping to return to this beautiful part of the country soon!
