Detailed Reviews
3 years after my last visit I returned with my whole family and stayed in the guest house/cottage rather than the individual rooms (an unexpected upgrade!!!)
The hosts looked after us so well - "spoilt us" would be a better way to put it. Amazing breakfasts fully tailored to what we wanted. Even making a pile of pancakes each day for my youngest daughter - she usually only gets those xmas day ;-)
They sorted any trip booking for us (using the people/companies that I would have selected reassuringly). They have bikes, chairs, beach towels, masks - all things that make a trip easier and more fun.
The house part of Zulani we stayed in was brilliant. Great rooms around a private swimming pool. Well equipped kitchen and huge living area.
Thanks once again for making our trip to St Lucia a real treat

I stayed here with friends for a long weekend. It is a fabulous base for all the fantastic activities in the area. Run very well with friendly staff. The accommodation is clean, well presented and fully functional with a fantastic choice at breakfast if you choose that option. They show a real interest in your activities and offer genuine advice for your trips out

My wife and I visited Zulani for five nights staying in their Honeymoon Suite and had a fabulous time overall. In fact, it's hard to think of anything negative to say as we were both so well looked after. And even though the weather was sometimes against us, we managed to have both an exciting and a restful time in St. Lucia after two weeks of hectic safari and Johannesburg schedules. It's a lovely and tranquil place to explore and the wetlands are spectacular.
The Zulani only has four rooms, plus an attached house that can be rented for larger groups and therefore maintains a sense of uniqueness plus a welcoming familial atmosphere that is never pretentious or stifling. Booked here after reading all the positive comments on tripadvisor and contacting June, the owner, through the hotel website, which was refreshingly easy. While I was initially concerned that there might be a bit too much "supervision" here, with such an on-point hostess, I was very quickly impressed with June's finely honed sense of boundaries and how she perceived and addressed both our needs and those of other guests with different priorities.
Room was quiet, spacious, open-plan, with huge, comfortable bed, sitting area, very welcoming jaccuzi bath-- especially after a day in the rain at the beach!-- champagne bucket on arrival, TV with ample DVD library, few mossies, plenty of storage area-- all for an unbeatable price. All four rooms open out onto a small pool, flowering garden, and a covered, open-air breakfast "nook"... Breakfast was delicious, filling and served at whatever time you organized the day before, which we often changed without problem. Excellent coffee, toast and an amazing fresh-fruit salad were served before your choice of eggs, sausage, baked beans, mushrooms, tomato, bacon, more fruit, cereal, yogurt, fresh juice, another coffee-- holy heaving hippos, we were stuffed every morning and happily so.
Location: Only a block from St. Lucia's quiet main street and yes, believe it or not you can walk five-ten minutes to a series of decent if not spectacular restaurants. At night. In South Africa. Hotel is also a few minutes away from a lush, looping, jungly nature trail down to the estuary where crocs and hippos can be seen along with many, many birds. There are literally dozens of guesthouses in St. Lucia, many of them not registered on-line and some directly on the estuary banks but, after driving and walking around we were 100 percent satisfied with our choice of the Zulani and would definitely stay there again should we visit St. Lucia in the future. According to June, Zulani roughly translates as "travelling forward but not in a straight line" which pretty much describes my wife and I, and many other travellers, perfectly...
As indicated on the Zulani website, June is keen and able to arrange any sort of area-tour and can also offer precision advice regarding sight-seeing in the area for those who prefer to explore on their own... she even had coolers, ice-packs, beach towels, snorkel gear, beach chairs, umbrellas and boogie boards for us to borrow, free of charge, for the days we struck out in the rental car... through June we also arranged a kayak trip on the estuary (a lovely morning jaunt but personally would have appreciated a bit more "dumb-and-dangerous" as opposed to a "safe-and-sane" approach regarding paddling up close to the crocs and hippos-- but, you know, we lived to tell the tale) and a suprisingly informative and productive night drive around the wetlands...
In a nutshell, although the room was clean and cozy and the hotel is in a great location, the main selling point here is June who provides amply without intruding. She's always available for advice, bookings, and conversations over a cheeky glass of white wine but you never feel as though she's looking over your shoulder-- which is a fantastic skill to have in the hospitality industry. On a side note, when our two married gay friends arrived from Johannesburg to join us for three nights at Zulani, requesting a kingsize bed, she made them feel at home without so much as batting an eye. Which is as it should be. Full marks.

The owners have clearly created an excellent environment with guest room rather like a motel facing inwards towards a splendid garden & pool. However, that was probably sometime ago, as in some way’s it’s getting a little tired. The bathroom needs refurbishing (dark marks around in the tiles & shower head replacement), the breakfast (although a small banquet) was over cooked & I didn’t particularly care for the way the lady of the house spoke to her staff. Having said all of that, there’s no reason why this guest house couldn’t be great again! The room was comfy, clean & quiet. The location is as pretty good for the town centre, but in a quiet location.

Staying here is probably a matter of perspective and what you expect in a guest house. On the plus side, the location is very convenient to the Main Street, the hosts are lovely, and the breakfast offering was great (including pancakes for our kids). However, the facilities really need some serious updating and better cleaning (e.g., leaks in various places, geico droppings all over the walls, inconsistent hot water, general cleanliness). Oh and it’s worth noting that you need to call them when you are checking in, because the guest house isn’t staffed consistently during the day.

We particularly wanted to visit the St Lucia area to visit the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park to see giant turtles and lots of hippo's (my favourite animal).
My husband found Zulani Guest House on the internet by chance and we booked 5 nights. On arrival, it felt as if we were staying in a mini-safari lodge! Lovely entrance hall with wooden animal carvings everywhere. We stayed in the Leopard and Rhino rooms which were decorated accordingly.
June our hostess was warm, hospitable and nothing was too much trouble. After 2 weeks of travelling around South Africa, we were getting fed up with take aways and restaurant meals, June offered us full use of a lovely communal kitchen and it was great to have some home cooked meals from fresh, local produce. Beautiful breakfasts and fresh juices were included in our tariff.
The St Lucia Ski boat club is a MUST! Lots and lots of hippo's around just meters away and the club is only 2 minutes from Zulani, a beautiful treat at sunset when the hippo's are out. June arranged all our trips prior to arrival and via email, which were all excellent and included scuba diving, night safari, morning safari and township tour. The township tour was fantastic and very interesting. We felt totally safe and accompanied by a local guide did a walking tour of the township. We visited a local school, shebeen (bar), sangoma (witchdoctor - told my fortune, intersting!) and we also had a traditional meal with a local family.
In terms of restaurants, June recommended the curry at the Ski boat club, which was homemade, lovely and very inexpensive! The local ocean basket chain is also very good and there is a deli in the high street, which supplied us with picnic baskets and light, healthy lunches. I mentioned that I liked June's apron and on our day of departure, she had made me a Zulani apron with the name Zulani embroidered on. I now proudly wear this on the day or two when the sun shines and we are able to have a BBQ in London! A fabulous trip, accommodation and hostess all round! Highly recommend.

We had a wonderful stay at Zulani's: the guest house is perfectly located close to the main street of St Lucia but far enough to avoid the noise of the traffic.
Our room was big, clean and perfectly equipped, and the breakfast was tasty and abundant.
On-site parking proved to be very convenient.
Above all, the owners proved to be very helpful, as the supported us in solving a small problem.
Strongly recommended!

The Guest House is in a lovely setting has secure parking and is within walking distance of all the amenities. Our room was large and well appointed with an open plan bathroom which was not what was promised on booking. We prefer some privacy when performing ablutions. There was some decay of the fittings in the bathroom which large amounts of badly applied white silicone couldn't hide.
Breakfast is taken around a communal table and is adequate. The hosts are very friendly and helpful with local information and bookings.

We stayed here for 3 nights to explore the area, and had booked a standard double room. The atmosphere is very relaxed and we felt very welcome upon arrival. Owners are very helpful with bookings and providing you with beach chairs, cooling bag and whatever you might need during your day out in the area.
Rooms are simple but large and clean. We had an incident with a water leak in the room during our stay, and it was taken care of immedialty and was fixed when we arrived after the days excusions.
Location is perfect, little bit off the main street, but still so close that you can walk to restaurants in the evening. Convenient with free parking inside the gates. Owners are very helpful with bookings and providing you with beach chairs, cooling bag and whatever you might need during your day out in the area.
Breakfast is great! Lots to choose from and very tasty. You sit together with the other guests around a big table which opens for fun discussions and exchange of experiences - somehow everyone opened up and it was a very relaxed and nice amosphere around the table.
We will definitely stay here again, we are not done with this corner of South Afrika.
