The Lodge's name "Ingwenya" derives from the Zulu word for crocodile. It was quite logical to choose a name for our lodge indigenous to Zululand, in this first world heritage site of South Africa. Ingwenya Lodge is situated on the "outskirts" of the residential area of St Lucia, nestled in the heart of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park. The property borders the nature reserve with a view of both the sea and the estuary, a very unique privilege in St Lucia.

Accommodation was great with all necessary amenities. We had a wonderful stay. However, other guests need to be aware of the following and also the reasons why we did not give 5 star:
1) One bedroom (with the bunk beds) does not have windows to outside, it leads to a small internal corridor that is supposed to bring fresh air. This was not mentioned in the description.
2) Internet wifi in the room is very poor with major variance throughout the day. For 2 days we did not have internet at all (not sure what happened)
3) There is no network reception (I am on Vodacom) so you need to travel to town if you need to call.
4) For an area with malaria risk (even if it low), we were surprised that the rooms were not equipped with mosquito repellents. This is a very small investment and should be standard in all accommodations to give guests more comfort. There a a lot of mosquitoes in the area and around the house and even if you open the main door for several seconds, you will get mosquitoes inside.

The general impression:
Toilet brush to be shsred over 2 toilets (cleaning lady brought us one from another Chalet).
Wardrobe cabinets are not smooth, you may damage your Polo shirts on the rough surface.
No comfortable deck Chairs at the outside dining Table
It looks like missing or poor maintenence
Positiv:
Friendly host and cleaning Lady

Upon late arrival at dusk and during load-shedding, the service provider welcomed our family of 6 adults (4 pensioners between 65 and 85 years old, with different health challenges) and 3 dogs spent She assisted with guiding us on restaurant and activity options, especially those that were suitable for our family.
The accommodation is neat and spacious - we stayed in the 3 bedroom unit and used the comfortable sleeping couch as well.
The kitchen was well stocked and stove worked well.
Bathrooms were well ventilated and tiles clean.

The property is well kept, close enough to the center , yet far enough from the town's hustle. the host is very welcoming and extremely accommodating. She is very knowledgeable of her home town and reachable whenever we needed her.

A dreadful experience. Madeleine the host needs to try harder, it was a most stressful experience for our family. On our arrival the town had a power outtage that lasted nearly 2 days. Not her fault BUT No generator on the property and because the water pump is driven by solar - no water for a few hours either. The solar only powers two lights in the unit and so during loadshedding it's a very uncomfortable place, dark for my kids and we all had to have a cold bath in the middle of winter! Shocking and no effort made by the hostess to offer alternatives. Her dog is not kid friendly, we were warned by her, so my kids had to avoid the dog as well. Then the sliding door handle was faulty and we were locked out of our room at 7am. No sign of Madeleine, she went to the beach without her phone. We had to wait outside until she arrived back after 8am. The kitchen appliances and pans were old and rusted and general lack of care in the unit. We stayed at a self catering place down the same road and it was perfect, rather go elsewhere.

We had a great stay at Ingwenya's Lodge with our two dogs. The location is a perfect place to walk all around St. Lucia and also to explore Isimangaliso Park. Our dogs enjoyed the ample sized private patio. The pool area was lovely and everything was well kept, tidy and immaculately clean.

The only downside was that other guests had also brought dogs who barked incessantly and were left outside all night long, which we heard their barking. That’s not Ingwenya’s fault, but the dogs barking was annoying.

If you are looking for pet friendly accommodation, this is perfect and a great quiet spot within walking distance to the main are of St Lucia.

Lovely stay - Madelein was very friendly and welcoming. She had lots of information about the area and contact numbers of service providers. Felt safe during our stay. She has a few dogs of her own, but didn’t bother us. Beautiful view. Shower had good pressure and beds were very comfortable. We could use the braai facilities and some wood was also provided. Kitchen was well stocked for self catering purposes, but tea, coffee, salt, pepper and sugar were not provided. Towels changed every 2nd day, but housekeeping cleaned the unit every day (and washed the dishes :-)). No dishwasher in the unit. Off road parking on site. We had a lovely stay and would recommend it.

I chose to stay here after some of the fantastic reviews on the view. It wasn't until arrival that I that I was on the ground floor and the fantastic views were really on the upper floors. I encourage all to consider asking for an upper floor room if view is important to you or considering staying elsewhere. Room was as described and good insight around tourist things to do provided.

Very neat unit overlooking the forest with a sea view. Host was very friendly and helpful with information about the area as well as what activities are available with supporting maps. The hornbills in the tree make for a good sighting. We will be back for sure.

Our already high expectations were exceeded during our recent stay at Ingwenya Lodge. It’s the perfect place for families to kick back and relax in a peaceful setting that has a large garden with a treehouse, trampoline and pool to keep everyone busy. The units were serviced every day and the attention to detail in the decor of the units are something the owner’s can be proud of. We will definitely be returning soon and recommend it to all.
