We recently stayed at Buhala Lodge again having stayed there 3 years ago with our friends. WE LOVED IT SO MUCH! Marjie (hilarious) at the front desk, Gary (what a photographer!) at the front desk, Sean (safari guide extraordinaire!) who we requested and paid a little extra to have him all to ourselves...he KNOWS the habits of the animals and KNOWS exactly what and where and how to enjoy them and get the best photos because he is a beautiful photographer as well!
Then there is the lodge itself...OMG!!!! Our room with a private veranda overlooks the Crocodile River in Krueger and in the evening we watch the sun go down in all its brilliance and glory-you have never seen a sunset like this! I like to enjoy a serene bath looking at the river and the rich colors of bougainvillea outside the bathroom window. (Room #13) There are lounging/sitting areas all over the lodge, a bar area, pool and wonderful large veranda to view the animals who wander about as you sip a finely crafted cocktail before dining al fresco by candlelight. The atmosphere is gentle, subdued, sophisticated. Linen napkins contorted into animal figures in your water glass lit by the lantern, fine wines (there is a beautiful glass enclosed wine room!) and very, very inexpensive, you just can't believe it! The food is the best ever, we are foodies and know good food...this is exceptional, this is truly 5 star cuisine. You choose what you want even morning from plenty of options. Let's see, what else? Oh we like to play golf and was able to play Leopard Creek, a fine private club, about a 15 minute drive. If you stay at Buhala Lodge you get to play there, otherwise no. All in all, this is the place to stay. We stayed at the Burj Al Arab in Dubai as we flew Emirates from JFK (they call it the only 7 star hotel in the world) and once we got to the lodge we decided that there was NO comparison...Buhala Lodge is simply the most beautiful place to stay and we have traveled everywhere. Make your travel plans...and enjoy!!!

Dear Marie and Edson, wow thank you for this raving review! We all so loved having you and Edson come stay and experience all that our beautiful lodge has to offer! Our river view rooms really are a treat being able to watch our breath-takingly beautiful red/pink sunsets over the Crocodile river and Kruger Park. We know that you so badly wanted to extend your stay but couldn't due to flights, so we hope to welcome you back in the near future! Warm Regards, the Buhala Lodge Team

Buhala Lodge is a gem on the banks of the Southern Crocodile River. We had an amazing stay at the luxury stylish colonial lodge. All the staff was very friendly. All you had to do was relax and have a great time. Our host, was very attentive. I loved the beautiful decor and it fits in perfectly with the type of lodge. We had some lovely ice cold wine, while enjoying viewing the wildlife on the banks of the river. We even witnessed a fight amongst Hippos, and were treated with the most beautiful sunset. Our dinner was perfect. We both had a tender juicy fillet steak, perfectly cooked with a beautiful sauce. Our room was very spacious with interesting decor. We had a private balcony that overlooked the river. The Hippos came out to graze and you could see them so clearly. We were very safe and just enjoyed the special moment. The room had a beautiful bathroom with a large one way glass window where you could enjoy watching the wild life from your bath. The breakfast was an absolute feast. Buhala Lodge is highly recommended and we will definitely be back.

An ideal base from which to explore Kruger National Park (either self-drive or guided game drives offered by the lodge), and the opportunity to play the renowned Leopard Creek Golf Course.
The well equipped and recently refurbished rooms offer a perfectly comfortable stay, and most have expansive views over the Crocodile River and Kruger National Park beyond. The dinner set up on the lawns are not to be missed! We were fortunate enough to spot the Big 5 across the river during our stay.

My partner and I had been to Sabi Sands for a few days and added in a stop-over to Buhala Lodge so that he could play golf at Leopard Creek. The lodge is very simple to get to and when you arrive the first thing that will catch you are the magnificent views. The lodge sits on the banks overlooking the crocodile river which is truly stunning. The lodge itself also has an old world charm through its decor. I have to say however that the full experience was not quite a 5 star experience. The hotel is now dated and needs an upgrade. This is evident in the rooms and bathrooms that seem quite old (and due to that can appear dirty). I spent a lot of time on the patio which is great in the afternoon and some of the furniture there with fabric is very old and dirty. The dinner and breakfast service seemed chaotic and the staff, while really nice, seemed completely overwhelmed by the number of people there and struggled to describe the meals when asked. Although the lady at check in was very nice and not sure if she is the manager, I really did not have an understanding of who is in charge generally as we did not see her again after check in. If the manager was there, they were not visible. Some of the meals were really great and others not so much, so for me personally, the food was hit or miss. I guess it’s something I should have checked, as I was spending a lot of time there-especially while my partner played golf- a mini bar would have been helpful. Our room , which had a balcony (and thus great views) was also not the best, as it was near the restaurant and so the rowdy golf tour types would make a lot of noise. In general, the acoustics of the place are not fantastic as you hear all of the creaking and every little move that your upstairs neighbour makes. While the view is amazing and the big plus here is you get to play at Leopard Creek (and it is a quick drive there), I really would not put it at 5 stars at all. It’s perhaps a 4 star at a stretch. I think the hotel needs updating and the service needs to be of5 star quality. Unfortunately most people are held at ransom to pay the high hotel rate (for the quality you get) in order to play at the incredible leopard creek and so the lodge will always have customers because of that. I was left disappointed.

My wife and I spent the recent long weekend at Buhala Lodge and had an excellent stay. The location overlooking the Crocodile River is exceptional, with regular views of buffalo, hippo, elephant and crocs, not to mention abundant bird life. The lodge is a very short drive to the Malelane Gate to the Kruger Park, and offers total privacy. The rooms are spacious, clean and very comfortable, with amazing views overlooking the river. The highlight of the stay was definitely the food, complimented by exceptional service. The chef, Mavis, prepared beautiful continental breakfasts and amazing dinners. The salmon dinner was the best I have ever eaten in my life! My wife and I would highly recommend Buhala Lodge to anyone looking for a relaxed escape from the city, who enjoys the natural surroundings and exceptional service!

From the moment we started planning our holiday and contacted Buhala Lodge, the staff made us feel very welcome. The accommodation is in large, airy rooms with a veranda, so one can take advantage of the magnificent views. The staff are extremely helpful and always on hand to help out or offer advice. Had a wonderful stay and would happily go back again.

We can highly recommended Buhala Lodge - homely, excellent service and food, a proper wine selection, and the best location for appreciating game and sunsets. It's also easily accessible as it's only one hour from Nelspruit airport and 12 km from Malelane gate. Make sure you book a room that overlooks the crocodile river, so that you can watch the game from your balcony.

This was our second stay at Buhala, and it was just perfect!

The food is impeccable. The choices each day were a combination of a shef that knows flavours, a chance to try venison meat, and South African classics. All in all, the food was the highlight for me.

The location is perfect. With a lovely view of the river, game around the lodge and the Kruger nearby, what more does one need?

The service is exceptional. We experienced cleanliness, beautiful and thoughtful personal touches, specific accommodations according to requests and extremely helpful, friendly staff all around.

Thanks Buhala!

Indeed, a beautiful colonial styled boutique hotel on a huge and well-guarded estate with a nice common veranda and pool overlooking the Crocodile river. We had a spacious and nice room at the back of the hotel but next time we will definitely book a room with a private veranda to enjoy the splendid views at sundown and watching the grunting hippos at the banks of the river. The staff (i.e. Erica and Marjolein) are excellent hosts and the support staff is also very helpful and dedicated. Breakfast, afternoon tea and dinner are also top of the bill and service was excellent and courteous. Besides playing golf at Leopard Creek we also booked a safari trip with Shawn the hotel’s tour guide. A very enthusiastic and dedicated guide who got us very excited when he spotted – notwithstanding the thick foliage - two leopards lying at a distance of 80 meters high-up in the trees. Can highly recommend the hotel, the golf and the guided tour with Shawn.

It being our first visit to the Kruger National Park (as South African residents - blush) ... we could not have wished for a better experience. All the staff were wonderful from Thembisa the grounds man who pointed out the hippo, warthog and crocodile on the river edge on our first day, to Dumisane who efficiently saw to our food and drink requirements. The sublime food prepared by Gertrude the Chef and her team ... to a most relaxing massage also done by Gertrude! The front office ladies were super helpful and attentive ... we had many long and entertaining conversations with Marjie. We did our own drive and saw plenty of animals within the first 30 minutes of our drive, including Lion, wild dogs, giraffe, buffalo, elephants, warthogs, zebra, rhino and plenty of buck. The convenience of being 10-15 minutes to the Kruger Park was an added bonus.
Thank you to all the staff and Mr and Mrs Rhodes for sharing your wonderful space with us.
