Our recent trip to Hippo Hollow Country Estate was one of our Memorable holidays. From arrival to departure we were treated with the utmost friendliness and professionalism from all the staff! My son was treated like a King with every Breakfast and was made sure he was comfortable and relaxed as well, they really went out of their way to make him happy! And then there is not even talking about the most beautiful views and relaxing and tranquil atmosphere with Elephants and Hippos on your doorstep. I would definitely recommend Hippo Hollow for your next trip. If you don't believe me try them for yourself!

The staff were really nice and helpful. The food at the restaurant was very tasteful! We even saw some baby hippo’s at night in the river! The beds are huge, Wich I was really nice. The rooms are also very clean. The whole vibe & scenery of this hotel is lovely and a true African experience.

Its in a great location to visit the Kruger National Park, and first impressions are very good, its in a great setting. However the rooms are a little dated and tired and could do with a make over. The restaurant staff were unfriendly to the point of being rude, as if we were an inconvenience to them. The service was extremely slow, but the food was ok when it eventually arrived

Our two-night stay in this quiet haven, close to Kruger Park was both relaxing and enjoyable. The friendly staff made us a packed breakfast for an early morning game drive. Our well-designed river-view chalet overlooked the nearby game sanctuary and this was a big plus.

We loved the property and two pools at Hippo Hollow. A lso, our garden-facing room was beautifully built with heavy African wood furniture, comfy beds, a big bathroom with double shower, a fridge, hairdryer, good lighting and an airy terrace with a nice table and chairs. There was an electric kettle and rooibos tea. We were able to get up very early and have tea on our terrace and look for animals as it got lighter out. There is a safe and the cabin door locked easily. We arrived around 4pm. We had been advised about 2 nice restaurants nearby and assumed we could take a taxi or Uber. When we asked about walking over and Ubering back, the Intake person looked totally alarmed and said, "No! No, you can't do that! It's not safe." We were stunned by the reaction. He then said there are no Ubers or taxis in Hazyview. The only option would be him trying to find someone to drive us over, wait while we had dinner, then drive us back. We estimated it would be about $40-50 USd and not worth it. The only option was their buffet. It was ok but not fabulous. Breakfast buffet was the same. We had 2 breakfasts and the one dinner. We also had load shedding for 2 1/2 hours from 9pm-11:30pm. That was fine with us as we went to sleep and had a long good night in their comfy beds. A highlight was seeing elephants being exercised as they "walked to work" at Elephant Whispers nearby across the Sabie River. There was a clear view of the river from the beautiful open air restaurant. We saw this two days in a row! Hippo Hollow is beautifully decorated and landscaped and is quiet and civilized. We really appreciated that. But, you need your own transport or you are a prisoner there.

We noticed as we were arriving at Hippo Hollow that the property was gated and surrounded by an electric fence. We instantly loved the property with its beautiful flowers, trees, and river. Gorgeous weather added to the good feeling of being there. After an efficient check-in, we entered our spacious room with a very large bed. We walked outside to a balcony overlooking a swimming pool. We had a scheduled blackout for two hours and we were advised when it would happen. It’s important to know that this is not the fault of the hotel. This is controlled by the electric company, and it’s a regular event in South Africa. The blackout was only in our room. The lobby and dining room had an emergency generator. Meals were fine at the hotel. The hotel isn’t far from a large shopping mall where you can find McDonald’s, grocery stores, and clothing items. It’s not touristy, so guests can’t expect touristy items there.

We stayed here for 4 nights between a private game drive and flying to Zimbabwe. The hotel is in a nice setting but as others have said, there’s nothing to do and the restaurant / food isn’t great. 3 minutes up the road are some restaurants / shops and 10 minutes up the road is a large mall, but we were told it wasn’t safe to walk there and quoted between RS1500-3000 / £50-£80 for a taxi / transfer for 3-10 minutes drive! There is no cheap taxi company so to get to any excursion activity doubled the price and made it too expensive. We did do one excursion which was white water rafting and quad biking, that was great but cost double for the transfer. The hotel prices for excursions were triple the price of the local company and tourist office, so we booked everything with the local company up the road instead. There is no shop on site for snacks or drinks and the hotel will not do room service or let you take pizzas from the restaurant to your room. We weren’t sure why? We ended up taking the risk and walking to the local shops and mall and buying snacks for our kids during the stay. When we arrived at the hotel we immediately upgraded to a river lodge so we had a view of the elephants and river and that was very nice, but the hotel tried to charge us a ridiculous price to do this for 4 nights, luckily a lovely member of staff managed to reduce this for us. The hippo’s grazed below our balcony each night and we saw a family of otters too. For the whole stay there was a screeching device in the top of our lodge roof which meant we didn’t sleep well. Apparently it was a bat deterrent. We reported it to reception who didn’t do anything and this made the stay quite unrestful. If you do stay here, stay in a river lodge and have your own transport, otherwise give it a miss.

Good day, Thank you for your review. We have taken notes of all the points made and the relevant department managers is looking into them. The hotel does not have adventure activities onsite, so we make use of 3rd party service providers for activities. We quote guests the rates as given to us by them and these are the same companies we use for transfers. Unfortunately Hazyview, being a rural town, does not offer services like Uber. We do have a curio shop onsite that sells snacks like chips and sweets and a variety of drinks can be purchased from the bar. Although you mentioned that the food was not great, you did not elaborate more. We offer an extensive buffet most nights. We do understand that the restaurant might have been a bit underwhelming during your stay, since parts were blocked due to renovations taking place.

We stayed here for two nights in the river villas. It was raining and thundering the most of time. The roof of the other Villa leaked and there were long electricity breaks. The restaurant offered only a buffet and it was not of good quality in our opinion. There was nothing to do or even hotel lounges to sit in. However, the area was beautiful, the river villas were nice and the personnel were mostly friendly. We did not see any hippos or crocodiles and after being on safaris, we do not think that the possibility to see them here is big.

Good day, Hope you are well and thank you for your review. We are happy that you enjoyed our property and that the staff made you feel welcome. It is sad that you did not manage to see the hippos, but they are mostly nocturnal animals and come out at nnighttime to feed. We hope that you managed to see the elephants though during your stay. Unfortunately, we are unable to control the weather and it is unfortunate that you had to experience bad weather during your stay. At times we do have power outages during thunderstorms. From your review, it is unclear whether the leaking roof was reported to the hotel reception, but we would have gladly moved you to a different room or had maintenance take a look at your roof if it was. The hotel does have a lounge area at the top of the stairs at the main building as well as inside the main restaurant area (although these have been slightly reduced due to current renovations taking place) and also at the bar area. With regards to the restaurant, we apologise for the lack of quality/variety you experienced. Since you stayed over a busy period, the chef decided to serve buffet meals. This was to prevent from guests waiting long periods for their food if the restaurant was busy. We do have another restaurant about 700m from the hotel in the complex across the road and I am unsure why this was not offered to you as an alternative option. We do however hope that you enjoyed your time with us and wish you all the best for 2024

What a fabulous hotel. The views from the restaurant overlooking the river so relaxing. Hotel nicely laid out and the grounds well looked after. Mainly offered a buffet type meal for our three nights at the hotel. Large selection and good quality food but what really made the visit were all the staff who were friendly, well informed and couldn’t do enough for you a a customer. I would highly recommend a visit. Lunch was always very good too and a visit across the river from the local elephants was a bonus. Room we had was huge.
