Detailed Reviews
The Resort is built around a golf course and has about 100 timeshare chalets and an international hotel. It is a five star resort and is immaculately maintained. This visit was when the international travel was still banned due to Covid-19 and the local timeshare owners were the vast majority of the guests at the resort.
Each chalet faces on to the golf course and you watch golfers playing from your balcony. There is also a large hippo pool with a hide that allows you to watch the hippos, crocodiles and birds as the world slowly passes you by.
The 6 bed chalets have two bedrooms downstairs and one upstairs. One bathroom is ensuite for the main bedroom and the other serves the other bedrooms and the guests. The second bathroom has a huge walkin shower that is so big that it doesn't even need a door to stop scattered water. Large kitchen with dish washer despite the units being fully serviced. Large braai outside.
We love this resort and this was our fourth year coming back.
The resort kitchen has introduced take aways of pizzas and burgers that you can order to eat at your chalet. They also offer breakfasts and dinners for sit down guests. There is also a well stocked privately run shop on site for the essentials.
There are six swimming pools around the resort, a seperate pool for each cluster of chalets and the hotel.
The Phabeni gate to the Kruger Park is only 14 km away and has plenty of day passes, meaning the resort is a great place to stay when wanting to visit the KNP. The town of Hazyview is only 2 km down the road selling everything from fast food, groceries, and even building supplies.
The resort is about 400km from Johannesburg and takes about 6 hours by car to get from Johannesburg.
Cell phone coverage and internet connectivityt is very good.
The staff were very helpful and cheerful.

We have been staying at Sabi River Sun once a year for a few years now, and it is always a pleasure. The grounds are beautifully kept, notwithstanding that the golf course is currently undergoing a major refurb. The staff are pleasant and attentive, our chalet at Hippo Hollow is a treat, listening to hippo grunts while relaxing on the patio is pretty special. It is well worth spending some time watching the hippo lake closely, as there is a thriving ecosystem at work. The location is excellent, with short & scenic drives up to surrounding towns, as well as very good access to three of the gates at Kruger Park. Highly recommended.

The service on arrival was excellent. all safety protocols were followed and all check -in procedures went well. the staff were friendly and helpful. the hotel rooms where clean and comfortable, the amenities were okay. The hotels grounds were beautiful. the pool area was really nice. the kids enjoy the pool. it was great to walk around and see the different lakes. The lunch menu was great and the service was good. We did however pick up a problem with dinner reservation. we could not get a booking at first and then when we finally did, the staff gave our table away. The service was extremely bad that night and we ended up having dinner in our room at 10pm which was ridiculous. Really spolit our evening. The resort on a whole was good.

Certainly a beautifully set place with tons of entertainment on the resort. An ideal place for a family with tons of pools and many activities. Its awesome getting to watch the hippos and the close proximity to the phabeni gate. The staff are friendly and accommodating, i travelled with a boisterous 9 month old, the restaurant were so accommodating with sterilizing of bottles etc.
I do feel there is room for an upgrade in the hotel rooms and the bathrooms can be redone but this is a tiny factor and partly my fault as i could have booked at a chalet. the rooms are immaculately clean, the bedding is soft and fresh and the air conditioner works more than efficiently.
Close to malls for food if you want to not eat in.
The poolside is fabulous and are all the staff. Support local and go on holiday to sabi even if you do not wish to go out anywhere.

Not the most pleasant place to stay. We had a loft chalet, and the heat in the loft area was absolutely unbearable. There are two fans in the loft space (one which was broken), but it created more noise than cool air. Sleeping there was practically impossible. Also be warned that the chalets have thatched roofs, which means lots of bugs! The amount of critters that we had to swat away…
Also, the cleaning service was not up to par — basically it was just surface level cleaning, nothing beyond a wipe down. We asked them to clean spider webs multiple times and got ignored (we got our own cleaning supplies in the end). Wet dishes were packed in the cupboards and smelled funny… I expected much more, cleanliness during C-19 times is non-negotiable.
Also be warned the whole resort is a golf course, so you can’t go for a walk without having to look out for flying balls. Extremely inconvenient when you have small kids to look out for.
The hippo pool was cool though.

If you want to go stay in a shabeen stay at home and go local. Do not waste your money staying here.
Thursday night was bliss good service good food and all was well.
Then friday arrived and the shabeen opened all night parties in the hotel corridor, doors slamming all night and drunks screaming and shouting until 3 in the morning. The morning we woke to a corridor full of broken glass.
Saturday here we go again as we went to our rooms the corridors were full of drinking residents and yep we carried on til 3 again… shouting screaming banging doors and falling around drunks.
Luckily my daughter who was competing in a golf tournament could sleep at a friends in the bungalows for the night.
The bungalows were not much better we could hear the music and screaming from some of them on the 14th hole to the 18th !!!!!
This was common consensus from all the players unfortunate to book here !!
If you want a restful weekend in the bush go elsewhere, the clever people amongst us did.
Its a pity as the staff are excellent and the breakfast is outstanding….

i would like to place on record the exceptional service we received during our week long stay at Sabie River Sun Resort Hotel. All staff starting from the Front desk Manager, Hlengiwe.Mkhize to the chefs, waiters, waitresses(Prudence & Julia-to name a few) and to the housekeeping ladies - were all very kind, accommodating and helpful. We felt very welcome and at home. A very big thank you to Chef Lucky, Chef Musa, Chef Prince, Chef Goodman and Chef Polite for taking care of all our Halaal catering needs. We really appreciate your efforts in going the extra mile to ensure we had halaal suitable meals prepared every day. Thank you for your excellent hospitality and we look forward to booking with you again in the near future.

The place is a large resort with golf, tennis, etc and various apartments. My review applies only to the hotel.
The resort obviously caters to wealthy visitors to the Kruger Park. I found the hotel replete with a beautifully manicured golf course and very high-end cabins as well as the hotel itself to be disappointing. It is probably the only one available for tours, and it is professionally run, and is satisfactory for lodging. But we had been staying at hotels characterized by happy, always smiling and very helpful staffs, but in the two days I never saw single staff person smile, nor for that matter, the wealthy guests. Many seemed dour and unhappy. The staff almost seemed proud of the fact that they have no ATM machine (the town is too far to walk for one). I suspect that this is a management issue. Our rooms were adequate but nothing memorable. Our group of 9 was unanimous in our disappointment, and everybody commented that the food here was by far the worst of the trip, overcooked and tasteless.

We stayed in unit 71 (self-catering 3 bedroom. [Only me and wife]
Reception was friendly, fast and efficient
[Funny that an old school normal key is still provided compared to other resorts which uses electronic door cards for security]
It is great well-kept resort with obvious attention maintaining the golf course as priority. Well achieved!
With Hazyview so close by, the little shop has very little very little on offer but basics like ice, wood etc. are available at reasonable prices.
Restaurant is wow with good food at good prices.
Beds, pillows, duvets -very comfortable
T off nr 12 was in front of our unit, meaning less privacy but it was funny watching some golfers behavior and cursing as they mostly ended in the water hazard 😊
Can highly recommend this resort. Close to Kruger (10km to Phabeni gate) and about 2 km from shopping malls.
You really can go there with no groceries and buy all your stuff at Checkers or Pick a Pay or Spar….
The negative we experienced:
The chalet was VERY well equipped, even a dish-washer.
BUT, There seems to be no monitoring and evaluation of chalets inside. The cleaners just come and go with no after inspection/evaluation of equipment.
Grater was so blunt it could not even grate cheese. We requested a replacement (uhm used one too coming from another unit in minutes)
Stove plates are rusted, no proper scrubbing ever.
Oven rubbers hanging loose, requested repair but still the same when we left, oven not usable in this condition since all heat escapes
No dishwashing liquid provided, we had to buy
No dishwashing tabs/powder provided, had to buy
Cheap R1 Disposable wipe provided as washing cloth, had to buy a decent one
No dishwashing sponge provided, had to buy
Remote control had no battery cover, awkward
Refrigerator door full of dents, why, does not belong in high rating resort
No hair dryers provided in any room, huge disappointment to wife
WiFi was constantly unreliable, on and off during stay, constantly requesting login again on devices when coming online
Outside braai has a fixed coal stove/chimney like grid at bottom, meaning huge/fast ventilation, fire at first way too hot for BBQ ,, and then coals just do last long for a relaxed BBQ, since colas just burn way too fast into ashes falling to bottom ash collection tray.
A flat area on bottom of braai with no such huge ventilation vents is much better for a relaxed BBQ
Would like undercover parking, car standing in full sun at this unit all week.
Still it was a great week and resort, with some management intervention and proper inspection tools it can improve and alleviate such things stated above.

I am not a Travel Agent - merely a private traveller.
Having flown into Johannesburg Airport, we hire a car. I would have thought it is much to great a distance to take a 'shuttle' - (mini-bus? or taxi?) unless you intend flying from Johannesburg to Kruger International Airport, which is not far (it can take an hour or so) from Hazyview, where Sabie River Sun is located.
It takes a day's drive, with stops for Coffee at a Motorway - N.4 Service Station, Lunch at Dullstroom and an afternoon cup of tea at Sabie, which is then about 45 minutes drive to Hazyview.
Last month - May 2019 - we arrived at Johannesburg Airport at 7am - left the Airport at 9am (it takes time to collect luggage, have a quick coffee and get to the hire car) and we reached Sabie River Resort at 4.55pm. The route we took was through the hills above Dullstroom, over Long Tom Pass and down into Sabie. A very pleasant drive, with lovely scenery.
It might be a little quicker by keeping on the N.4, all the way to Nelspruit and then driving north to Hazyview, but make sure you follow the R.538 through White River. The other way is tortuous, going through several villages - a multitude of 'speed bumps' - and lots of deep potholes!
The main road passes through nice scenery and although it is a longer distance, you will get there quicker!
My wife and I have been driving to Hazyview since 1996 and we think the Dullstroom route is by far the best.
Enjoy.
However, if you do fly to Kruger International, beware that the R.538 to Hazyview divides. Be sure to take the left hand 'turn' and go through White River - if you take the right-hand, you will hit all the problems mentioned above! It looks a shorter route on the map, but I will never use that road again if I can possible avoid it.
Hope this helps you.
