We stumbled upon Mbala after being let down at 16:00 on Friday, Valentines Day Weekend by another lodge who had double booked our suite.

After a quick Google search, we called up Michelle who was so welcoming and helpful with our plight. “Pull in!” She said on the phone and we promptly set off on the 160km drive from the other lodge where we had been left stranded.

Clear and concise directions with photo’s of land marks via Whatsapp (there are no street signs out in the bushveld) led us to the gates of this wonderful lodge.

In the drive in we saw baby Giraffe and a massive Kudu male, the size of which I haven’t seen in this area for years.

On arrival at the lodge itself the first impression you get is one of warmth, the welcoming aura of this place is tangible.

We were greeted at the Lodge by Mark, the owner, who showed us to our suite which on any day would be amazing, but after our experience was just phenomenal.

All of the furnishings and decor are reclaimed and repurposed by Mark himself and the result is nothing short of spectacular. From beaten copper doors to hand made soaps and fireplaces in the bedrooms, the attention to detail is incredible.

Despite having been given just 2 hours notice on a Friday evening, dinner was amazing and the service by Mark and Michelle, who handle everything themselves, top notch.

The next morning revealed an incredible breakfast, with some of the lodge’s delicious home brewed Kombucha after which we spend the day lazing on the pool deck.
It seemed like we had the farm to ourselves, yet every need we had was catered to immediately.

Mark and Michelle have a passion for their land and the eco system which is evident the minute they talk to you. This is reflected in the quality of the accommodation and the farm in general. Fences and roads are well
Maintained and the animals are in magnificent condition.

Their indigenous nursery yields all sorts of delights such as fresh fruit and vegetables for the table as well as medicinal plants, Mark cured my chronic sinus complaints in 15 minutes with a few leaves from the Artemisa bush he had growing (and subsequently sent home with me in a pot!)

All in all we had the most amazing time at this absolute gem of a lodge with two phenomenal people who accommodated us. We can’t thank them enough for turning a disaster of a weekend into one that we’ll remember forever.

We’ll be back!

A fantastic experience all round. The lodge is spectacular and our hosts, Mark & Michelle, went out of their way to ensure that our every need was taken care of. Saw tons of wildlife on our twice daily game drives which was fantastic. I would highly recommend Mbala for a romantic getaway/honeymoon or even just for a weekend chill.

I had the chance to experience Mbala over the december holidays. Mark and Michelle made a special effort to squeeze me in on short notice and im so glad they did. The game drives were informative and relaxing. We even got a chance to do a short hike up to one of their beautiful rocky outcrops.

The food and rooms were flawless. I will definitely be there again soon.
