I booked the 7 day horseback Tuli safari, and it was an amazing experience.
The team of Horizon is very professional and knowledgeable.
Their horses are well trained, in good shape and good looking and such a pleasure to ride. The rides were amazing with so much wild life every single ride and the guides made me feel safe and they have so much knowledge they share on what you see on the safari.
we camped at 3 different sites and the camp crew moved with us, setting up camp and cook the best meals every single day.
this was my first safari, and will not be my last, and this trip exceeded my expectations by far :-)
thank you to the Horizon team for taking care of me, and giving me this beautiful memory which will last forever

During all those years traveling back and forth to Africa I always dreamed about to join a Horseback Safari. Horizon Horseback has met all my expectations and went even beyond all my wishes. Vegan Meals - as a special Request were cooked and backed in huge portions. Horses are all treated especially well and it is still unbelievable for me how Horizon manages to match Horse and Rider simply using your own provided record about riding skills and experience. I had such a wonderful time. I will be back for sure.

Having spent 3 months volunteering at this incredible lodge, I could not recommend it more to anyone looking for a first class horseback safari experience. Shane, Laura, Kirsty and the whole Horizon team are some of the kindest and most genuine people you will ever meet! Nothing is ever too much trouble and they will do whatever necessary to make your trip the best it could be! Working alongside a predominantly local team of staff was so enjoyable and it is clear what hugely positive impact the lodge has on the Vaalwater area.
I honestly couldn’t rate Horizon highly enough and guarantee you will leave planning when you can return!

Horizon Horseback exceeded all expectations. Everyone was superb - knowledgeable and attentive guides, great chefs who catered to every guest's dietary needs and preferences, wonderfully attentive and knowledgeable staff. The horses were uniformly fabulous. Camps were beautiful and wildlife sightings abundant. Horizon Horseback consistently exceeded all our expectations.

My wife and I love to ride but neither of us had ridden twice a day every day, nor had we been able to ride at a canter for long periods in England. The first day was an eye opener but we were given horses that the guides thought we could handle and they were right. We both progressed during our stay and at the end I was able to ride a beautiful thoroughbred called Copper who was pretty damn quick!
After five days of riding for two or more hours in the morning and afternoon our riding had really improved and we were much better in the saddle. When I got home the comments I got from the instructors at the stable I use were highly complimentary and both of us are now jumping.
The staff here are amazing. They’re so friendly and highly skilled at their jobs. The food is great, freshly cooked at every meal and you won’t go hungry as the portions are as big as you’d like. Mind you, you’ll work up an appetite with all the riding.
The accommodation is fine but don’t be surprised if the lights go out, this is South Africa and power outages are commonplace everywhere. A lovely touch is the laundry service, it’s first class and I can’t say thank you enough to the cleaning staff who kept our lakeside chalet spotless for our stay.
We’ll definitely be coming back here and I don’t normally go back to the same place twice.

Visiting Africa was a dream of mine for most of my life, and the African Explorer horseback safari surpassed all my hopes!
Well organized, professional staff, excellent hospitality, wonderful, thoughtful service, delicious food, and fresh, beautiful accomodations. I enjoyed the variety- splashing canter, swimming with our horses, staying in the gorgeous treehouse, and more.
The guides were phenominal- I always felt safe, they were very responsive to requests, they shared deep knowledge of the terrain, wildlife, plants and trees, and were always kind and gracious. Rides were paced perfectly, tack was excellent and comfortable, and the horses were a dream to ride. Highly Recommended!

My third trip here. A little piece of paradise. Experience the realities of South Africa and its wildlife. Their mission is to give every guest the best possible experience and they construct each day according to their guests wishes. Horses are truly cared about, and superbly good at their job,and suit all abilities. Our party included a non rider, who also had a great time.

A tree swing sways in the breeze, one of several sweet dogs greets you and engages you to play, bird sounds fill the air, and horses graze happily across the dam, where water lilies glisten in the sun. Horizon is a magical place that feels like home.

Each person you meet has a welcoming smile, and they are so kind. The food is AMAZING (I’m gluten free and they did a fantastic job!) , and the beds are so comfy.

The horses are beautiful, well
taken care of, and very loved! Every horse I rode was delightful and different. They were all kind and forward and know their job well. Each guide was fun and knowledgeable! The sundowners were amazing - nothing compares to an African sunset. I met brilliant people that made my dream trip even more special than I could have imagined.

The wildlife!!! Every day was an amazing and unique experience, but the days we rode with giraffe were my favorite. It was a surreal experience I will never forget.

One of my other favorite days was when we rode to the primary school to deliver candy and gifts. They sang us a few songs and it was a delightful experience to see their smiles.

I was so sad to leave, but I will definitely be back. One of the best experiences of my life! I loved the saddles so much I even took one home! So comfortable!

Enjoyed my stay with Horizon Horseback so much, such an excellent experience. Lovely horses, well cared for, responsive and fun to ride. Kind, helpful and knowledgeable staff and volunteers. Beautiful surroundings. Delicious food, even for us vegetarians(!). Variety of wildlife and experiences to enjoy. Suitable for all levels of riders, met so many guests who were on repeat visits.

Travel tips - Visit the local school if possible, and take useful items for the children and staff. Go swimming with the horses!

This was one of the most incredible experiences of my life - and I've been all over the world. It took my daughter for a mother-daughter trip before she goes to college and spent 8 nights at Horizon Horseback. 8 glorious days of horseback riding adventures, delicious food, and memories we'll never forget.
My daughter is an expert level rider and I am beginner/novice after a year of lessons. I hadn't cantered before going on this trip, but through the kindness and patience of the amazing guides and volunteers and the sweetest horses (thank you Smokescreen and Socks!) I was cantering confidently by the end of our trip. We didn't do all our rides together, but we still had plenty of time together and we both had an amazing vacation that catered to our riding levels.
I did a side trip to Camp Davidson and it was absolutely worth it 100%! It was so incredibly peaceful and such a beautiful 'glamping' set up and even away from the lodge, the food was incredibly delicious!
We were in the Hippo lodge, which was absolutely beautiful with the most gorgeous view of the lake where I watched the sun rise to the right and set to the left every day.
I cannot recommend Horizon Horseback enough!!
