Me and my partner stayed at Wildthingz for a few days because we were looking for nothing but an absolute quiet time during the December mayhem and to say Wildthingz delivered on that would be an understatement. The place really delivers on privacy and quietness. The only thing I could recommend be looked at in the facility is the flooring of the showers and maybe a little pool.

Been staying at Wildthingz on a monthly basis for work purposes. Staff are super friendly and helpful, just love the whole team. Wildthingz has become my home away from home when working in Limpopo. The rooms are cosy, and the veranda’s all looking out on the beautiful bush and game roaming around. Most gorgeous bushveld sunsets i have ever seen to be experienced.

Great place to stay, always neat and tidy. Staff are more than willing to assist if you need anything.
There is no loadshedding as they have a generator. Braai area looks into the bush and can see game grazing in the veld

Great chalet for a peaceful and quite weekend away with lovely patio and braai overlooking the bush. Chalet has a well equipped kitchen and was serviced daily. Suggestion is add a file on activities to do in the conservancy.

Very comfortable. Nice to hear all the animal noises through the night.
Excellent breakfast down at the Hotel.
A really pleasant horsey weekend.
And the Ranch is a comfortable two and a half hour drive from Kyalami and virtually motorway door to door.

This review is only for the Lion Walk at Wildthingz- we didn’t stay at the Lodge.

I had seen the Lion Walk mentioned in other reviews of the Polokwane Ranch Resort (see my full review of the property on their page) and was instantly interested. I had a hard time finding the name of the vendor, or their website, and when I finally did, I couldn’t reach anyone there despite completing an inquiry through their site. I was a little disappointed but the Ranch confirmed my reservation so I figured it was OK.

Wildthingz picked us up at the Ranch at 6:50 for the 7:00 walk (I asked why so early and it’s because the lions “get lazy later in the day and won’t walk”). Darlington was our tour guide for the morning and shepherded us through the experience beautifully. We started with a quick lecture: don’t bend down when walking with the lions, no running, don’t touch the head/neck (“biting parts”), only the back and tail (contrary to house cats!), and watch what you’re doing with your walking stick. Please note that your tour guide will take your cameras/cell phones and use them to take pictures for you. They’ll also take pictures with their camera which they said they’d post but a month later, I still haven’t received (taking off one star for this).

The walk was probably about 45 minutes; we went out with two female lions, four tour participants, Darlington and three other “lion tamers”/tour guides. About 2 minutes into the walk, the lions got very quiet and walked into the bush; the tamers tried to get them to keep going but they showed no interest. In typical cat-fashion, they got low to the ground in “pounce position” and then escaped deeper into the bush. Very quickly, we heard a pig squealing and three of the lion tamers were running after them. They were all gone for about 10 minutes while Darlington stood there with us explaining that the lions had likely attacked a “bush pig” (same thing as a warthog, I believe) and trying to keep us calm. I think that we were in more danger than he let on but he kept us calm and I wasn’t nervous at the time. When the lions finally emerged from the bush, they were covered in blood but looking very pleased with themselves (the lion tamers looked less pleased and very sweaty). I’m pretty curious about what went on. We then continued our walk.

During this time, we were encouraged to hold the lions’ tails to walk with them while sporadically stopping to pose for pictures. The lions are very lazy beings; they’d stop every few feet to lay down and rest (I guess I’d be tired after killing a bush pig, too) and the lion tamers would coax them along with a bag full of raw meat. At one point, we stopped and the “meat man” put a piece of meat on a long stick and encouraged Gina, the lion, to jump into a tree to get it. She can climb!

At the end of the walk, we were given time in the cub playpen where we were able to snuggle two lion cubs (kind of shy) and a cheetah cub (very playful, just wanted to lick us to death). This was the highlight of the experience. Kerry, the manager, came out to introduce herself and tell us how rare the “bush pig event” was; she seemed frazzled by it which does lead me to believe it doesn’t happen often. She then had us go on the Big Cheetah experience where we got interact with one of the older females and then see how fast a grown cheetah can run. We were returned to the Ranch about two hours after we were picked up. All in all, a fun experience. The lions seem to be treated very well and the lion tamers were knowledgeable and enjoyable hosts. I’d recommend this to anyone staying the night nearby.

We received the warmest welcome from the manager, Savana, and overall we had a wonderful stay at the Lodge. The chalets are lovely and clean, with beautiful views of the bush from the back patio balconies.

We were greeted by the young giraffe crew and had a moment with them, even though we were more amazed by their beauty than they with us. The accommodation is quite refreshing for the location it is in. Milly is a wonderful hostess.

If you want a serene breakaway to the bushveld this is the place to go. Really liked the sundeck where you can relax and watch the sun come up or go down. Excellent value for money. Would definitely recommend Wildthinz and would definitely return for a visit
