We rarely give 5 star reviews, perhaps a handful at most, but this is one we simply have to give top rating to. We've stayed in both the cabins and Hope Lodge and love both. The staff are amazing and the food rivals anything we've tasted anywhere. The chef, Conrad, would easily get a top job back in our home town London. Instead he loves it here in the bush. The value for money is extraordinary. The animals come right up to the lodges at night and the game drive is a must. If you can go for a bush brie then do it.

We "slipped" away on a surprise visit to Shikwaru for Mothersday. We were booked in at Watoto. We were overwhelmed by the staffs friendliness and their open heartedness towards the visitors. Everything was out of this world. We were treated as if we were VIP's. Adeleen, Jabulani, and chef- Marilyn- God bless you guys for making our stay so special. We will definitely visit again.

+1
Shikwaru is a special place, run by really friendly staff. There are a range of places to stay, which for us included one of the main lodges and some of the beautiful thatched tented units out on the perimeter. The walk in from there was fabulous and included sharing parts of it with wildebeest and zebra, among other wildlife. The food was fabulous and nothing was too much trouble. It was a true African experience with all kinds of wildlife just wandering contentedly around the reserve. We loved that the ostriches would wander past the door, although we had to encourage the monkeys to stay on the right side of it! Hope to return again some day...

A great place to visit while in South Africa and also breath taking since you are surrounding with amazing animals. This place offers you a country feeling yet it has everything to make your stay amazing and memorable. The food is amazing, the Internet access awesome, the view both in the morning and when the sun sets is just out of this world. You should plan to visit this place if you are thinking of a getting away and yet still work at the same time.
Cheers!

Severely overpriced for what we got. A tiny little room in Rafiki (which I was told was the best option) - I have stayed in 4 star for better prices. Electricity went out half the day. No one was at reception when we wanted to buy fire wood to cook food so we made a fire with paper and left over wood. They charged us R100 just to drive us 4km down the road to the fishing grounds as nobody informed me that you cannot reach it without a 4x4. Receptionist was friendly, so was game driver. But unfortunately this was very disappointing. Will not be returning anytime soon.

We stayed in all four Amani units. The camp is nearly 15 years old and it is beginning to show. With some maintenance, it could be wonderful.
Plus points: Communal kitchen, dining area and boma are lovely for large groups to spend some quality time together. Unit 2 was best with all furnishings, etc. functioning properly.
Negatives: pool needs maintenance, unit 1: bed base needs replacement, geyser was leaking, toilet leaked; unit 3: mattress needs replacement, no hot water, toilet leaked all the way into the room; unit 4: stoep light didn't work. Most of our Saturday was spent without electricity (I guess that is to be expected in SA at times). Roads are in poor condition.

All staff were very friendly and helpful. The camp was really secluded, right in the bush. No cell phone reception or TV which made you feel away from it all, great. On the downside, unit 1 some of the external tenting needed replacing, zips did not work as the material had perished. In the wind these panels flapped uncontrollably. Accommodation was comfortable not quite luxury. Disappointed also in the amount of wild life not many animals or birds. Overall average holiday location.
