We really enjoyed our time at Mdluli Safari Lodge and were pleased that we had rebooked to go recently when we couldn't go in December 2020. Starting with the Lodge itself, it's spacious, open and bright and the tented accommodation is not only beautiful but they've made it very practical too. Location wise, it is located in the Kruger National Park near the Numbi gate (south west) but between the first gate and the pay-point gate (Numbi) but in short, animals travel freely between the pay-point and the main gate, meaning that although it's about 15 mins to the Numbi gate down a well-traveled dirt road, it is technically in the national park. It is however, for guest safety, surrounded by electric fencing and body heat/sensor cameras but point in case is that on our first self-drive outside of the Lodge Gate, within the first 4 mins at the most unexpected time (10am) we saw a leopard stalking off into the bush, and an elephant on return from our drive that same day. The following day, a massive herd of buffalos, all within a stone's throw of the Lodge gate. The food is nice and relatively healthy - I wouldn't say it's fancy but nor is it basic. It alternates between buffet, and al a carte and I'm told there's a buma evening as well (unfortunately we arrived just after and left just before one!) The staff are amenable, helpful and warm and while not all the facilities are completed (i.e. gym), the staff do their best to accommodate and make you feel at home. The pool is lovely and the boutique has some stunning products! While we were there, we undertook one self-drive, and two Mdluli organised game drives - early morning and sunset - both were carried out by an experienced guide (Dan) and all the logistics and snacks/breakfast/indemnities/blankets were sorted out by Mdluli reception which made the experience enjoyable and seamless. We also didn't have to book hugely in advance (the night before will do), and we had some other guests with us, all of whom were lovely! Staying at Mdluli was lovely and very enjoyable, and we look forward to going back on our next visit!

The lodge really is beautiful, new and well maintained. The tents are very spacious and well decorated. However, the description of the property is incorrect, they way it is advertised implies that it’s IN the Kruger Park (e.g you will have direct access to the park). But in reality, if you want to go into the park you have to drive about 20min back to Numbi gate and then go through the Kruger Park entry process. This is very inconvenient if you like self drives and quick game viewing trips at sunrise and sunset. Unfortunately we also had a disappointing check in experience (In short: we were told to wait because none of the rooms were ready, a large tour group then arrived right after us and they were allowed to check in immediately. We then had to wait for about 12 people and their luggage to be taken to their rooms before we could be taken to ours. This made me feel like they prioritise tour groups over local visitors). Although the food was good, it was nothing special. Apart from our check-in, the rest of the staff were incredibly friendly and went out of their way to make guests feel welcome.

Response from Christelle Schalkwyk, Marketing at Mdluli Safari Lodge

Dear Visitor, Thank you very much for your review! We agree we are fortunate to have such a beautiful lodge, facilities and location inside the Kruger National Park. We agree with you to go through the Numbi Tourist control point is not convenient for self-drive guests – we pre-permit for guests over busy weekends and permits for open vehicle game drives is also pre-issued – we are working hard with Sanparks to address the issue of permitting at the lodge and alternative routes of access to the Park. Soon guests conservation fee permits will be paid at the lodge and guests will be able to access the Park directly without having to procure the permits from Numbi. Permits will however always be checked at one of the Sanparks tourism control points or when guests exit the Park. We are very sorry about the experience at check-in we can assure you we do not prioritize one guest over the other – it was only because your room was apparently not ready yet. We have put measures in place to ensure that this experience is not repeated. We value your comments regarding our food we will work harder to ensure that it is consistently excellent. Thanks for the feedback about our incredibly friendly staff – they are proud to work in their communities’ own lodge and we are very proud of them! Best wishes from the wonderful Kruger National Park!
