Plains Camp is situated in the heart of a private 12 000 hectare wilderness concession 10km north east of Skukuza Rest Camp in the world famous Kruger National Park. The concession is an environmentally sensitive area which was previously unexplored, with huge diversity of both fauna & flora - an ideal setting for wilderness walking safaris in an internationally renowned big five area.It comprises of 4 en-suite luxury African explorer style tents with all the comforts of home with the African Wilderness on your doorstep. Built in authentic pioneer tradition, it has the serenity of a 19th century naturalist's rest, nestled in an Acacia Knobthorn thicket.Expansive decks surround the lounge and dining areas from where one can survey the vast Timbertene Plains and watch the big 5. The plunge pool is an ideal place to retreat during the heat of the day while the animals drink at the nearby waterhole.Guests can choose to walk to "Sleep Outs" - a giant tree house and spend a night under the African Skies.

Charming chalets, a little bit too cold for us, also in the restaurant (wintertime!) , friendly staff, good food, and fantastic game drives due to our guide Vusi. We saw a leppard eating an impala, wild dogs, which is most unusual. Thks.

Thank you for your feedback. This passed winter was an exceptionally cold one for all of us as well! Best to pack your scarves and beanies, gloves and jackets when visiting the Kruger during winter. One great positive is the wonderful sightings one gets to see during the drier, colder months. We do hope you visit us again, maybe in Spring or Autumn when it's not too cold or too hot. Warm Regards

What an incredible experience! We come regularly to visit the Kruger-nationalpark, but our 3-nights-stay at Rhino Walking Safaris was the best experience we ever had. The camp ist beautifully situated in the middle of the bush, with all the comfort you need, but in total respect for the nature around. The service was excellent in every way- from delicious food to the organization of the day- everything was perfect for us. But the best thing, of course, where the morning- and evening walks with our two guides Darryl and Orens. We learned a lot about animals, plants and we were lucky to see many of them: from buffalos to lions, elephants, hyenas or even wild dogs, an black rhino and a serval - it was amazing! And we always felt save. Thanks again to our guides.

If you have the opportunity to stay here - go fir it. It was the highlight of our South Africa trip. The team was exceptional in their work, but what made it special was that they really made us feel at home. The food was the best we had in South Africa and the experience of sleeping in these luxurious tents was something else as well. Thank you very much for taking such good care of us! To our safari guide Darryl: Thank you especially for your patience with all our questions - and we had a lot of them :D. Being able to see the animals and to learn so much about them was amazing. If you’re looking for a great overall experience and the chance to see the nature of South Africa not only from the top of a car, this is the perfect place for it.

This is the place to stay, in the park versus having to drive in and out everyday. Staying in a luxurious tent watching elephants and hyenas walking by, 5 star dining, amazing waking safaries tracking rhinos, hippos, this is the way to do a safari. The evening drives combine perfectly with the walks, seeing every animal you could wish for and ending with sun downers in the most beautiful settings. Highly recommend!!!

Thoroughly relaxing, well paced adventure with access to a plethora of animals when their mood dictates...excellent for observing. Food, accommodation and staff exceeded expectation - thoroughly recommended for anyone wishing to get away from the rat race.

We stayed for two nights in Plains camp and had one night ‘under the stars’. The accommodation, food, company and sightings were memorable, exceptional and a highlight of our four week trip in South Africa. Arrival: make sure you follow the directions sent from the lodge, do not rely on sat nav. Easy to follow, car is parked at the lodge you are then transferred to the camp which is about 20 minutes. Accommodation: gorgeous, large comfy bed, bathroom good. Great tents. Food: we are both vegetarian, the food was fantastic and there was certainly plenty of it. Drink prices very very reasonable. Days: we did two bush walks a day, one in the morning the other in the early evening (before dark). We were lucky and had exceptional sightings but also learnt so much about the birds, flora and animal habits. Great guide, thank you Andrew plus colleagues. No rush. We were lucky enough to sleep under the stars at another camp about 20 minutes further in the bush for one night. Beautiful night, mesh tent in the tops of trees. This is definitely an experience not to be missed. After this we stayed in a ‘posh’ lodge with game drives, great but not a patch on Plains camp.

Had a great stay here. The main thing going in is to set expectations on animals. Bottom line is a variety of animals visit the plains camp and are viewable right outside the tents. But this is more of a bush walk experience than “safari”. Just don’t expect much in terms of animal encounters during the walks, and enjoy the nature itself. The guides take meals with the guests so it is a very personal experience which is also nice.

Dear Dave Dewey Thank you for the great review. You are right, sightings on foot are not as frequent as from a vehicle, but they are super special, and appreciation of nature in between is the right mindset to go with. It's a lovely alternative to game drives, with more opportunity to use all of your senses. A combined booking of Rhino Post (for game drives) and Plains Camp (for walking safaris) is ideal if one has the time. We are really pleased that you enjoyed your stay and appreciate you taking the time to post a review. Kind regards Nikki Meyer Operations Manager

We have been to Plains Camp three times and every time we enjoy it more. A wonderful place to recharge. Love that there is no Wifi at Plains Camp, don't change that in a world where there is internet overload everywhere. Our four young adults loved it!

Dear Claire You really are a loyal supporter, and have become one of the family. So glad you had another lovely stay, and hopefully next time I'll see you, it was wonderful to meet you and your family on the previous trip. We love it when guests turn into lifelong friends. We appreciate the time and trouble you took to write a review, and the fact that you appreciate the break from the Wifi - it can be a contentious subject, but sometimes it's good to have a place where you can truly tune out from the busy world and immerse yourself in nature. Kind regards Nikki Meyer Operations Manager

Having never done a walking safari trip before, my family and I were a little hesitant to book this trip however, once meeting the rangers and getting to the accommodation, we felt much more relaxed. The experience enabled us to be in the bush like we never had before and see many things that we perhaps would have just driven passed quickly normally. Darrel and his team were extremely welcoming and we would love to return in the future.
