We stayed there for 5 nights while looking for a property in this wonderful area. The local cook, Maria (see photo below) prepared brilliant local dishes for evening and fresh rolls for breakfast. Their fresh mangoes (it is part of a farm) were sumptous. The view from the terrace of the Drakensburg escarpment was breathtaking, especially at sundowner time. The hospitality was first class, and Nina's energetic approach was refreshing. Alti and Lucas well manage a quality hostel - the best B&B we've stayed at in South Africa.

We stayed for one night, and as it was our first SA. We were not disappointent, but after all we have to say, that in the price area, the quality of the rooms could be better. We had the air conditioning system blowing next to our room, and although this was shut off at night, it was annoying to hear it constantly.

The staff were very friendly though and the food served was good!

We stayed only one night after a trip to the Kruger because we wanted to see Blyde River Canyon. Zuleika is in an area of fruit farming and just a few minutes walk down to a bridge over the river (sadly no crocs or hippos around). The garden is lovely and views across to the Drakensburg mountains are spectacular. Our welcome was fine, though we did feel a touch uncomfortable when told to keep our door shut because they were having a problem with snakes - so the first job was a good look in every corner of the room! The room was suite-style with a pleasant outdoor terrace overlooking the mountains. We were disappointed with the room decor which I guess was supposed to look rustic. Creaky old furniture, painted concrete floors with a few mats scattered around and a toilet room which was just plain plaster and concrete. It was, however, spotless - the maid had clearly done a good job. The shower and bath were good. We ate breakfast and dinner at the hotel and the food was fine, though there is no choice at dinner, but the table settings and general ambience were nothing special. Basically this could be a good place if someone just got hold of it, invested a bit and put a bit of care into the place. It was the poorest of all of the places we stayed in this price range.

Upon arrival we were told that the room was not yet ready (noon) and we were given some friendly advise as to where we could go for lunch and do some sightseeing. Upon our return at app. 3pm the room was ready and we were brought to it but were only given sparse explanation about facilities etc. The room was decorated in a rather alternative style. Several broken bulbs throughout and only one bedside lamp was working since there was only an adapter on one side of the bed. It is a family room and yet besides the bed there are insect poison capsules (for the insect repellant machine) that can easily be mistaken by kids for turndown chocolates or sweets. Two dogs and a cat are all over the place and even walk between your legs when having dinner. Shower was very dirty (drainage cover was covered in hair of at least six previous occupants), a piece of soap of a previous guest was stuck agains the wall... Fridge and kitchen set up is nice, the milk that was placed attentively in the fridge had turned into yoghurt however. Poolwater is brown and we were worried that it would not be good for our kids to swim in, but according to the management it was fine... Umbrella's were down and can impossibly be opened by one person alone. When asking for help a friendly lady was sent that has never seen an umbrella before. For a personal styled B&B the management should inspect more rooms and be more present!! The dinner ( afixed menu that was included in the price) was a poor performance, the waiter did not know what was served and had to ask the kitchen every time he served a course. Starter was nice; main course was oxtail?? Not a very popular dish in a set menu and when there is no sufficient light to actually see what you eat is becomed annoying.. Upon check out the bill still had to be prepared and the manager had to phone other people to get a simple invoice established. I observed that the 4 star Grading certificate in fact dates from Jan 2007. All in all this could be a great place but the rooms need to be clean and the staff need to be trained better or the owners / management need to show more personal attention.

We planned to stay for 2 night but checked out after one because we were rather disappointed.

After reading the previous review I felt compelled to write as my experience at Zuleika was completely different to theirs. Unfortunately, we were only able to stay one night during our most recent trip to South Africa in November 2008. We wished that we could have stayed longer.
The accommodation was very clean and comfortable. Our room, one of the deluxe with canyon views, was very different to the normal style of bland hotel accommodation on offer. It was a mixture of African rondavel and colonial elegance. The stone bath was in the large well furnished bedroom. There was a four poster bed with mosquito nets (which we did not need) a large shower, AC and a lovely outside area for sitting and enjoying a sundowner in the evening. The outdoor restaurant was where we enjoyed an excellent evening meal and a fabulous breakfast. The swimming pool was unusual in design but provided a perfect respite from the African summer heat. The water appeared very clean and we were the only people swimming, so it felt like our own private pool.
The couple who manage the hotel were hard working and discrete, but available if needed. I never saw the dogs in the restaurant, but enjoyed their company in the large well tended gardens.
My only negative comment could be that the road to the property was a little rough, but this probably helps slow down reckless drivers.
If you want a bland style 'Holiday Inn' experience, do not stay at Zuleika. However, if you want a taste of Africa, stay here and enjoy its uniqueness and its peace and solitude. Good food, reasonable bar prices and a gorgeous garden setting with great views. I would have no qualms about returning, but I would stay for longer next time.

I stayed one night early September in Zuleika house and I wish I had booked more time!

I chose to spend 1 day near Hoesdprut for two reasons: 1) I wanted to visit the Panoramic road and 2) I needed a place not too far from Camp Jabulani, where I had an Elephant Back Safari at 6:30 AM. So I really used the place only to crash. Which is a waste: the lodge was spacious and nicely decorated, using non processed materials I think. Very creative approach and design.

I has the Superior room. I think there are 3 of them, all different I'm told. Mine was the closest to the reception and restaurant so it was less private than the other two. The view was nice from our balcony. I think one of the other two room had somewhat less of an obstructed view (by trees) so you could see the mountains clearly. I was in room 4.

The ground themselves are immaculate. There was a pool and a small pond. When we were there they were building additional bungalows.

Booked a dinner there. I think it was 120 ZAR per person and was really worth it. The quietness in this area is unbelievable. It's a great way to enjoy the near Kruger area. The breakfast was diversified and generous, and the setting of the restaurant overlooking the mountains and the grounds is pure serenity. I also heard that they had Hippos on the property but we didn't have a chance to see them, we rushed to our Private Reserve.

Definitely will come back if I can.

Do not use the map pin on Google Maps to find this hotel as it is NOT by Hoedspruit aerodrome. It is just off the R531 - we were in good company, apparently, in not finding it! Each room is a chalet set in well-kept gardens with a huge variety of plants, orchids, grasses, all leading down to a pond at the bottom of the slope. The view is fantastic - especially from chalet number 6. We had dinner (set menu) our second night and the food was very good - well cooked and presented. Breakfast was equally good both in choice and quality. We had a safari tour booked but the drive to Orpen Gate took one hour (in an open safari vehicle, so very windy and very uncomfortable). Far better to drive yourself to the gate and meet the guide there - especially as we had an 80 year old with us who would not have survived the journey to Kruger if she had not been installed in the cab beside the driver! 4 poster beds with mosquito nets make you feel like you are in a princess' bed. The bath is enormous and there are nice touches such as bath salts in a pot, some nougat sweets by the bedside and some schnapps for those who like a bedtime snifter.... Plenty of hot water and good water pressure with seating on the verandah outside each chalet all make for a really comfortable stay. Nice blinds, plenty of windows, aircon and mosquito plugs. The basket in the wardrobe contains a torch, candles and matches in case of power failure and plug adaptors. There is even a room spray should the need arise! These are all nice touches which show the managers of this property are prepared to go the extra mile. I cannot comment on the pool as I never saw it. Apparently there were 14 other guests on the property but we did not hear nor see them Tranquillity itself.

Thank you for the lovely review and for taking the time to go into detail about the facilities. I apologise about the Google Map pin being in the wrong location, the pin was placed by an Tour Agent. I have placed a pin in the correct location but it reflects as Pin B. I have also reported the pin on several occasions to Google Maps as inaccurate and asked the agent to remove it but have had no success yet. I will keep trying until I get a response. I hope you enjoyed your time here and hope to see you again during your next visit to the area. Kind Regards, Megan Griffiths

We stayed here our first night in country for two reasons: 1) After multiple international flights, going to a game preserve right away would be lost on us, in our jet lagged state. 2) We wanted to check out the Canyon. (Okay, and 3, it was recommended as a good place to catch our breath.)

So, yes: Good first night choice, to catch our breath.

Proprietor was helpful with recommending the two main ways to see the Canyon. Her efforts to reach the boat tour company to see if there were seats on the morning’s boat trip were unsuccessful — they didn’t call back — so we chose the sightseeing route at the rim of the Canyon — which was very nice and easy to do all in a morning. No need to drive the whole distance of the Canyon (unless one needed to go that way, anyway). You can see it all more quickly by just staying at the north end, like we did.

My partner and I stayed here for four nights. We made our way to reception and was greeted by a lovely young lady she showed us to out room which was number 5. It was perfect, the view was outstanding the bed comfortable and the bath big enough for two!!
The food was delicious and plentiful. We took a dip in the pool which was cold but a welcome relief from the hot sun. We made good friends with the resident dog she was very cute.
We did our own day trip to Kruger and an organised afternoon safari with thornybush both spectacular. We also visited the animal sanctuary.
We loved this stay and it was a super start to our holiday.
