Travellers' Choice
Situated on 36,000 acres of African bushveld bordering the scenic banks of the Nbesi River, Moditlo Private Game Reserve offers a range of luxurious wildlife encounters and African safari options especially tailored for the discerning traveller. Moditlo River Lodge sits at the heart of the Blue Canyon Conservancy, a stretch of protected land in close proximity to the world-renowned Greater Kruger National Park and is home to an astonishing array of fauna and flora. Named for the gentle beast of the bushveld, Moditlo means 'place of the elephant', and the quiet grace of this extraordinary creature echoes throughout the lodge and its surroundings. Our 16-bedroom lodge was designed to combine the rustic nature of a bushveld retreat with the style and elegance you'd expect of a first rate safari destination. Visitors can look forward to every comfort and convenience, including game drives conducted by passionate, knowledgeable field guides; a full-service restaurant that serves the very best in South African wines and cuisine; as well as al fresco boma barbeques prepared by our talented chefs. Families with kids will be happy to know that we welcome children of 8 years and older. They are allowed on game drives at the manager's discretion. Alternatively, we are happy to arrange a private vehicle for your family's exclusive use at an additional cost.

We visited Moditlo on a deal that meant we paid a quarter of the price of the usual per person rate, and I believe that if we had paid full price we would have felt quite cheated. The lodge itself is quite nice, with a pool area, bar and boma all available for guests to relax at during the day. The rooms are small and could do with a bit of renovation and modernisation. I feel like they split each hut into two where they should have kept them as one whole unit and included a proper bathroom area and maybe even an outdoor shower. We were lucky enough to be in Room 1, so we had a bit of a view and a lot more privacy than the other rooms. Which was quite nice considering the bath is right by the front door, and other rooms faced the walkway. We also had a musty smell in the room and the faucets had a buildup of lime deposits, and the sheets in the bed had a few tears and some black burn marks on them. The food was good, but again not good enough for the usual rate people would have to pay. It’s more homely than gourmet, and not what you would expect from a luxury lodge. The staff, rangers and trackers were excellent. All were friendly and accomodating, and I cannot fault the service. I feel as though they deserve a better establishment to work at. Overall we were very happy with our holiday at Moditlo. We had an amazing time and the game drives were wonderful. However I am basing my review more on value for the full rate people would usually pay, and if I had paid that amount I would have been quite disappointed with our stay. I think that for the full rate you can find much better accomodation that feels more luxurious and closer to 5 star lodging. I hope management can take both the positive and negative criticisms to make some improvements so that the lodge can live up to its full potential.

Dear Akira, Thank you for taking the time to review your recent stay. These are strange times (Covid-19) we live in, and much as we would love to defend ourselves with regards to your statements it would not make any difference. The best comparison I can use at this stage is an airport, whereby there are only one entrance and one exit and only half the shops are open yet it functions and the objective of flying is met. We had to reduced prices and still offer great food, accommodation and game drives, with limited resources. Unfortunately, the South African market is always our biggest critiques and only paint half the picture. Non the less, we will do our very best to improve in the areas that we can. Best Regards Moditlo Management

I was initially reluctant to leave a review as Gary who responds to these reviews is often rather short and defensive, but here was our experience: The lodge markets itself as 5 star... and has quite a steep rate if you are not getting a special deal, however on google the description is 3 star and i think this is more accurate. The pro's: The staff on the property are wonderful and nothing is too much for them. The game drivers and trackers also very kind and really go out there way to ensure guests see game. The room is spacious and the bed comfy with decent linen The con's: The room has a super weird design and the shower on one side of the room, bath as you enter the room seems to have been plonked there as an after thought and no privacy at all. The tolilet and basin are placed together and room feel is very disjointed. No pod coffee solution, old fashion tea and cheap coffee with kettle. No snack bar Food below average and NOT what you expect from a 5 star property. Breakfast is especially sad. Game drives you need to pre-order your drinks and very sad snacks provided. While nothing was terrible here and for the half price deal we bought the offering was fair, however for guests that come and pay the full price i believe they will be left wanting and there MANY better lodges in the price bracket.

The property needs to improve on service, the menu and dining set up. There is need to secure the sleeping area since roam around freely and a disaster is looming...there’s is no proper security against wild animals and it makes visitors uncomfortable the moment they discover that the area is unsecured. Please make this a priority

Dear David, I am so sorry that you feel this way as we have never had this complaint before and this is actually what guest love about coming to Moditlo, and that is t be close to nature. In more than 7 years since opening we have never even had a close encounter with wild animals within the lodge area. I can assure you that our security is top notch, you might have not even noticed it since the guards are instructed not to be in the guests personal space, but I can promise you that are there. Other than that we have video surveillance and emergency procedures which was explained to you upon check in. As for the menu and food I am not even going to comment on that, all the other guest were happy. Maybe just an idea for you..... Next time tell the full story in your review ! I am sure anyone reading this review will see it sticking out like a sore thumb and far from the truth. I wish you all the best. Kind Regard Gary Geyer Operations Director

Because I liked it so much the first time, I came back to the Moditlo River Lodge a second time, and it was even better than the first time: - The lodge itself is gorgeous, cosy, super calm, - The reserve is beautiful, a true bush landscape with lots of magnificent animals, and as a background the majestuous Blyde Canyon, - The rangers and trackers are excellent professionals, always going above and beyond to find the animals, and always giving us their insights and knowledge, - Staff, whether it is management, cleaning staff, cooking staff, waiters and waitresses are super friendly and nice, and they're all always there to fulfill any need quickly, - The rooms are spacious, beautiful, well designed and perfectly clean, - And the food is great, So all in all, simply exceptional, this lodge has everything to have a fabulous time and live an amazing experience. Just go, and do not hesitate a second. Thanks a lot!
