If you’re keen to get away from the hustle and bustle of life and enjoy some well-deserved rest and relaxation, Blyde River Wilderness Lodge is the place to go. The lodge is situated along the famous Panoramic Route of Blyde River Canyon near Hoedspruit and is less than an hour’s drive from the Kruger National Park (Orpen Gate). Set on the banks of the tranquil Blyde River, this thatched lodge is every nature lover’s dream. A blend of contemporary, African decor complements the beauty of the lodge’s garden, which rests under the shade of majestic Jackelberry and Fig trees. Each beautifully appointed room has an en-suite bathroom, tea tray and mini bar. Scrumptious breakfasts are included and 3-course candlelight dinners under the stars are an optional extra. On chilly nights, guests can also enjoy the mesmerizing flames and warmth of a wood fire in our traditional African boma.

Detailed Reviews
We were upgraded without asking from a rondavel to a luxury room which was great because the rondavels were not well positioned. The room was very nice. The food was limited with a set menu and no choice. As the lodge is 9 kms from the main road you have little option but to eat at the lodge. The food was good and basic if unadventurous. The staff were friendly enough but there was a hint of the fact that guests were a bit of an inconvenience. Overall we enjoyed our stay but wouldn’t rush back.

Room Tip: Not easy to get to alternative restaurants at night. Don’t book a rondavel.

The accommodation was fantastic and the host Pricilla was phenomenal. Everything was great not a single complaint. The property has great facilities and very close to the river it actually runs through the lodge you can wake up go to the river smell the fresh breeze.

Negative notes: I had already read that the road to reach it was problematic, but I found it worse than expected, underestimated in distance and terrain conditions. 6km of dirt road before arriving at a first safety gate, at least 2km on another dirt road and another gate, all at walking pace (to guarantee the safety and security of the animals that roam free in the Lodge).
We arrived in the dark, around 7pm, because we had some problems with road works. At the reception they welcomed us in a very cold manner, despite having notified us via WhatsApp of the arrival time, due to the road problem. I had booked dinner via email, at the reception they told us to go to the restaurant immediately because the other guests were already eating (? so?) and the kitchen would close at 9pm (!). Not even time to take a shower, just leave your bags in the room.
Via email, I had also indicated that my husband and I would take the complete menu (starter, main course and dessert), while for the children a starter and dessert were enough. They wanted to bring the full menu to them too, with obvious waste of food - luckily, in the end they only served the starter.
At breakfast, zero smiles from the waitresses, incredible difficulty in asking for hot milk for me and the children, it seemed like I was asking for the moon...
However, I feel like giving 4 stars to the accommodation. Completely immersed in nature, dinner at the restaurant was delicious (expensive by South African standards: two complete menus, 2 starters, wine, water: corresponding to €53), free peacocks, mandarin plants everywhere, accommodation (Owl House with 2 bedrooms and kitchen) hut style but simply WOW.

We had a wonderful stay at the lodge. It's a beautiful little bush retreat. We regret that we only booked for one night and I wouldn't recommend it just as a stop over on the panorama route, as it is located deep in the bush with an additional 20 min dirt road drive from where Google takes you but it's definitely worth it if you have the time. The staff is very friendly and the food was excellent but dinner is quite pricey. The rooms were beautiful, even nicer that on the pictures in a classic bush lodge style and they even upgraded our room for free. We will definitely try and come back again.

Several lodges spaced out in a very pretty garden, on the edge of a river inhabited by hippos and crocodiles. A very nice experience, the establishment has a mini reserve with giraffes, zebras and other animals that you must cross by car before arriving at the lodge.
Breakfast and dinner possible (single menu). Very hearty.
On the other hand, notify the establishment if you do not want to dine there, otherwise they will charge you for the full dinner even if you only take the starter. This is a fairly unusual practice for Europeans.

Our booking was for 10 adults (5 Couples). We all enjoyed our stay. Thanks to Cythia who made our stay comfortamble and met our desired expectations. Will definetly recommend it to anyone and will difinetly be going back again. We enjoyed the nature view, river flowing as well as the assistants there. Even our cars got washed in the morning after the rain. Wow, we never got our our cars washed anywhere before in all the previous accommodation facilities we visited before. Thank you very much):

The rooms was perfect, and exotic, and the food was outstanding.

Clean lodge with shower and terrace overlooking the river. Staff were friendly. In the kitchen they took intolerances into account. The lodge and the seating area for having dinner could use a makeover. It was quite quiet and not very pleasant to dine inside. Dinner was well prepared and the portions were certainly more than sufficient.

The accommodation was comparable to a tropical paradise. Everything was super clean and the facilities were very well maintained. We stayed in our own rondavel, which was stylish and individually furnished. In the river that belongs to the property and borders the rondavels, we were able to observe small crocodiles and a group of hippos up close. That alone was a highlight! There was a long path between the first and second gates, which we enjoyed walking after the day's activities (or by car). Here we had close encounters with free-roaming ostriches, giraffes and zebras every day. Another highlight every time! The staff were very friendly and accommodating at all times. They really tried to fulfill our every wish!

The 6km trip down a dirt road did not detract from this lovely resort situated on the river. The cottage was rustic and comfortable. Nights were filled with the sound of hippos in the river. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
