We had chosen Calao Camp based on the many positive reviews we had read and we are happy to report that we were very pleased with our choice!
Martine and Jean Marc were the perfect hosts, discreet but welcoming, attentive, always willing to help out and paying attention to details in order to make our 4 night stay comfortable and enjoyable.
I particularly enjoyed Martine's little gifts from the bush (acacia thorns, beautiful stones, interesting leaves, ) that she carefully placed on the outdoor camping table for us to find after a day of exploring. We also enjoyed sharing a glass of wine or a roiibosh tea with them by the campfire in the evening while trading bush stories or listening to a leopard coughing or a hyena calling in the far distance.
Jean Marc took us to the Kruger for a day and we wouldn't have seen as much or learned as much without him. While not a fully professional ranger, he has a deep knowledge and love of the bush and is passionate about sharing it with an interested audience.
The camp itself is friendly, well thought out, extremely clean and comfortable while remaining basic and authentic. You know you are in Africa, surrounded by the sounds, the smells of the bush, and we think that is the way it should be!
We definitely recommend Calao Camp.

You want to be closer to nature? You want a moment of calm and friendly? You want to enjoy the scenery and wildlife with tranquility but with just the information you want? So choose, like us, CALAO TENTED CAMP !
Martine and Jean Marc are extremely welcoming and have an easy way of making you feel at home. The tents are well kept, clean and spacious, the bedding is of top quality.

Stays in the Kruger Park or private reserves with Jean Marc are unforgettable memories due to his availability, his knowledge of places and animals.

Only one desire to go back!

+ real bush experience : sleeping to the sound of crickets and waking up to the singing birds
+ lovely hosts
+ outdoor kitchen and dining area with gas stove, pots, cutlery
+ a zip-closed insect-free tent with nice and long bed (my husband is tall and he liked it)
+ solar lamps at night
+ they had a nice big dog, and the neighboring property had a very friendly dog as well. My husband, who is generally not comfortable around dogs, was actually enjoying their company.

+/- outdoor toilet & bathroom : it gives you a more authentic experience of being out in the open, but is a free entry to all the insects and flies

- insects, insects and insects : this is why i gave it 3 stars.. they were everywhere except the tent. haven't seen so many of them before ( and I have been camping before.. here, i can't imagine opening my sleeping bag and sleeping in it on the ground..), may be it was because it had just rained, not sure.
- bring your own torchlight : they gave us a lamp, but that may not always be available or charged up.
- cash only

If you enjoy the outdoor bushveld experience, without the loss of pure comfort, then Calao Tented Camp is the place to be! Short drive to the Kruger Park entrance. Surrounded by the bushveld, and quietness. Tents are perfectly equipped, and are very comfortable too. The shower / toilet was an experience in its own right. Everything about Calao Tented Camp is to make you feel comfortable. Will be coming back, definitively! Most probably in September!

Thanks to Calao for giving us the African experience! The owners were very accommodating and friendly and ensured that we had a great time! They are very knowledgeable and passionate about wildlife and the surrounding areas which helped us plan our days in the Kruger! Our tents were clean and very comfortable and we loved the outdoor shower (which is actually attached to a tree)! One thing we couldn't get enough of was listening to the roar of the lions and laugh of the hyenas at night! Away from the noisy towns and camps in the Kruger Park we felt like we were the only ones around for miles! Can't wait to go back!!!

My husband and I and 2 friends booked a weekend at Calao. We were upgraded to their 2 Luxury tents on arrival as there was no-one else staying there. The tents were beautifully done out, yet simple, lovely en suite bathrooms and piping hot water. Management provided all the utensils we required as well as a small fridge and also plenty of fire wood for the evenings, and the camp is run on solar power. It was quiet and peaceful and we enjoyed the typical afican bush environment and a variety of night sounds ie hyenes, lions, jackal and buck. Location is excellent, easy to get to and close to all the attractions of the Hoedspruit / Kruger Park area. Thoroughly recommended, can't wait to go back there.

Love the rustic outdoors. Tents are clean and neat. Basic Facilities, with a touch of special.
Love the open air bathrooms and the sounds of the bush.
Close to KNP and Blyde River Canyon for day trips in the area.
