Me and my other half stayed here for 6 days and we honestly had the most amazing time ever - we did not want to leave. The staff really made it for us - every single person we encountered were the friendliest and most helpful ever. All of the staff are so proactive, friendly, happy to chat, going above and beyond. When we had a day with no activities in our package, they found extra drives for us to go on and were able to rearrange things so we could go with friends we had made whilst there. My other half had previously injured his foot and without us even saying anything, they overheard and gave him something to help his foot - its such incredible service. They're so accommodating, everything runs so smoothly. As a vegetarian, they made food specifically for me which was always delicious. The lodge itself is stunning, there are beautiful locations you can eat dinner in on certain nights and the pool is great. Beds are comfy and they have mosquito nets. And there are animals on their reserve which will drink water from the water hole whilst you have breakfast. I could not recommend this place more!

If you’re looking for a small and intimate African Resort with a European flair, great food and excellent service, look no further than Kubu Safari Lodge.

Owner Manfred and his staff are warm, friendly and very entertaining. The suites are very clean and well appointed. Huge bathrooms!

We really enjoyed the swimming pool and the fact that wildlife abound on this 20 acre property. No negatives here and great guides, you’ll
Love it!

Stayed for 10 nights at Kubu and what a fantastic place. The staff are fantastic, the rooms comfortable and the food brilliant, served in different locations to ensure it never got boring. Our holiday package included 5 Game Drives/trips which were all in the first 5 days. On her own initiative Busi re-planned our trips to spread them out over the 10 days and then the staff fixed up additional activities to ensure we got the most from the experience. The Game Drives were awesome including Lions, both Rhinoceros, Cheetah, Buffalo and many more. And for birders the birds around the Lodge itself are fantastic.
A great place to stay and a wonderful country. We will be back

We stayed at Kubu for 3 nights and very much enjoyed our time there! The lodge has a few rough spots (in need of some updating and TLC) but I am sure Karein and her team will have the lodge in tip top shape in no time. Very friendly staff and great food. Only breakfast could do with a glow up…..a bit too basic and toast takes for ever.
Wishing the team all the best and we would definitely come back!

We spent the weekend at Kubu with family and friends. Such a lovely relaxed atmosphere. Staff are so friendly and attentive. Management go the extra mile to assist. Was so lovely to sit on the balcony and enjoy the solitude, watching birds and having the Nyala walk by.

A great experience was dampened by the atmosphere created by the owner of Kubu Safari Lodge. In their effort to extract more money every single glass of water or cup of coffee came with a rediculous charge. The unfriendly and stingy attitude left us feeling uncomfortable and unwelcomed. Very unprofessional and rude to my group leader. Hospitality would have had us coming back however we will never go back nor will we recommend Kubu lodge to anyone.

I stayed at the Kubu Lodge with several friends, the leader of our group made the arrangements, however upon arriving, during the duration, & upon our exit the hosts continually changed the arrangements finding continual ways to swindle us out of more & more money, I was charged for asking for hot water (for my own tea bag in my own cup) I just thank God that we paid cash & did not give this lady (Nicole) access to our credit cards, I personally witnessed the leader of our group trying to make things right before we left as the owner of the lodge kept raising her voice, yelling & making accusations, our leader patiently tried to reason with her as he further explained this type of behavior was not good business practice & that we would never come back to stay here again, at which point I heard her scream, "good, I never want you to come back!" - If you are planning to stay in this area PLEASE take the time to find a different place that practices good ethical business practices, because you are not going to find it at Kubu Lodge

Our stay here was a mix of what you find on this site. But you have to make a distinction between service and product. If you just want the summery here it is: It is not a 4 star hotel, maybe an average 3 star or a good 2 star hotel not because of the service which is oke (not unusually super) but because of the product. If you want to know why I say this just read the rest:-)

Service:

Because it isn't to big the owners are able to provide personal service which is great but not unusual for a place of this size. Personal attention from well informed employees made us feel very welcome. Up to here we agree with the other comments on this site. But on the other we had this experience in all 7 hotels where we stayed on our trip so maybe the people of South Africa are just friendly (or hoping for tip). Either way Kubu really delivers 4 star service just as you would expect from a 4 star hotel and 4 star price tag (they charge you a 10% service fee over your drinking bill and because it is remote the prices are high allready). To complete the service section, not a whole lot of choice at dinner (buffet)

Product:

On the other hand we have the product which is providing a comfortable (4 star), clean, safe place to stay. This is where Kubu Safari Lodge is crap. We immediately admit being spoiled but you are looking at a 4 star accommodation so this is the standard used for the judgement of the product. It starts at the very beginning where a sloppy closed gate (well fence really) with just a small sign saying the lodge must be near somewhere. It was so bad, we could not belive that was still used as an entrance so we drove by!!

Behind the fence/gate was a road so terrible I want to appologise to all roads in the world for calling it a road. Full of wholes and rocks. We could hardly drive on it without a 4 wheel drive (wholes where to steep, it scratched the bottom of the car a couple of times). We drove 3000 KM through South Africa so seen our share of bad roads but this beats them all!

Once we reached the lodge there was nobody behind the reception. We had to wait for about 10 minutes because they where all out giving there perfect service somewhere else. The rest of the public area is fine with a swiming pool/bar and everything.

Now the rooms... We could wright a book on the rooms but the main thing is it's not 4 stars. No TV (which you wont miss because you are out all day and will sleep early), No phone, No fridge, No bathtub, No internet, No musquito repelent plug (just something to use outside), No airconditioning and No decent musquito net in front of the windows. But mind you this is in a Malaria area!!

What you do get are rats in the roof (that's not uncommon in africastyled huts), insects of all shapes and sizes, pretty spacious room (not big but not small either) which a fan alone can not cool at all, two separate beds, a musquito net around the bed area (with wholes in it...) and a cleaning lady that doesn't clean up the dead bugs.

They do not change glasses, bed sheets and towles every day or every other day in there effort to be environmental friendly which we think is a good thing but is good to know if you are very keen on hygiene.

So in the end this place just doesn't deliver the quality you would expect from a 4 star hotel. So don't get your expectation and hopes up then you will be fine. If you don't expect anything not getting anything doesn't feel to bad. But having said that you are paying for it so look for better options!

Unfortunately the lodge is not worth its high fees, and the website photos are very deceiving, and that is upsetting.
If you are hoping to get the mountains scenic view that you find on the website photos, forget it! Those beautiful hills on the website cannot be seen from the lodge, in fact they are far away from Kubu Lodge, and so there is no scenic view like on the website. In fact the whole lodge looks so glamorous on the website, but the accommodation is extremely basic.
I read other reviews and I can understand that maybe other foreigners might enjoy their stay at the lodge, if it’s the first time they visit South Africa and they are not used to our high standards of the South African hospitality industry, but if they know better and can do comparisons, they will see that the lodge is not worth the prices that the owners charge.
Be prepare for no air-conditioning, in the mid of soaring African temperatures, at night one bakes in the room, no fresh air, no breeze. The lodge is surrounded by thick bush so it is suffocating.
I can understand to some extend that there is not TV or Internet facilities but the lodge does not have credit card facilities either, so payments are in cash. And believe me you will need extra cash as guests have to pay for everything, unlike other lodges that offer as part of their price other incentives, or extras, but not at this lodge. I must ad that breakfast is inclusive on the price (the only thing) but extremely basic, and poor.
Well never again will stay at Kubu Lodge or recommend the lodge, it is rip off! We do feel cheated.

My stay at Kubu Lodge was horrible. Prices were over the top, a friend of mine was even charged for a cup of hot water. The owner showed no professional attitude my whole time there. Her
customer service disgusted me. And upon our leaving she tried to hustle (swindle) more unecessary charges. My group leader paid an additional great amount just to appease her, that was above the original agreement.
I advise you look elsewhere other than Kubu Safari Lodge. This is certainly not a place I would recommend anyone.

Response from Kubulodge, Owner at Kubu Safari Lodge
Responded 28 Jan 2011
All these negative reviews result from one group of American missionaries staying at Kubu Safari Lodge. They groups tourleader responsible for the main account breeched the contract and refused to pay the contracted value. This group who claimed to bring prosperity and the word of God to the African people exploited our great hospitality and friendliness to the outmost. As a hotel owner one whished for an internet site where one could express the worst and the greatest experiences with guests. Luckily we maintain good relations with many of our clients beyond their stay and we are assured that any interested traveler will read this defamation in the right sense.

We did the sunset drive but from another lodge in Hazyview and that was in Kruger national park. In our travel documents we would have done it from this location but than it said it would be in private reserve. We did do tour in krugerpark from this lodge during daytime. The sunset drive was a big succes for us as we saw lions coming to the warm road,, leopard in tree, lots of owls.
