WOW what an amazing stay we had at Uncle Richard's place... The hospitality was on another level.. He is very kind and loving.. he made sure we enjoyed as much as we can though we were very noisy with music plus our voices.. The breakfast was 5 star and we cant STOP talking about it... Uncle Richard and Abuti Sipho are the BEST... Keep up the good work and looking forward to come back..

What a wonderfully, amazing cozy and friendly place. Just four rooms, I stayed in the en suite bedroom with a lovely large bed. Owner Richard Finch is a delightful, well traveled thespian with lots of great stories and a superb hand in the kitchen. This is also his home and so the guesthouse has a lovely country home and homely feel. His friend Lunga is also cheerful and loads of fun with a great sense of humour. This was my first time to Durban and for business. Although Ekhaya is about 30-40 minutes drive from Durban it was well worth it. The guesthouse doubles as a seminar centre and has two spaces that are used for meetings, film screenings, jazz performances, poetry and book readings. There is an outdoor pool, but it was too cold for me to even venture there. The guesthouse is located in a very beautiful seaside town called Ballito and the drive to Durban took me through rolling open expanses of land and along the scenic Indian Ocean coastline. I'd certainly want to return with my daughter - this time for pleasure.

One of the reasons I visit Guest Houses is because its a personalised experience and very much like home from home. I am a solo business woman and enjoy feeling safe and secure and most of my work is online. So I also want to be able to work from the environment that I find myself in, without being in the way of others who are checking in or checking out. Ekhaya is one such place and I must say the rooms were spotless and neatly laid out, the breakfast was served when I was ready and I loved the big screen in the living room which was just like being at the movies. Richard, our host, was attentive without being in the way, and his ability to make me feel at home, was just what I needed when I left home. I loved that he saw the monkeys as animals whose home was his home and although they were kept at bay, he didn't treat them as intruders. When you are next in Ballito, pop in and stay with Richard. You will definitely enjoy the experience. You can watch is interview on Youtube as he tells his story from England to South Africa and what an interesting story it is. SA Commuter Online. Or listen to his story on Life is a Beach on IONO podcast.

EKHAYA Guest House - Ballito
Be warned - the family room is essentially one big bed with two single beds next to it, and getting there involves climbing a very steep staircase. The pictures in the advertisement are quite misleading. Upon entering, there was an overpowering smell of bleach. Everything downstairs looked run-down and weathered. The kitchen counter was cluttered, especially with bottles of alcohol. It seemed like someone was living in the downstairs room, and the owner appears to reside on-site as well. This is definitely not a family-friendly space. We left within 10 minutes of arriving. I wish I took pictures to post, we were too repulsed to stay long enough to do that.

Very cosy, comfortable, and clean. , a very close drive to the beach and shops. Richard, the owner, is a very friendly host who really made us feel welcome in his home. We stayed in a family room, with free Wi-Fi, a nice aircon and a lovely shower in the bathroom too. The bed was great and clean, fresh linen added to the comfort. Richard and Sipho his right hand man kindly prepared a lovely breakfast spread for us the following morning too and gave us a very gracious check-out time too! Highly recommended.
