I had a really wonderful stay in Wilderness Backpackers. Annie made me feel so welcome and brought a group of us swimming one day and hiking another. Their open mike night is also a nice way to meet other backpackers and locals.

Hot showers and stunning views.

Absolutely loved this hostel. The dorm rooms are incredibly light and very clean. The views from the rooms are incredible and as there are no curtains you wake to incredible sunrises every morning. They provided a great breakfast for only 45rand with loads of variety. Some nights they also offer dinner and wood fire cooked pizzas but this wasn't available during our stay. Really would recommend this hostel.

I have been working and staying at beachhouse backpackers for almost three months as an intern from Germany (I'm not working there anymore so don't worry, I'm telling the truth). During this time I got to know the place very well and can highly recommend it to anybody thinking about visiting wilderness.
Beachhouse offers different types of accomodation. You can stay at a dorm, at a privat room (en suite or not) and even at the cottage wich provides the best sea view I have ever had in my life (well - the balcony in front of the upper dorm might be equal to that)!

Sea view, great staff and a nice bar - that's what creates the great vibe of beachhouse backpackers.
On special days (if main season every day) it's possible to have dinner (breakfast every day) at the backpackers. The pizzas are great but Annies (the owner of the place) curry is even better.
If you are unlucky and it is not possible to order food on a special evening you don't have to stay hungry. There are very nice restaurants (e.g. Cocomos - live music every evening) within 10 to 15 minutes walking distance.

If you don't know what to do during your stay the staff will help you to find the right activities. You can go canoeing, hiking, canyoning (beachhouse knows the best guide in the area) and much more. Your trip definitly won't be boring.

I hope you will enjoy your stay as I did.

Have fun!

The place is good in general, has an amazing view, nice staff and not expensive. However, they charge extra money for EVERYTHING. Towel - R10, pool game - R5 etc.
Before checkout we asked to make to phone calls to some attractions (we are tourists, we don’t have SIM card), and they wanted R5 per call!!! I never had this kind of thing.

Hi Erel, Thanks for taking the time to review your stay at the Beachhouse. We are delighted that you enjoyed the view and the staff. As you mentioned in your review, we are really aimed at the budget and social traveler market and as such the base rate for the accommodation is low. We are not a hotel and we don't provide all the extra amenities that hotel accommodation provides. The logic behind charging a few rand for a towel really has to do with laundry and returns. Most of our guests don't mind paying R5 for a game of pool, its pretty standard in South Africa and it means that we can afford to keep the table in good nick and purchase new cues and chalk when we need to. We do have limited WiFi for our guests to make their onward bookings and that is the way most of our guests operate. If you stayed in January, I'm guessing that the staff were very busy with bookings and checkouts and didn't take the time to assist you fully. I apologize for this. We are accustomed to very independent travelers but we will keep your comments in mind for future planning. Kind regards, The Beachhouse Backpackers Team

Facilities at the Beach house are good (hot showers, WiFi worked well, comfortable beds, well-equipped but small kitchen). The location is great if you are a beach lover. It is not too far away from the nearest supermarket in the village (> 1 km). Staff is friendly. The place is kept clean.

Like many other hostels in South Africa the Beach house has a bar, where youngsters party. If you are a peace and quiet seeker this is problematic. People barging into the dorm room at night slamming the doors, obviously drinking too much... The bar area was closed after 00:00

Hi Robert, Thanks for your thorough review. We appreciate your feedback. I agree with your points. The facilities are at a good level and the location is superb. We are located close to the beach and village and this is really the main attraction for most travelers. We agree that sleeping in a dorm can be challenging if some of our guests are in a jovial mood. It's not fun to be woken at night by drunk roommates. We do have some private rooms which guests may book to avoid this issue and our staff are usually conscientious about closing the bar at a reasonable hour to avoid noise and disruption. I am guessing that the night you stayed saw some celebrations and I apologize for any inconvenience caused. I will discuss it with the staff and see where we can make small changes to ensure guest satisfaction. We hope to host you again in future. Kind regards, The Wilderness Beachhouse Backpackers Team

The Wilderness Beach House is a very nice looking backpackers given its price. Its location is prime, with wonderful views of the beach and mountains. It is kitted with a convenient kitchen, pool table, well priced bar, and mini restaurant.

The beds on the other hand, even for a backpackers, are pretty bad. The mattresses are lumpy - a friend of mine slept on his DSLR camera the night we stayed, and didn't even notice, as he assumed it was part of the bed. The pillows are hospital style, about 3cm thick, and the room is very hot.

To make things worse, the receptionist of the backpackers started having a loud, verging on shouting conversation with a friend outside the front door at around 2am. This woke me up, and because the room was so hot, I never got back to sleep again.

The bathrooms are OK. The showers are the artic ocean / fire of Mt Doom type, that take several minutes to regulate but have good water pressure.

Ultimately, I would not recommend this place, unless you are someone who loves the beach and will be able to sacrifice sleep for its beautiful location.

I have stayed at the Wilderness Beach House three times now and will keep returning. Annie is like a Mom to the youngsters who stay there and nothing is ever too much for her to organise! One must remember that her market is mainly Backpackers and they get a really good deal. If you want more privacy you have to request the upstairs cottage which is fully equipped and has the most beautiful views of the ocean.

One of my South Africa highlights, very welcoming people and clean rooms. There is a lot of beautifull nature around and the beach is only 2minutes away. Special thanks to Johan for showing the local perspective!

Great views...actually unbeatable. Helpful fun staff especially the bar staff. Pool table. Tv. Great dorm rooms. Clean bathroom. Lots of local activities. Camp fire. Bbqs and pizzas done weekly. I would recommend with how busy it gets, you need lockers for valuables. Plus free wifi. Backpackers need trip adviser and tinder lol (hence not full stars but loved the place and would return)
