This was our first time out to the Underberg and to Splashy Fen, we didn't fancy camping at the festival instead we opted for a warm bed after the daily festivities. Rougham Farm was suggested and was a mere 20km away from Splashy.

Its a quaint little cottage that can easily sleep 12 persons, the amenities are sufficient with nothing really lacking. It does get bitterly cold in winter, sometimes even snowing! I would imagine that the cast iron fireplace would need some upgrading.

The owners were super friendly and always had enough wood chopped for the fireplace. Its decently priced as well.

We had a quick break here on a long weekend and it was absolutely perfect for us. We stayed in The Loft cottage, which was cozy, clean and quaint. Our favourite part was the balcony where you could sit and relax and enjoy the gorgeous view. More lovely than the cottage though, was the farm, which was really just lovely. We took long walks to all the different dams and through the fields, and ventured to the hilltop campsite for the most stunning sundowner views I think I've ever seen. Just gorgeous. Kirsty and Bruce were friendly and helpful hosts and we had everything we needed. The only thing I would add is that the property is close to the road - this didn't disturb us though. I wouldn't recommend this place if you're seeking fancy 5* luxury, but if you want a peaceful, simple break with no fuss or frills but plenty of amazing views, then this place is right for you. We'll definitely be back!

We enjoyed a two night winter stopover at Stone Cottage on Rougham Farm. In general we were reasonably satisfied but struggled to understand the price charged (R2100 per night/2016/4 adults + 2 children) in relation to the very average standard presented by the absentee owners. If this was a graded establishment, it would probably be a two star, perhaps a three star at the most. Had the rate been say R1500 per night, Stone cottage might well have got an 'average' (three dot) assessment from us but we felt quite strongly that the standard was not in line with the rate.
Let me explain in more detail - the cottage was clean and the bedding comfortable, all the self-catering equipment was, although a little used, in place. The barbecue (once upon a time, a Weber) looked like it had been thrown out from the main house some years ago, the other option was a suboptimal rustic stone contraption, neither had been cleaned (nor had the outside patio been swept) before our arrival and we were disappointed. Considering the mountain location (and that we were mid-winter) we could reasonably expect some form of heating in the bedrooms, either a portable heater or an electric blanket, these are inexpensive and would improve guest comfort considerably. At R2100 per day, a TV with a decoder would be reasonably expected. Yes, this is a farm location and it's nice to take a break from TV but this should be the guests choice and not one forced by the owners. Guys, this is the 21st century, TV is now a normal expectation (especially at. R2100 per day). We would have liked to watch the Wimbledon final.
Trout? We simply cannot recommend this as a trout fishing destination, bass perhaps but not trout. We were guided by the owners son to a tiny, grass infested dam, after the first three casts we realized this was a waste of time.
In conclusion, if the owners were to make a few upgrades, Stone Cottage could easily reach a far higher grading, as it stands and at the current prices? We simply cannot recommend this accommodation.
PS: please be advised that the cottage is some 22km's from the nearest village.

We have just come home from a lovely 4 day stay at Rougham Farm. The cottage had plenty of accommodation which had beautiful warm duvets for the very cold weekend. The kitchen was well equipped and the house was generally very comfortable and homely. The bedrooms on the new wing needed heaters but fortunately we had hot water bottles.
The farm is huge and is a working farm so you have visits from the sheep - very cute.
We explored all over the farm and saw some amazing scenery from the Hilltop campsite.
Thanks to Bruce and Kirsty who were very hospitable and supplied us with lots of wood for the cold.
We will be back to try out a weekend during the summer months.
