In the foothills of the southern Drakensberg nestles Castleburn a home to eland, reedbuck and 100 species of bird, who flock to the re-established wetlands.

Spacious, thatched, architect-designed cottages, built of hand-hewn local stone, cluster around Lake Madingofani. Its shimmering surface reflects the rocky summits of the Garden Castle and is disturbed only by the breeze and the occasional trout jumping.

The estate borders on a Natal Parks Board nature reserve, neighboring the uKhahlamba Drakensberg World Heritage Site proclaimed in year 2000 and the famous Giant's Cup hiking trail which passes

through it. For chilly Berg evenings, the private, luxuriously furnished cottages have a stone fireplace; there is also an impressively equipped kitchen. A convivial lakeside clubhouse encourages friendly get-togethers.

If you love peace and unpolluted air, bathing in crystal clear streams, fishing, riding, sailing, hiking, tennis, Archery, swimming.... You'll find the perfect holiday at Castleburn.

The resort has wholeownership, syndication, timeshare, and fractional ownership options available on a shareblock basis.

Castleburn is rated a Gold Crown resort by RCI.

Great that a large number of geese have been relocated away from the public areas as cleanliness has improved. Maintenance is very poor. Things that break do not get fixed properly, just removed. i.e. drawers of the bedside table do not get replaced, just removed so there are no drawers, fridge shelves that are just missing, a kitchen cupboard shelve just missing. One of the jetties seems to have broken and have just simply have been removed, not repaired or replaced. A light fitting gets repaired with a piece of string holding it in the correct place. Some of the small dustbins are very badly dented and looks like it comes from a salvage sale. Water seeping through the roof onto the floor, into cupboards, onto the furniture. This has been reported over several years, yet the same problem remains. Take your own Q10 as the cupboards hinges and fridge hinges squeaked badly in some rooms. A dried, dead frog was found under the bathroom vanity. Most of the sliding doors are not working well and are difficult to open. Weeds growing on the patio, braai grill lose at the corners where the welding came loose. The small dams are very poorly maintained. Used to be a great fishing resort, now people struggle to fish the dams due to all the grass in the dams. Some dams browner and grass than water. When an average fisherman catches three fish in a week, the fishing is not good. Lots of grass in the big lake. Reeds are ever-increasing and reducing access to portions of the waters. I believe that Castleburn will lose its status as a good fishing resort unless more is done than cutting the grass and stocking the dams.
A resort where it looks great from the public areas yet seems to be deteriorating from the living experience and fishing point of view.
We will go back again, but wish that the living areas and fishing will be better maintained. Not good enough to take friends

We treated my Guests to a lovely engagement surprise, and I wish to make mention of Christelle Viljoen, who went out of her way, to make their surprise very special. Thank you Christelle for you excellent service.

My Guests review as follows:

"My fiance and I had a magical holiday at Castleburn. It was our first time visiting the resort and we would definitely go back.
The cottage was beautifully cleaned and maintained, and had such a cozy feel. The accommodation was set up for all of our self-catering needs and we were happy to receive courtesy calls from reception to check in with us - not that we needed anything.
We were also blown away by the extra effort made by the staff in welcoming us on our holiday to celebrate our engagement. They had created a beautiful display of swans using linen, and flower petals on the bed, and had put together an exciting gift hamper for us to enjoy during our stay.
Dinner at the Lakeview restaurant was delicious and all of the staff we encountered were very friendly.
We understand how difficult this time is for resorts with the strict protocols for Covid-19, and they seemed to take all precautions very seriously but it didn't hinder our holiday at all."
Well done! Castleburn.

The resort is beautiful, lovely chalets (3 bed) friendly staff etc.
Plenty of lovely walks and games to play. Trout is the main activity you can go onto the main lake with a small boat (free of charge) or there are also smaller trout ponds, lovely way to chat to other guests.

One drawback is getting to the resort, the road is not good lots a bad potholes all the way from the highway, not the resorts fault but be careful driving, but also worth the road when you get there.
The one disappointment was the restaurant, we had dinner the first night and slow service along with orders taken and waiting for starters about 15 min later told sorry we don't have , re-ordered and waited. Mains same story 2 not available - why couldn't they tell us immediately what was not available. Poor training and bad communication from kitchen to waitrons. Food was ok nothing great On the whole a lovely restful week..

What a beautiful setting, absolutely breath taking and so peaceful. Lots for the kids to do, however rather disappointing that you pretty much have to pay a fee for everything unless you're kayaking. The chalets were okay, a little cramped for 6 people though and the thatch is in need of a clean on the inside. The staff were all very friendly and willing to help. One of the big disappointments for us was the lack of specific drinks at the bar and food items on the menu. It took them four days to restock the items. We booked for dinner in the restaurant a week in advance for New Years eve only to be put at the only table outside (it was wet and cold that night) and the table was stuck right next to the two large braais that were going so we were a little smoked out, I have no idea why we were not informed that there was actually no room for us, we would have rather stayed home and eaten. The Clubhouse needs more umbrellas for the patio area and maybe some furniture and umbrellas on the bar patio to accommodate more people as it's really small. There is a lack of dustbin around the resort and the pool table is in serious need of some TLC. All in all an okay holiday, 8f it weren't for the beauty and tranquility of the place it wouldn't have been that great. The resort needs to seriously rethink a few things.

They don't have activities for kids, my 6 year old daughter didn't have much to do. Except for a very small jungle gym that will not take more than 4 kids. We were bullied by the Resort Manager, I think Peter or Paul, cant remember his name. He came budging into our chalet accusing us of burning a table that we found with bubbles already and demanding that we need to pay, at first he said R1600 and then the next day he said R2000. When we told him that the table was like that when we came to the chalets and he said we were lying because his maid inspected the table before we came. When we showed him that the table had similar bubbles across the table, he said he was aware of the other damages but he will take the table for repairs and they are going to repair the whole table and that will cost us R2000. When we disputed the accusations he threatened to open a case against us and told us that we was recording the whole conversation which is something that he did not declare when he came into the chalet. He threatened us, traumitising the kids, especially my 6 year old still can't get over the incident. He was very rude and invaded our privacy and didn't want to listen to us because he kept on claiming that his maid inspected the table and then later changed the story that himself and someone else inspected the table together with the maid. He was with someone who looked like a security guy and they kept on sharing looks. This guys really ruined our holiday and traumatised kids for no reason.

Thank you for your review. Thank you for interacting telephonically with us regarding your concern. We are very sorry that you did not join in with the children's activity program that was running from 09:00am until 14:00pm daily. The guides are handed out upon arrival with the keys and many of the guests enjoyed the fun we had on offer. The Manager you spoke with on Saturday, was our Housekeeping Manager and the other gentleman was the Maintenance Manager joined by Reservations Manager Aubrey Duma, and on Sunday morning, it was our Maintenance Manager to assess the damage and the Housekeeping Manager. This incident of the burnt tabletop was reported by our trusted housekeeping staff on the Saturday, 8th of October. We are sure that you can appreciate that we have a procedure to follow when damages of any nature are reported, as we unfortunately cannot allow damages to the property to remain uninvestigated and without accountability, or the owners of these beautiful homes would suffer unnecessary financial losses. We assure you that we will investigate the incident and take the necessary action with regards to the trusted housekeeper who reported the damage to ensure that she did follow all procedures regarding damages in the chalet she is responsible for. We wish you many safe travels.

Stayed here in January and genuinely do not understand how this resort has such a high rating on Google maps and trip advisor. My experience was exactly opposite to almost every review I have seen on both sites and I just do not understand how it could be so different. It almost feels like every other reviewer is staying in a parallel universe of this place... perhaps where they are being compensated for their reviews?

Anyway the rooms are just terrible, at least the rooms we stayed in were. This is part of the reason I find the reviews so baffling. I just cannot understand how anyone could like these rooms. I posted pictures of them because if you just use a normal camera without HDR and vibrance set to 100 on lightroom it's quite obvious how bad they are. Our room was _way_ too small for I would say even 3 people. The living area always feels cramped. The TV is a medium sized computer monitor. And the couch is an uncomfortable mess that supposedly transforms into another bed. But bed is a *very* generous word. You are also basically on top of 2 units an uncomfortably close distance away from you on either side, and another on top. So ~5 other families. Also when we got there the lock on the bathroom door was broken (!) and reception did nothing about it beside for assuring me that they had ordered a lock so the next people that stay in the tiny room wouldn't also have the bathroom perpetually unlocked I guess.

There are quite a few activities and hikes to do around the resort. Canoeing on the lake is fun for about 15 minutes. There was a hike we did around the lake which had some cool views, not going to lie. But overall this place was just icky, and bland and way tooo expensive.

I would not come here unless someone pays you to write a review, and even then I would maybe reconsider. This place is cookie cutter FAMILY FUN™®©. Except it isn't even really that because you can never ever relax if there is >1 person in your room because you are basically on top of each other the entire time.

Listen to me, this place = bad. And I am writing this review ~6 months after the fact, I am probably not even remembering half the stuff that annoyed me.

You want my advice,? Go some place with AC and bathrooms that lock.

Spacious cottages well-equipped for self-catering although the Lakeview restaurant at walking distance was a good reason for skipping lunch or dinner cooking. The resort offers stunning views of the mountains pretty much in all directions. There is excellent parking close to cottage and a guarded entrance secure that you and your car are protected. Trout fishing in nearby ponds and rivers is possible and apparently a frequent pleasure, although we did not see anyone catching a fish during the week we stayed. Underberg is a a small town 40 minutes away by car where you can supply almost anything of your needs for the holiday including guided daytrip tours to Lesotho through the spectacular Sani Pass, which is a must not only for mountaineers. If you want alternatives and variation there are several good countryside restaurants nearby. We fancied The Olde Duck and Balam, the latter a nice coffee shop with excellent views by the river on the road to Castleburn. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to escape the rumbling city.

We enjoyed our visit to Castleburn. The location is fantastic, and the amenities great. We particularly enjoyed canoeing on the dam. The lodge was clean and comfortable, and the service friendly and efficient. Our only disappointment was in the WiFi offering, which guests have to purchase, and which was intermittent.

We come almost every year because we enjoy the time there. Friendly helpful staff, good sized fish in main dam (CAR), well stocked small dams with a few 2kg fish added every week. The fishing is not crowded as there is ample space. Lovely walks and losts of varies photography opportunities. Child firendly.

Set in a wonderful mountain location, Castleburn is ideal for a getaway, relaxing holiday. If you are more actively minded, there are plenty of activities in which you can indulge yourself. Although the resort is quite large, you never feel crowded by fellow guests.
