Detailed Reviews
The Lodge is nicely located just a few kilometres from Underberg. We stayed in the oak tree lodge for three nights and a a huge room with a nice view on the gardens.
The food in the restaurant was very good, but unfortunately they ran out of filets the second day. We, however, saw them on the plates of others guests and they looked yummy. The fact that there usually were only about 2-3 other guests in the restaurant for 30+ was a bit uncomfy.
They organized a great trip to the Sani Pass and everything worked out fine. Thanks Steve!
All in all it wasn't a perfect stay. We booked self catering accommodation and were told we should not use the kitchen in the oak tree lodge because it is only for groups. Therefore we can only give three stars for a not so bad place.
The owner really is grumpy, as several signs around the hatchery state. At least you know what you get and if just asked him for help he's always there!

Thank you for your frank comments. Just thought I would let you know that I have removed all signs of grumpiness (the one that was hanging in the restaurant). I'm glad you had an excellent trip up Sani Pass. Take care Shelley

I stayed here on my way to the Sani Pass. On the way in I called and the owner, Shelly (really fantastic person), immediately offered to help arrange things for me to get up the pass the next day. She truly went above and beyond anything that could be expected to insure I had an unforgettable experience. Beyond that the accommodations are everything they claim to be, beautiful setting and quality comfortable room. Wish I had stayed longer. Highly recommend.

The Old Hatchery surpassed all our expectations - every one was friendly and helpful,Shelley and her son (very informative regarding fishing and hiking in the area) were always there with a smile:) The food was delicious served in the Pub on the property. The scenery was stunning- we stayed in the house with our family of 10 from all over South Africa and Vancouver Canada- our accommodation was clean, comfortable and very attractive- I recommend The Old hatchery to everyone that enjoys beautiful open spaces, views and wanting to relax - although- nearby attractions are plentyful in particular the trip up Sani Pass- an absolute must!

It was lovely to have you all and to be witness to a family / friend reunion such as yours. Rowen and Brogan still keep in touch and you should see how big Lambie is now!!

We stayed at the Old Hatchery last month and everything was fantastic. Specious room with balcony and great view, huge bathroom (although I missed some kind of heating) very neat and clean. I would have prefered a handrail at the quite dangerous stairs. The best of all was the restaurant! Amazing food, filling breakfast and EMANUELLE the waiter. He made us feel pampered and extremly comfortable, all guests gathered around the fire place having nice chats. I would not mind to employ Emanuelle as manager for the restaurant and guest house. Thanks to everybody, we'll be back for sure :)

Hello Helga We love Emmanuel too!! Far too valuable to let him go anywhere else. You will be very happy to know that we have taken your good advice and put up hand rails going up the stairs in Oak Tree Lodge so when you come again you can happily stay in Oak Tree 6. Shelley

The Old Hatchery was one option to stay in Underberg area. Most of the accomodations were cheap and looked like that as well. Some of them, good looking - very expensive and for 3 nights not a good choise.
We found the Old Hatchery and it looked quite nice, recommondations high as well. Price per room/night attractive as well. We thought we arrive around 5 p.m., but we didn´t . Check - In closes at 6, and we came around 11 p.m. due to problems with our car, we broke down 100 km before Underberg. The host was so friendly and she watied for us.
The whole stuff is really nice and we enjoyed staying there. Only the rooms were a little bit cold during the night and we needed lots of blankets due to poor heating. BUT: great stay and nice rooms. Big rooms and free WLAN.
The whole area looks great around the Old Hatchery!

+1
This cold Sunday afternoon, we were looking for a hearty meal in the middle of the beautiful Underberg and that is exactly what we found at the Waterfall Restaurant located at The Old Hatchery. Portions are generous and well prepared and the service is friendly👍

This was our first time and we were blown way at the beautiful setting of the deck overlooking a small lake with a river and waterfall, where we were told is often visited by a friendly otto. There are self-catering cabins to rent which are accessible along a wooden pathway from the restaurant. We peeped inside one or two and they are cosy and well-equipped. Daniel was friendly and warm. Our party opted for the lamb curry with rotis which was delicious.
