Arrived Dec 15. - No hot water - No soap or shampoo - cheapest 1 ply loo roll We had booked for the one night at the start of a motorcycle tour and returned at the end of the tour. To late to find parking for our vehicles and no option to return at tour end. On our return we were heading for bed when a large group of guests arrived drunk and rowdy (11pm). Owners simply allowed them to stay. They partied, screamed and jumped up and down above us until we eventually left at 3;50 am without any sleep. Owners of the Hatchery only responded to my messages at 9;30 the following day. First message sent before 12pm. Bearing in mind we had 1450km drive back to Cape Town the next day, on zero sleep. To add insult were overcharged by R200 rand per person per night and the owner refuses to respond to my messages. (we arrived back tired from our tour and presented with the bill to pay). I paid and only later the next day checked the emailed quotes sent to me.…
This was our first time and we were blown way at the beautiful setting of the deck overlooking a small lake with a river and waterfall, where we were told is often visited by a friendly otto. There are self-catering cabins to rent which are accessible along a wooden pathway from the restaurant. We peeped inside one or two and they are cosy and well-equipped. Daniel was friendly and warm. Our party opted for the lamb curry with rotis which was delicious.
We had booked a fishing cottage for 3 nights in Dec and paid the deposit, only to find on arrival we had been double booked. We dealt with Busi. Thank goodness the owner very kindly found us somewhere to stay down the road, which we were very happy with in the end. We then went to eat dinner there and were extremely disappointed that the lamb shank that we had read about was not available and in fact lots of things weren't on offer. The dinner was very disappointing, the fish dry and not impressed with oven chips.
My husband and I visited The Hatchery for lunch a few days ago. The service was excellent. The food was really delicious. Beautiful deck outside with flower baskets and plenty of tables with lovely views. We sat inside as it was chilly. Very cosy and welcoming inside. Highly recommended for a quiet meal or a social gathering. Thank you!
We spent a night here and found the room very comfortable and the bath and kitchenette clean. The restaurant was a short walk away which was great as I love food on site. Unfortunately there were no vegetarian burgers available so I had veg curry which tasted healthy and filled the gap but needed a bit more oomph. The dam is stunning and we saw a lot of birdlife within a short time, could sit there all day admiring the view, very relaxing. Staff were friendly and helpful.
We only stayed 1 night in the little cozy fishing cottage, it was very basic but all you need! The food was absolutely delicious, we had the eisbein and lamb shank with butternut soup and chicken livers for starters, so YUM! Fishing there was incredible, the size of the trout are insanely huge. Management are very friendly and made us feel right at home. We had a flat Tyre and were there in minutes to assist us. We will definitely go back :)
We had a lovely stay at The Old Hatchery. It is a nice and quietly located lodge hotel right outside Underberg. The Drakensbergen scenery is stunning and can be perfectly enjoyed with The Old Hatchery as a base. Furthermore, I would like to recommend the restaurant. Very friendly and kind staff and the local trout is out of this world! Kind regards, Robin and Dirkje
Our stay at The Old Hatchery was very pleasant and for the price that we paid we were quite satisfied with the value we got for our money. We stayed in the “Fisherman’s Cottage” which was nice and cosy, consisting of a queen sized bed, a small kitchenette and a Bathroom with a Toilet and Bath. Being the middle of winter we were concerned about “freezing to death” but this was not the case as the unit not only had a fireplace, but also a gas/electric heater and also electric blankets on the bed … so we were truly toasty ! I will however say that the entire lodge is in dire need of maintenance, in our room the ceiling looked like it was on the brink of collapse and ceiling board above the fireplace had come loose and was just hanging there, several broken tiles on the floor were evident just waiting to cut open a toe of an unsuspecting visitor and outside the unit, facia boards were loose and flapping in the wind with several loose slats on the walkways. Overall though it was a pleasant stay and we will be back based simply on the value and the comfort.…
We went with another couple and although the setting is stunning, the food was a little bland. I had the Rainbow Trout, a little over-cooked and greeted with South Africa's only 2 vegetables (yet again) spinach and butternut, so over this. My wife and son had beef fillet, which was fatty... They had live music on the particular night we visited and it was 2 older men on 2 guitars playing and singing far too loud, you couldn't hear yourself think and conversing around the table was difficult.
Thank you for making our 22nd wedding anniversary extra special. We were given the best room in the house, complimentary wine and a heart made with rose petals was on the bed. At the restaurant we had a bottle of complimentary champagne and the most amazing supper. I highly recommend the trout with roasted almonds. The rooms are very comfortable and having electric blankets made it more cozy as it was a little chilly with snow on the mountains this weekend. The new owners John and Kathy have done a great job with the place. They came to meet us and nothing was to much effort for them nor the staff. Thank you for a wonderful weekend. We will be back.
