Rustic yet modern, Penwarn Farm Lodge can be found just 25km from the quaint, little town of Underberg in South Africa. As you drive down the Khyber Pass, you’ll be greeted with the all the beauty that Penwarn has to offer. The farm lodge lies in an exquisite valley surrounded by lakes, and borders Highlands Farm which was established in 1886. Over 3400 hectares of land is farmed by the fifth generation of Nicholson’s, raising cattle and sheep and planting maize and potatoes for the market. Sharing the grasslands are zebra, hartebeest and blesbok. Birdlife is of abundance and the cranes and wild geese can be spotted from the comfort of your room. Penwarn truly is an animal enthusiast’s paradise! The ambience of the farm is relaxed, rustic, and modern, and is perfect for a variety of occasions including weddings, conferences, family adventures and romantic getaways. Penwarn Farm Lodge has its own chapel, which is situated near the beautiful lake overlooking the Drakensberg. Within the venue, we also have the famous Penwarn Bar which offers guest a thirst-quenching drink and a place for a bit of banter. Penwarn Farm Lodge in Underberg is by far one of the most beautiful holiday destinations we have been to. We just cannot get enough of the place. Beautiful mountain views, a birders paradise with a majestic scenery, the most beautiful farm animals and not to mention the beautiful dams, is what makes it so wonderful. You will never get bored. Peaceful and quiet. Kate and her team are always so accommodating and pleasant. The lodges are well maintained and have all you need during your stay. Comfortable and cozy. Penwarn Farm lodge is beautiful, peaceful, private and really a perfect place to go to for relaxing. The place we occupied was vintage but yet modern. We had a terrible storm on Saturday and the manager, Babsy came to check if we were fine. A professional individual and he made us feel very welcome.

I love that Penwarn is a working farm, yet has all the majesty of the Drakensberg. You truly feel you have the place to yourself - surrounded by the ducks, cows, sheep, buck and zebra. Cottages are cozy, clean and perfectly positioned. We'll definitely be back

Great value, super clean, lovely staff, incredible views, peaceful.... the perfect drakensberg getaway! Honestly don't have anything bad to say about Penwarn Farm Lodge... highly recommend this place if you're looking for something not too fancy but with all the amenities and more. A vehicle with decent ground clearance is advisable however not entirely necessary if you take it slow.

We absolutely loved our stay. The Farm itself is just world-class. The views and surroundings are perfect for a quiet soul renewing getaway after a stressful week. It is beautifully maintained, spotless, and very well equipped with all one could possibly require and more for a getaway. (I was suitably impressed as they even had muffin baking trays Yay! ) We shall most definitely be back again soon and be spreading the word about this new getaway gem we have discovered.

Penwarn self-catering chalets are very good value with a stunning location. Note that there are a few bad sections on the last 20 km of the access road, but if you are not in a hurry these are easy to manage.

An unforgettable experience. Beautiful farm with the most impressive vistas. Rolling landscapes and natural water springs, river and Waterfalls. Rock pools to swim in, hiking cycling etc. Very neat and luxurious accommodation and friendly inviting staff.

We recently had the most amazing stay at the beautiful Penwarn Farm. We stayed in the Nguni 5 sleeper which is super cosy. My husband and I recently had a baby and we were specifically looking for somewhere quiet and beautiful to chill for a weekend. On arrival, the staff were super accommodating and had put an additional bed in our main bedroom in case we needed an extra sleeping space for our child. Was a very kind ‘touch’. Penwarn Farm is one of the most picturesque properties we have ever been to. Around every corner, you have a ‘wow, how beautiful’ moment. We also love our birding and managed 73 species as novice birders. Needless to say, we were super chuffed to mark off a few new lifers. It was a rainy weekend too, so for keen birders, this place is awesome! It was a rainy weekend, but it didn’t stop us from getting out and enjoying the farm. There are gorgeous waterfalls, rock pools, and stunning dams to explore. We had the most enjoyable time and will recommend Penwarn Farm for anyone looking for a beautiful place to have a proper break. The cell phone signal in the rooms is quite poor… I personally loved switching off my phone and focusing on family time. Thank you to the caring staff. We had a very special time! …

Excellent hideaway! We loved every minute of our holiday. Take extra food and drinks(drive to the farm is quiet bumpy) and enjoy the nature, walks, ponds and river. Walk to waterfall and rock pool,enjoy the sunsets.

We went to Penwarn to celebrate my moms 60th b-day...and what a way to celebrate it. The views are out of this world (the hikes, the sunsets, watching the sunrise), the staff are out of this world (thank you Bapsie) so friendly and helpful. The unit was so clean best place in terms of cleanliness Ive ever stayed at - out of this world. We will definitely be going back and taking our entire this time round Thank you Perwarn, my mom had the best birthday and so did we:-)
