Detailed Reviews
Our stay at Birches was nothing short of perfect. The cottage was so welcoming and extremely clean. The attention to detail with regard to comfort and the needs of the guests was given priority during planning. We thoroughly enjoyed the trail down to the river which gave us perfect photo opportunities. Huck and Elsabe were wonderful hosts and spoiled us with their delicious scones, a complimentary breakfast at the Lemon Tree Bistro with the tastiest cappuccino on our departure. Our interesting conversations extended from history to photography to family. It was sad to leave this luxurious country haven but we will definitely return in Spring as it is perfectly located for photo tourism at Lake Kenmo, Himeville Museum and the quaint little town of Underberg. Thanks to Huck and Elsabe for making our stay memorable. ❤️

Oh wow. What a lovely little town they've got here. We were initially going on holiday to a different location and decided to change last minute. We rather came to Underberg. What an amazing choice we made. We loved staying here!
We came across Huck and Elsabe's wonderful cottages. The property is spectacular! Its about 6 acres and it caters to all your nature loving needs. We walked down to the river every day to try and see the infamous otters! Qe enjoyed the nature sooo much! We learned a lot while staying at the Willows/Birches.
Huck is an amazing photographer and knows so much about nature and animals on the property. Made it extremely interesting to listen and learn! Its also possible to swim in river on the propery, as well as meditate!
We even got a free breakfast at the Lemon Tree Bistro which is owned by Huck and Elsabe as well. What an amazing little gem. There's a little shop at the back providing you with framed pictures that Huck has photographed over the years. Well worth it to check it out! Food and service is great too!
Our cottage had a heater which we didn't make use of because the bed was so nice, warm and comfortable! We used our electric blankets every night to heat up before going to sleep. We always had warm water for a shower as well. Our cottage attendant Happiness made sure our crockery was clean everytime we returned after a day in town! She was a huge help!
Thank you Huck and Elsabe for our wonderful stay in Underberg, well definitely be back for more in summertime!

The cottage was very cosy and well appointed. It was close to the river which is just a short walk down the pathway. Centrally located so it's easy to reach other activities nearby like hiking. The fireplace was definitely needed every night as it was very cold. The host was friendly and attentive

This is truly a place to recharge your batteries. The cottage is tastefully styled and well appointed, very good value for money. The location is a peaceful property with beautifully manicured pathways to a river and other quiet spots. The staff are friendly and welcoming.

A slice of heaven, truly.
2 friends spent 2 wonderful nights in Willows cottage (a spacious bedsitter), with private porch opening onto a magical garden area.
I didn't get to meet our hosts, Elsabe and Huck, but their personal touch can be felt everywhere on the Estate and it's delightful. The attention to detail in the cottage and all the little surprises this getaway has to offer made this a magical and unforgettable stay. The Silence is breathtaking. Nothing but the sounds of nature. Absolutely perfect for couples, the air vibrates with romance. Multiple view points have been set up along a path down to the river. Perfect for photo enthusiasts. The hosts have taken great care to provide guests with a memorable scenic and sensory experience.
Accomadation is immacutaely clean and very comfortable.
Great location (but be prepared for a stretch of dirt road onto the estate, you don't need a 4x4, but do bring a car that can manage some rocks and bumps).
We were able to easily book a tour up Sani Pass, and we were picked up directly from the cottage. A short drive up the dirt roads, and there are restaurants and convenience shops.
Highly reccommended!

Exquisite, spacious self catering cottage which is good value for money. It is stylishly and luxuriously appointed with everything you might need. It is secluded above the Umzimkulu river gorge with access to trout pools and cascades. Amongst others, entertainment and facilities include birding, fishing, hiking and swimming. Highly recommended.

I chose this place because the website showed the river and stunning views.
The cottage has no view. Just very tall trees surrounding it.
We were very disappointed. No view of the river or mountains.
Getting to the river is not easy even though lovely paths have been well maintained.
The actual cottage is well appointed ,spacious and very comfortable.
Sadly the gas fire did not work. There is a R20 per hour charge for the gas fire.
Even though there is a sky light the cottage is dark inside.
