Pennygum Cottages are a fabulous base to explore the Southern Drakensberg Mountains in South Africa. Our 4 cottages are set in beautiful gardens and apple orchards in 10 acres of land with stunning views of the berg from each cottage. The cottages are well equipped for self catering - our African Dreams is a thatched rondavel 'honeymoon cottage' which sleeps 2-4, our Lavender Cottage sleeps 4 and 2 children, Apple sleeps 6-8 and our Family Cottage set in its own garden with a private drive sleeps 10. All have braai areas and sitting out areas. Most cottages have fireplaces for cold winter nights and also all have DVD players with complementary DVDs. There is a splash pool in Summer and also rafting and tubing on site in season. There is a small children's play area and daily maid service.

Detailed Reviews
While the outside views were magnificent the overall condition of the Family cottage where we stayed left much to be desired. The cottage needed attention in that toilet seats were not situated properly due to broken wing nuts. The curtains could have been better hung and the charging off R100 per hour if you were late in departing at the required time left a sour taste considering the fairly costly nightly price of R2800.
Wheether it had something to do with the property being up for sale, not to sure, but felt the proce for the w/e was over the top for the quality of the accommodation.

Sorry you didn't enjoy your stay - so many people love it but accommodation is always a personal choice. However if you had asked before hand to check out late there would have been no charge. It's just to tell us as sometimes it's not possible if people are coming that afternoon but most guests arrange before hand. The cottage does sleep 10 so if there are 10 people it's less than a backpackers However we appreciate your feedback and will gladly address at your complaints

We had the whole family - 6 adults, 5 children - spend the weekend in July at Pennygum and it was a lovely experience with beautiful view of the 'Berg. The cottage was cosy, practical and the fireplace brought out many good discussions over a good glass of wine. The hosts, Paul and Sarah, were very friendly and accommodating. Worth another visit!

Sarah and Paul were very welcoming and accommodated our change of room request with a free upgrade to Lavender Cottage as they had availability. I loved the large bath. Sarah greeted us with a hug and it felt like coming home. The views that awaited us and the grounds blew our mind. The Drakensburg mountain range really is something else. The garden has touches of English and we walked through the old apple orchard and took some fun photos. The accommodation is very reasonable and clean. The water is from the mountain that feeds the river and we had no issues with consuming it and bathing in it despite being a little rustic. The 10 acre property is up for sale and could be a great investment with 28 beds in varying buildings around the property. The main house is very well appointed too with private views from their veranda. The road in is dirt with just a few pot holes once you turn off the main road. We were fine driving it in our sedan.

We stayed in the very large and spacious Apple cottage. The owners were welcoming, friendly and helpful .From the front of the cottage there were wonderful views of the Drakensberg mountains, which could be enjoyed from the table on the terrace. The basic but characterful accommodation was simple, clean and perfectly adequate for self-catering, especially the two bathrooms and a large open-plan kitchen and dining room .
All the cottages were situated in beautifully maintained gardens and there was ready access to the extensive apple orchard. We heartily recommend an organised trip in special special vehicles to the Sani Pass and Lesotho; pick-up to and from Pennygum can be arranged.

It was a lovely refreshing place. A bit old and the TV was not working. The mini pool could have been cleaned as well especially since we were with kids. Overall beautiful view and well kept. The sorrounding areas were also very well kept.

Hi So glad you enjoyed it. The TV is only a DVD player and this is clearly stated on the web site. You were welcome to borrow DVDs. The pool was treated daily with chemicals but can't help with wind blowing stuff into it.
