Pennygum Cottages are a fabulous base to explore the Southern Drakensberg Mountains in South Africa. Our 4 cottages are set in beautiful gardens and apple orchards in 10 acres of land with stunning views of the berg from each cottage. The cottages are well equipped for self catering - our African Dreams is a thatched rondavel 'honeymoon cottage' which sleeps 2-4, our Lavender Cottage sleeps 4 and 2 children, Apple sleeps 6-8 and our Family Cottage set in its own garden with a private drive sleeps 10. All have braai areas and sitting out areas. Most cottages have fireplaces for cold winter nights and also all have DVD players with complementary DVDs. There is a splash pool in Summer and also rafting and tubing on site in season. There is a small children's play area and daily maid service.

The new owners have truly created an amazing and relaxing experience once you step on to their Pennygum grounds. Beautiful views, lots of space to relax and do morning yoga, hiking and bike trails are just around the corner - the perfect weekend or holiday get away.

Was such an awesome stay! Had so much fun tubing down the beautiful river! Such lovely people and would stay here again! I 100% recommended this to anyone that wants to stay in Underberg! Will definitely be coming back!

What a stunningly serene setting and accommodation was adequate for all 23 guests! Host was friendly and very accommodating! Even called to check on us and let us know that the storm should subside by the time we planned to travel! Will definitely go back!

Absolutely beautiful views of the berg. We really had a pleasant 2 nights at Pennygum chalets. The chalet was clean and very spacious. Pierre was an amazing host, ensuring our stay was an enjoyable one. We will definitely be back.

We booked the Family Cottage and the Lavender Cottage.
Lavender Cottage was modern and perfect for a short stay. It accommodates 4 people comfortably. It was very cozy. Geyser needs to be upgraded in this cottage. Not enough hot water for 4 people to shower or bath.
The Family Cottage was also very nice, cozy and enough for 10 people for a short stay. However, this cottage needs some TLC. Being an older cottage, a few things need to be attended to.
Lungi is a star. The owners were away during our stay, but Lungi dealt to all our needs. She even provided DVD's for the kids. She never hesitated to assist.
Overall a great family getaway with picturesque views and big fields around the property for kids to play around in. The chimney in the Family Cottage kept us warm in the evenings. There were extra blankets and some rooms had electric blankets.
Thanks to Sarah for accommodating us and responding to all our needs prior to our arrival. We will definitely consider staying at Pennygum again.

Staying in Pennygum was quite a nice experience. The peace and quiet is wonderful. I am sure that all the cottages are different. The African Dreams cottage where we stayed in was quite nice. However, the mats, rugs, cushions, etc. were quite old and could be replaced or refurbished. The hosts were wonderful. The service is quite nice as they do a bit of cleaning up daily. It would be better if they could daily change the towels and provide a few basics like tea, coffee, sugar, etc. That would make it much better. It is well situated, close to Underberg town where necessities could be purchased.

Beautiful location, stunning views. We booked the Apple and Family Cottage. All was in working order, well equipped kitchen. We all commented on how well we slept! Clean with everything you need. Would definitely visit again, thank you, Sarah and Paul - wonderful hosts.

Awesome area, its beautiful, the mountains, the town, buildings, people. Truly glad i visited the area, and would love to go back during winter months.
Very dissapointed though with pennygum cottages. Not what was advertized, poorly maintained, old and worn furniture and beds, no scenic views, no management on site, would definately not go back.

Sorry you were not happy but as you said you had booked the cottage in the wrong town and you must have seen the cottage you were meant to book as ours just as advertised. The views are superb so not sure if it was raining and you couldn't see the mountains We told you we were away but everyone else thinks Lungi is amazing. Maybe you have to have a white person. She upgraded you and you said you loved it. Beds are always a matter of opinion but you thought you had booked in Winterton 3 hours away so.determined not to enjoy

If you looking for a rustic farm style accommodation, then you will like Pennygum. The hosts Paul and Sarah are lovely and the views fantastic. The actual cottage has all the basics and was adequate for our needs- although I cannot see more than 4 people staying in the "Lavender Cottage".
