Pennygum Cottages are a fabulous base to explore the Southern Drakensberg Mountains in South Africa. Our 4 cottages are set in beautiful gardens and apple orchards in 10 acres of land with stunning views of the berg from each cottage. The cottages are well equipped for self catering - our African Dreams is a thatched rondavel 'honeymoon cottage' which sleeps 2-4, our Lavender Cottage sleeps 4 and 2 children, Apple sleeps 6-8 and our Family Cottage set in its own garden with a private drive sleeps 10. All have braai areas and sitting out areas. Most cottages have fireplaces for cold winter nights and also all have DVD players with complementary DVDs. There is a splash pool in Summer and also rafting and tubing on site in season. There is a small children's play area and daily maid service.

Detailed Reviews
My girlfriend and i stayed hear for 3 nights in early May, and what a wonderful place to stay. The views from the African Dreams lodge are amazing. The hosts Sarah and Paul were very helpful and pleasant to chat to. Admittedly it was cold, but the logs for the fire certainly helped!! It was weird having frosts in the morning and then sun-bathing in the afternoon. If you want to do the Sani Pass tour they can organise this for you. A great place to relax for a few days, i would highly recommend staying here.

My wife, daughter, brother and sister-n-law visited from 8-10 April 2019 and stayed in Lavender Cottage.
We loved everything about our stay(my daughter begged us to stay longer).
The cottage was well appointed and had everything we needed to make our stay comfortable and pleasant.
Paul and Sarah the owners were so friendly and accommodating and made the stay even more pleasant.
We definitely want to return sometime soon.

Thanks so so much for your lovely comments. What a pleasure it was to have you to stay. So happy you enjoyed the cottage and the views and the glasses of wine under the trees. Looking forward to seeing you again soon. Best wishes Sarah and Paul

We stayed for a weekend. (Or half of it). The cottage is meant for 4 people but only one person could take a bath or shower as there was never enough warm water. The place is a bit run down. Tv does not work, mats need to be replaced and some other smaller things. Damp on the room wall also does not look great. Definitely not worth the price.

Carina and travelled around Lesotho (on the outside) after a challenge from our son. Thank you to John and Sarah for the great welcome and we enjoyed the stay at Pennygum. The facilities are excellent and we have no complaints. We will be returning to explore the Underberg area.
I could put up my amateur radio antenna and make some contacts from grid square KG40 and Carina and I did a few geocaches in the area as well.

Pennygum cottages are ok. The family cottage was clean enough. They provided linen. Took us a bit of time to figure out the gas stove though, no real instructions.
The Underberg, I found very underwhelming. The activity booklet that was left in cottage was ok but there wasn't much on offer. The supposed Cheesery is just a big fridge, and unfriendly. Nobody greeted us really or bothered to tell us the who, what and how of the place.
The SaniSpoor trails were very boring. Just basically walking through people's farms. Does not qualify as a hike at all.
Ja nee. Definitely not the place for me when I am in the mood for adventure. Think I'll give it a miss in the future.
P.S. In the absence of the owners, Lungi is pretty cool people's. Cool calm and collected. Gives you the space to feel at home.
P.P.S. Was glad I could bring my puppy along. The resident dogs are chilled.
P.P.P.S. The WiFi is awesome :-)

Pennygum is such a delight ! The magnificent views, glorious setting and warm welcome is without comparison - and we had no hesitation in returning for a second visit. This time we enjoyed the romance of the honeymoon cottage, with its traditional appeal. Quite a contrast from the family friendly pleasures of Apple Cottage, which suited us perfectly on the first stay.
Cannot recommend this enough as a great place to explore the Drakensberg from.

We stayed for 2 nights in Pennygum cottage. It's the beginning of the winter and it happened that our two nights were cold and raining. Paul and Sara welcomed us and they are lovely people. The cottage is quite nice and spacious. A bed room, living room, kitchen and two bath rooms. Very convenient.
With that, since it was very cold outside, it was freezing inside. There is a fire place, but it hardly warms a limited radius around it. The bed room and the bath rooms are freezing. There is kind of a plate on the wall in the bed room that is supposed to warm, but you would not even notice that it is turned on.
After the first night when we told Paul that it was freezing he told us that there is an electrical blanket in the bad. We could not have known it ourselves and I wished they would have told us about it when we arrived, anyhow it does not help when you want to take a shower and the room is very cold.
We went to the near shop and bought warm cloths to sleep in at night and that helped a bit.
It would have been logical to expect that there will be some heating device in the bathroom and in the bed room that will help dealing with the cold.
So from our point of view, there is no doubt that the place is nice, Paul and Sara are lovely, very helpful and welcoming, the view is beautiful but.... For us, it was a chilling experience.

So lovely to meet you and so very sorry you picked probably one of the only really cold and wet weekends of the year - there was a gas fire you could have borrowed as indicated in our welcome pack but it was such a shame you couldn't get out into the beautiful countryside because of the weather- hope you had a lovely rest of your holiday

We arrived in Underberg during a recent tour of South Africa and fortunately discovered Pennygum Cottages. The area is superb and Pennygum is a great location and perfect place to stay. Paul and Sarah were very welcoming and helpful throughout the stay, readily advising about the area and making sure we gained the most from our visit. Their dogs also became firm friends! The cottages are of a high standard and very clean. The whole development exudes calm and has stunning outlooks. It is a great area for walking and mountain biking - don't miss a ride down the river on Paul's Tubes or Rafts and also the 4WD ride up the Sani Pass.
Thanks for a great few days.

What a lovely place to have stayed with SPECTACULAR views. We were welcomed in as if we were part of the family and really looked after, all of our needs were catered for. The hosts being so generous and knowledgeable about the area which allowed us to plan our stay and use our time efficiently seeing lots of what there is to do.
I would truly recommend a visit here to get away from it all, relax and best of all make some new life long friends. O shall certainly be returning in the future.
Thankyou all at Pennygum.
Kathy from London.
