Pennygum Cottages are a fabulous base to explore the Southern Drakensberg Mountains in South Africa. Our 4 cottages are set in beautiful gardens and apple orchards in 10 acres of land with stunning views of the berg from each cottage. The cottages are well equipped for self catering - our African Dreams is a thatched rondavel 'honeymoon cottage' which sleeps 2-4, our Lavender Cottage sleeps 4 and 2 children, Apple sleeps 6-8 and our Family Cottage set in its own garden with a private drive sleeps 10. All have braai areas and sitting out areas. Most cottages have fireplaces for cold winter nights and also all have DVD players with complementary DVDs. There is a splash pool in Summer and also rafting and tubing on site in season. There is a small children's play area and daily maid service.

Good comfortable and spacious accomodation ... rooms were a little cramped with all our cycling kit and baggage . Nice setting and relaxing surrounds . Pity we could only stay for 1 short night , rushing around getting ready for the mtb race .

Pennygum was exactly what we required for the weekend. Perfectly and conveniently located just outside Underberg on the Drak Gardens Road. We stayed in Apple Cottage which had plenty of room. Wish we could have stayed longer....

Comfortable accommodation with splendid views of the Drakensberg. Ideal base for exploring with river and country trails on doorstep. Great cycling country. Some wonderful restaurants / coffee stops close by. Pet friendly. Charming hosts.

We had a lovely weekend at Pennygum Cottages close to Underberg. Lovely views and baeutiful lawns for kids to run around. Great trails for raunning and cycling close by. Very friendly and accommodating hosts. We stayed in Lavender cottages which is perfect for 4 people, but tight if you try to fit 5.

After making a reservation and paying the 50% (R675) deposit, we had to cancel the booking the following day due to an accident that prevented us from travelling. The booking was just under a month in advance, giving the establishment more than enough time to fill the vacancy. The consumer protection act allows for reasonable deposit to be kept if a booking is cancelled, but only if the establishment were likely to lose out on another booking, which would clearly not have been the case in this instance. Given the circumstances and notice period, we feel strongly that the establishment was unreasonable in retaining the deposit. Beware!

We stayed in the Lavender cottage. A 2 bedroom unit with small kitchen and lounge. Hosts are very friendly and helpfull.

- Wifi is virtually non-existent - do your area reseach before you arrive since mobile reception is not available most of the time.
- Mattrasses are either not something we are used to or old?
- Double bed in main bedroom is really small so if you are used to a queen- or king size, good luck

Hi Thank you for staying with us. We did say when you arrived that wifi would be difficult as it was Easter weekend and Splashy Fen music festival is on and so many people in the area means a weak signal. However most of the time my cell coverage was good - and it works perfectly well all the time otherwise. The matresses are not king size - they are not adverstised as such and the view is over the beautiful gardens and magnificent views of the mountains but there is a shed in the distance. We loved having you and your little girls and hope they found that the Easter bunny had been.

Pennygum Cottages give you this special moment when you know for sure: you are at the right place at the right time where you should be and no other stay in your holidays will outdo this.
The view is stunning, the rooms are cozy, super-clean and well equipped, it feels from the very first moment like you´re home. And Sarah and Paul are definitely the best hosts of South Africa. So if you´re travelling the southern drakensberg - you´ll have to drop by and book Pennygum Country cottages.

As my twee week holiday comes to a close and looking back I am once again angered and saddened by my experience at Pennygum Country Cottages. What should have been a relaxing break for my husband’s birthday turned into an episode of Gordon Ramsay’s Hotel Hell. We arrived on the 6th of October for a 3 Night Stay in the African Dreams Cottage, we left the very next day due to a BIG lack in Maintenance. Form the Furniture falling apart to rising damp to ending with white mould everywhere in the master Bedroom & Bathroom. You could also see that the unit was cleaned a week prior to our arrival instead of the day of our arrival. I have communicated all the individual issues to the owners but all that Paul & Sarah could say was they know about the issues and they are planning a reverb this year for the cottage. Since we are already at the end of October I am not convinced this would happen anytime soon. Lungi is a very nice person but she comes across as only a Housekeeper and not the Manager when the owners are not there. I feel this is due to a lack of training. I am warning all perspective visitors not to be fooled by all the positive comments on websites like Trip Advisor and pictures on their website like I was. The African Dream Cottage has a lot of potential but currently it is a real dump!! My Husband and I will never again return to Pennygum Country Cottages nor the area due to our experience.

We are so sorry you didnt like Pennygum. This is on the same week as Pennygum and especially African Dreams were nominated as finalists for yet more awards. We have returned from holiday and found no rising damp, or white mould but it is a thatched rondavel. We pride ourselves on cleanliness and Lungi is more than capable as a manager - though perhaps you were put off by her colour- but she would have moved you or sorted out your issues however we do expect our guests to tell us at the time if there is something wrong - you said nothing - We realise some people prefer a 'Hilton" type hotel and not country cottages and I can assure you all the photos, reviews and comments are genuine, but whilst you may not have liked Pennygum for you to drive 8 hours, stay for just a night and then refuse to even visit Underberg again suggests to me you have another agenda
