Pennygum Cottages are a fabulous base to explore the Southern Drakensberg Mountains in South Africa. Our 4 cottages are set in beautiful gardens and apple orchards in 10 acres of land with stunning views of the berg from each cottage. The cottages are well equipped for self catering - our African Dreams is a thatched rondavel 'honeymoon cottage' which sleeps 2-4, our Lavender Cottage sleeps 4 and 2 children, Apple sleeps 6-8 and our Family Cottage set in its own garden with a private drive sleeps 10. All have braai areas and sitting out areas. Most cottages have fireplaces for cold winter nights and also all have DVD players with complementary DVDs. There is a splash pool in Summer and also rafting and tubing on site in season. There is a small children's play area and daily maid service.

Detailed Reviews
We loved this place. We stayed in the African Dream cottage. The kitchen had everything we needed to cook for our 7 night stay. It has 2 bathrooms, one with a bath and one with a shower which made our stay that much more pleasant. There was plenty of space and a lovely patio with a spectacular view that includes Hodgsons Peak. This place is close to Underberg and central to all the hiking locations (Drak Gardens, Cobham, Sani Lodge and Bushmens Nek). It was the perfect place for our stay that included lot's of hiking, running, mountain biking and road cycling. Pierre, our host, is awesome. He has a wealth of knowledge and made so much effort to ensure our stay was even more amazing. By far one of the best holidays we have been on and the best place we have stayed at. Brilliant value! I highly recommend this place!

We stayed at Pennygum Cottages for three lovely nights. Our hosts, Pierre and Jackie (and their dogs), warmly welcomed us. Since the guest in our booked cottage, Hlogoma, had left late, we were upgraded free of charge to a larger cottage. Lungi and Goodness made sure everything was clean and organised for our stay. Each cottage is positioned so that they all have privacy and views of the sunset and mountains.
The cottage is comfortable, spacious and like a home, not a hotel. Proper mattresses, electric blankets and a well appointed kitchen are just a few of the quality amenities. Our first night's firewood, fresh milk and freshly ground coffee were on the house.
Pennygum cottages are just on the outskirts of Underberg and close to good restaurants and en route to the Drakensberg Gardens. A short walk down the servitude takes one to the Mzimkhulu River where one can enjoy a leisurely stroll and do some Birding.
Pierre has lived in Underberg for many years and very generously shared his knowledge of area highlights and offered excellent advice that helped make the most of our visit.
We'll definitely be back in Underberg and we'll most certainly be staying at Pennygum Cottages again.

The new owner is an amazing host and this is the perfect getaway spot for fresh mountain air and a beautiful view of Giant's Cup.
Walking distance from the Cheesery & Nursery, along with a 5min walk down to the river, it offers great activities for the entire family. Would 100% recommend this as it's a hidden gem of Underberg.

My family and I enjoyed our stay very much. The location of Pennygum Country Cottages is so peaceful and units are surrounded by beautiful gardens with fresh flowers. Our unit was spacious and very clean, not to mention the warm welcome from Lungi. Just to add, I also liked the alternatives that are provided in case load shedding strikes. I have already recommended the place to my extended family and friends.

I cant wait to go back. The river and view were amazing. Pierre went out of his way to accommodate and assist us. Champagne on New's Eve!! Thank you.
The tubing was a drawing card for me as tubing down the river twice was my favourite part of the holiday and the bird sightings incredible.

Our weekend visit to Pennygum Cottages was amazing, the setting was picture perfect we couldn't have been happier sitting on the verandah watching the view and listening to the birds. We came to the area as a friend was hosting a birthday party nearby. The cottage had everything we needed for a peaceful weekend and really good wifi, the staff were all very friendly and nothing was too much bother. My husband is an avid mountain bike rider and loved the local trails we will definitely be back to this tranquil part of the Berg.

We absolutely loved pur stay at Penny Gum. Clean, comfortable rooms with tasteful decor referencing area. Personal touches like farm fresh milk in fridge, good coffee and rusks. Close to hikes and other activities. Beautiful walks in the immediate area. Family run with great hosts and friendly staff. Looking forward to coming back in winter to enjoy the fire place. Perfect for families or a group of friends. Highly recommended

Pennygum was exactly what we required for the weekend. Perfectly and conveniently located just outside Underberg on the Drak Gardens Road. We stayed in Apple Cottage which had plenty of room. Wish we could have stayed longer....
