Detailed Reviews
We had our 2 small dogs with us and we had an amazing stay at Chartwell guesthouse. A lovely walk to the beach and a beautiful atmosphere! The location is perfect and if one is up to a night out the are a few places to enjoy. We can't wait to visit durban again, and of course Chartwell guesthouse, a home away from home.

Room adequate, clean, well equipped but aircon would not go below 17C. Our room only had a loose fitting sliding bathroom door which did not close properly and there was extraction fan in the bathroom so not the greatest experience for other room guest. Felt safe and security guard on duty overnight. Did not need breakfast as going to airport early. Good location, short drive to local restaurants and shops. Have stayed there before and would stay there again but suggest you choose a room closer to the pool area.

Visited this guest house for one night on 22 Oct. Firstly the location is excellent - beautiful lush green setting with a beach view in the distant background + Blue Security cameras and patrols to ensure security. Ample parking inside, behind electric gate. We stayed in Suite 7 which is ample space for 2 adults and a child. Room was comfortable, equipped with aircon, bar fridge, microwave, kettle, DStv. The room also has a security gate + a panic button linked to Blue Security. Service is very good - Alvin was on hand to sort out anything we needed and we felt welcomed and safe. This place is so close to restaurantss and Superspar - literally all down the road, so very convenient.

Within the trip planning process deciding about which hotel to stay is an essential component. Chartwell Guest House, Umhlanga should not be your preferred accommodation especially for athletes, families and anyone who take hotel experience seriously. Anyone who is looking for unique, personalised and value-added experience should stay from Chartwell Guest House. Management is not present to help with problem solving

We had booked 2 nights at the guest house. We found the staff to be very unwelcoming and unfriendly, especially during mid-day when the staff refused to offer tea or coffee and we were told to go to our rooms. This behaviour was defended by management to indicate the staff were extremely busy and could not afford to serve beverages at a time outside breakfast time, however we were extremely disappointed to find the staff sitting around watching tv the next day at the same time. We noted ants in our rooms and in the kettle and little help was received from the staff- once again, very unfriendly.
The rooms are average however our experience was very poor and I would not recommend this guest house to anyone in the future. There are many other guest houses in the area and would recommend to use those ones.

Dear Lara, Your poor review is noted. The facts are as follows: You checked in on Monday 12/09 and checked out the next day. Check out is at 10:30am. You requested a late check out. My staff did their best to accommodate you, by allowing you to stay in your room until 12:30pm. You were not charged for this 2 hour indulgence. As explained, a late check out places immense pressure on my staff who must get the room ready by 2pm for the incoming guest who cannot be inconvenienced. Obviously that is not something that concerned you. At 12 noon (90 minutes after our check out time) you asked the staff to serve you tea. My staff informed you correctly that they do not serve beverages after breakfast ends and suggested that you make tea in your room as you had not yet vacated it. You took offense to this and my staff then accommodated you in the dining room. When you reported ants in your room, my staff sprayed an insecticide inside and outside the room. I am not sure what more you would have liked them to do. It is after all spring and there are insects about. With regard to your comment about the TV watching "the next day", I am not sure how you observed their TV watching when you were not on the property "the next day". Regardless, my very hardworking staff do get a lunch break and they are permitted to relax quietly in our dining room should they wish to. It is strange to me that you would begrudge anyone a lunch break. You then checked back in on Thursday 15/09 and requested another late check out. You were accommodated until 11am and again not charged for this indulgence. You are entitled to your opinions as we are entitled to ours. I suggest that in the future you rather book at a 5 star hotel with a restaurant so that you can order hot beverages when ever you choose. Furthermore, if you do need a late check out, it is customary and reasonable to make arrangements well in advance and pay the appropriate surcharge. Janine Archer

We had booked for two nights in that guest house, we finally ran away after the first night !
During our first night, someone tried to sneak into our room while we were sleeping. We woke up juste as he was opening the door and the guy ran away.
We shouted, and tried to call all the emergency numbers displayed in the room, nobody answered so we stayed locked in our room with our little baby. We had the feeling we were in a very bad movie, alone in the house with no way to communicate with the outside world (the police does not answer in Durban).
We were quite shoked, and waited, awake, for the next day to escape from the place ; we explained what happened to the manager who did not quite react and we immediately left the house. He even charged us for this "night" !
We finally don't know who tried to step in our room, but in any case the fact that no one answered to our calls is absolutely unforgivable

Whilst I sympathise with these guests for having a frightening experience, I must wonder how the guest house can be blamed? The guests admitted to our Manager the following morning and confirmed in their comments that they did not lock their bedroom door! No one can "sneak" into a room through a locked door! The Manager specifically mentioned to the guests that they must lock their door and even suggested that they lock the interleading passage door as well. The guests in question actually left the front door of the guest house open (as well as their bedroom door unlocked) and as a consequence, intruders entered the guest house and stole guest house property. The guest house Manager lives on the guest house property and there were other guests staying in other rooms so the guests' comments about them being alone on the property are erroneous. This is an extremely unfair review as it is based on the opinion of guests who behaved in an extremely unreasonable manner and I take exception to my guest house being blamed for their bad experience. My Attorney is of the opinion that this review should be deleted by Trip Advisor as it is highly prejudicial and damaging to my business and not at all helpful to prospective guests. Ironically, 2 reviews below this one, a guest comments on the extremely high level of security at the guest house and compares the guest house to a "compound".

Was ok but service was bad. Staff unfriendly and unwelcoming. No manager on site. Wouldn't go back there or recommend it to anybody else. Much better places and options for the same money. Location is good though, pitty about the rest.

The easy going, friendly and accommodating staff who run this guest house made our stay a relaxing and enjoyable one, even with a very active and demanding tot in tow. The private garden, separate entrance and 2nd bedroom to suite 4 meant we could keep to our routine.
Thanks for a wonderful stay. We will be back.

We enjoyed our stay here, although we have one or two slightly negative observations to make.
We liked the room, and our host was friendly and accommodating - the view of the ocean was stunning from the back garden where there is a lovely swimming pool.
Our host informed us that Umhlanga is very safe to walk around - even at night - we agreed entirely. We felt very safe walking back from the restaurants (5-10 mins walk away) in the dark. What we found weird is that every house in the area, including Chartwell house has electric fences on the perimeter and bars on the windows - it felt a little compound-like as a result. Having stayed in suburbs across the country (Port Elizabeth, Cape Town, Franschhoek, Paarl, St Lucia, Knysna etc), we have experienced suburbs where a few houses have this style of security, but in Umhlanga it was the rule rather than an unusual thing to see outside houses.
Breakfast was nice and tasty and kept us going till about 2pm on both days we were in the Durban area. All of the staff were brilliant, friendly and a credit to the Guest House.
The area itself has wonderful beaches, shopping malls, restaurants, bars and clubs - there is a very trendy, upmarket vibe - I have never seen houses as large as the ones on Chartwell Drive!
