This review is about a timeshare stay for one week at the resort. The resort consists of 63 units that are almost identical. The units are ideally designed for family holidays at the coast. The units have large covered balconies that allow you to have a holiday that is almost independant of the weather which is important at the KZN coast as the weather changes quickly and it rains for a short time almost every day. The balcony is so big that is is equal in size to the main bedroom and lounge combined. The view from each balcony is stunning as the resort is across the road from the beach and sea at the main access point to the Margate beach. There is also a large private enetertainment area in front of the resort which has a large swimming pool, braai and lounging areas and even outdoor gym facilities, so you can stay off the beach if that is your thing. The units themselves are first class with three bedrooms, one bathroom ensuite and another with full size shower for the other bedrooms. There is a full kitchen even with dishwasher and clothes washer, a seperate bar and bar fridge - and lots of crockery and cutlery to cater for up to eight visitors. There is a lot of space in the units. The resort is walled away from the passing public and has security to keep residents safe. Ample parking is available in a covered garage that is part of the resort. The staff are very friendly and helpful and many have been associated with the resort for many years, welcoming one back when one returns for a followup visit.
One unique feature of the setting is that there are palm trees in front of the resort adjacent to the public beach, and late in the afternoon at certain times of year, hundreds of birds fly into these specific trees to nest at night. Amazing to see swarms of birds arrive and dissappear into the palm trees as the sun is setting.
The resort has a very responsive reception staff and a simple internal call gets any problem solved almost immediately.
One new feature of Margate as a holiday destination for self catering timeshare holiday tourists is that your online ordering apps for grocery deliveries and food deliveries that you use in Johannesburg now also work in Margate and everything can be delivered to your door.

Margate Sands offers great accommodation, I booked a 3 bed room apartment and stayed for 5 nights. the place is well kept and maintained however the bathrooms could do with some rennovations especially the shower. Ideally for a 6 sleeper unit I was expecting 2 parking bays since 6 people cannot fit into 1 car unless its a mini bus. overall we had a great stay and would definitely book again at the resort.

Our family spent a week at Margate Sands in mid December. The heated pool was a treat in the warm weather, especially at night. The staff were friendly and acceded to our every request. The apartment was well appointed with stunning views. All amenities were available for use. The spa treatments were professional. The location is a good base for travel to other attractions like the Oribi Gorge, the Wild Coast Sun and the Crocodile Farm.

Margate sands definitely location is like hillbrow. You can’t even go buy food behind from the halaal places. Very dodgy…

That whole area by Margate sands is so run down, even the beach there is not the same and it now has a shallow river to cross to get to the beach.

Terrible

I'm at margate sands at the moment

1st and last time

Unit is comfortable and that's about all the pros there are

Location is bad, being the main beach, it's literally like being in hillbrow. U cant use this beach, have to drive out.

Standards have dropped badly, room was poorly cleaned, floors and table tops greasy.

This holiday, margate sands has lost every indian client that walked in here... trust me... none will return.

Games room closed due to covid, but outside gym is safe and ZERO sanitation. 🤷🏻‍♀️

No staff or anyone around the pool or kids area
Heard complaints yesterday about that too

New years weekend
We were in lockdown in the resort

And non residents were given access to the pool, so u can only imagine

No one could use the pools or even leave their unit for the entire weekend unless u drove out and the roads were crazy this side

In future, it may be the only 8slp in southcoast, but personally wouldn't recommend it for Christmas or new years weeks.

Margate Sands was a Rollercoaster ride. We arrived at 4:30pm and our room was not ready. Check in is at 3pm. Eventually at 6pm we got the keys to our room. The cleaner did a slap dash job of cleaning our unit. We had no towels. Called reception n housekeeping multiple times to bring them, only to be told at 8pm that housekeeping is closed for the day. We were told different stories by different people regarding daily housekeeping. Some said the unit won't be cleaned daily, some said it will. After many calls n requests we were frustrated and called management in to complain. The furniture needs a thorough cleaning and housekeeping needs a serious and urgent overhaul. It's such a pity the resort was such a let down as margate is a beautiful and quaint little seaside town with great beaches.

Similar experience Yusuf

We were told to wait for the keys given a slap dash unit after

There was dirty towels etc in the machine and our laundry came around 7pm because we went multiple times to reception

Pool area is filthy n receptionist is super rude

Really so dissapointed

we booked 6 nights at margate sands. Terrible experience on the first day. We arrived from jhb and it was raining. Eager to get to our room we noticed that the bedroom light was not working, the WiFi codes they gave us didn't work, the TV was not working at all. The glasses on display were mismatched and there was a missing cushion on one of the chairs.we were told nothing could be done that we should wait for Monday. We assumed there would be tea and coffee sachets with the room, we didn't find any and went out to buy some. On Monday they came to sort everything out, however I've never experienced so many things wrong with a place. On Wed we got a call saying that there was no cleaning service on Thursdays and Fridays. We were not aware of that at all. We expected a fully serviced apartment, had we known it was partially serviced we wouldn't book there.
All in all not a pleasant experience hotel wise. The beach and location is great. However even with that I won't choose this hotel again. During my stay they even tried to sell me timeshare or membership and when I refused to give my personal details the lady seemed upset.
I heard good things about this place hence I booked it, this was probably in days gone by since I didn't experience any of it.

We checked in on Friday the 30th of April 2021 at 5:00pm and we made a decision to check out on the same day by 5:30pm! Guests were not adhering to Covid protocols - not wearing masks, some were also consuming alcohol in the corridors. There was no enforcement by accommodation management, we laid a complaint and nothing was done. We found that the interior of the unit was also dated and we could not compare this experience with our previous holidays there (about 2 years back...very disappointed this time around).

My father had chemotherapy and we had an infant with us, it was simply to risky to stay, NOT with Covid on our doorsteps, and it is no longer a vacation spot IF you are seeking a relaxing, peaceful staycation.

I would NOT be visiting Margate Sands again, and I am contacting FUN HOLIDAYS for a full refund. The check in alone made me feel unsafe.

On arrival we received a warm welcome from the security personnel and the receptionist. They gave us a an upper room with nice sea view. Leonard the manager was extremely wonderful to us, on the following day he personally met us and gave us one of the newly renovated rooms on the ground floor. He was lovely and very kind, understanding customer needs, he offered us excellent service. He made our stay enjoyable and memorable. We give him thumbs up!! If you would like to have an excellent and lovely holiday in the South Coast, we recommend Margate Sands, it is a best place for family holiday.

Infested with cockroaches. The staff looked at me like I am the crazy one when I raised this complaint. Joy- the deputy manager- should be let go of. She clearly has not taken any course on how to deal with customers.

No interest by staff to enforce their rules- particularly noise. We were told that some guests consume alcohol and they would speak loudly. I was told that most of them would check out on Sunday and that it would be quiet thereafter. So if you are looking for a quiet time where you won't be sighting cockroaches, do not consider Margate Sands. #FirstGroup

Recently visited Margate Sands for the first time. Initially was given a ground unit which when entering had a urine stench. I asked reception to move me to a higher floor Super Room which was done without any hassles. The stay was pleasant, convenient and relaxing. The newly renovated rooms are excellent, neat, tidy, spacious for a family of 6.

The only issue was the wifi connectivity, which was around 100kbps majority of the time. I believe free wifi should only be advertised if one is able to get minimum of 1mbps speeds. However we were on holiday and didn't really worry about this.

I will definitely be visiting this venue again in the near future.

It's disappointing when a hotel doesn't live up to its star rating. It seems like your experience fell far short of your expectations, and the only redeeming quality was the view. It's frustrating when accommodations don't meet the standards they advertise.

I truly despised the fact that we were required to adhere to a timetable for water usage in the building. Additionally, halfway through preparing dinner, we were hit by load shedding, and despite the presence of backup generators, they failed to function, leaving us waiting for almost two hours until power was restored. Moreover, despite the hotel's rules prohibiting noise and drinking around the pool, these rules were flagrantly violated for about four hours with no intervention from staff. When I attempted to address the issue of load shedding with hotel staff, one intoxicated individual from the pool confronted me aggressively, as if looking for a fight. I tried to leave the hotel immediately after check-in due to the water crisis, which was only disclosed after I had already made payment. However, my request for a refund was met with refusal. As someone with many years of experience in the hospitality industry, I am sorry to say that this experience was nothing short of a disgrace.
