The Heritage Safari Lodge was originally built in the 1940’s as a hotel and was a landmark pit-stop for weary travelers between Maputo and Durban. Acquired in 1996, the gracious building was lovingly restored to its original colonial grandeur, enhanced with new accommodation, and tastefully themed to highlight Zululand’s unique cultural heritage. With buffet-style meals in our restaurant, the wide, welcoming veranda and our ‘human watering hole’ - the pub or thatched boma, warm and relaxing atmosphere is conducive to shared good times and conviviality. The sparkling pool is always inviting, and you’re sure to enjoy browsing our beautifully stocked curio shop for a few authentic African mementos.
We had a six-day blast at Zulu Nyala. Knowledgeable, conscientious guides do their level best to ensure you see the animals in their natural habitat. Plus, they put you in a group with other people, so it's very easy to make friends in a hurry. The website is a bit of a mess, so you're confused about the difference between the Heritage Safari Lodge and Game Lodge. Three miles apart, the two are substantially different. We stayed three days in one and three and the other. Terrific, accommodating people at both. Small quibbles: 1) The food wasn't bad but could use a serious upgrade, both in terms of quality and variety. 2) The gift shops are nice, but the management would do their guests a real service by offering some basic sundries such as over-the-counter medication, et…

OK, everybody knows you bought this on a silent auction for a charity. There are some negative reviews but we can't figure those out. We did upgrade to the better tents but all were fine. Ours was the closest to the zebras that roamed around the tents (T5). As you can tell from some of the other reviews, for some reason you make life long friends here. We had Sandiso as our guide (Sandie) and he was awesome. Honestly, there is something magical. I guess getting up a dawn and seeing Elephants, Rhinos, Giraffes, Zebras, Monkeys, tons, of animals brings people together. We also took the separate tour to Phinda and I would highly recommend that extra tour. We did drive so we were free to go on the extra trips without cost. Driving on the wrong side of the road was…

Three excellent meals per day, comfortable rooms, beautiful gardens, friendly staff, musical entertainment by the Zulus after dinner, nice pool area, and fantastic game drives with great guide, Ronnie. Would recommend to everyone.

I just returned from my second trip to Zulu Nyala. My first trip in 2012 was so much fun, that I had to return. The scenery is incredible and the atmosphere is so relaxing. They offer a variety of food at each meal, which ensures there is something for everyone. I stayed the in tented cabins both trips. There’s no TV or AC in these units, but I prefer it that way...why go all the way to South Africa to watch TV (you can do that at home). It was 90’ while we were there, but we always felt comfortable with the breeze through the windows. Our ranger this trip was Chris (senior). He is incredibly informative, engaging, and entertaining. I didn’t think it was possible to have more fun than the first trip, but Chris went above and beyond to ensure everyone in our group had…

We really enjoyed the Heritage Safari Lodge. We had a relaxing time and saw many of the animals. The reception desk was efficient in introducing us to the property, when the meals were and how to access the wi-fi. Note: you will need the 3 prong adapter for electricity, they don't have 2 prong circular openings in the rooms. It can be purchased at the desk for 120 Rand, reasonable. Our bags were brought to our rooms (#25), not the tents. There was a towel issue daily, sometimes they were changed, sometimes you need to request them. The room was clean and refreshed daily. The claw foot tub was lovely and the shower good. The one time I tried to take a bath, the water was dark brown, so I skipped it. The first day we saw the cheetah eating his kill. The elephant lady group…

Having lived in SA many years ago I have been on many game drives however our afternoon drive at 1615 was the best We went with Filemon, who is a very passionate ranger who loves being out in the field. The elephants came up to the car. We also saw rhino, giraffe, zebra, warthog, cheetah, impala. Our 2-2.5 hrs tour was actually 3 hours, he was in no rush at all We were lucky with weather too. Our room was stunning and brand new, very spacious with seating area Lovely gardens including croc pool with beautiful birds Breakfast and dinner are buffet style There was some Zulu dancing and singing performance after dinner

Great hotel and excellent staff. Very convenient to area attractions. The safaris offered through the resort were awesome and never disappointed. Jenine was our ranger guide and she is the best!!! Very knowledgeable and you can tell she really enjoys her job and cares for the animals. The only bad remark I could make is that there needs to be a restaurant or food available at all times, not just during set meal times. And there needs to be more availability to choose the room you want to stay in as there are many options. The newer section rooms are bigger and have better views. The older section rooms are nice but no real king size bed (2 twins pushed together) and a third bed that really didn't make sense.
