Clean & tidy, well equipped kitchen all the basic one would require for your needs. Nice cozy & relaxing pub, Dave is a great host, staff very friendly and helpful. Great spot to stop over for the night.

We stayed in the room with a en suite in September, and we were really sadly disappointed, the only thing that is in their favour is that they are close to the Parks gate. We booked a room with no bathroom and then paid the extra R140 for the ensuite bathroom only to have a leaking shower with little to no pressure. To wake up to no water at all. Only the kitchen had water, we tried phoning and no one was available. Nellie is not at all friendly. We asked if any other animals would appear after we had a frog as a visitor and she promptly told us we South African, we should know. When I told her there was no water, no apology nothing just "oh I need to turn the pump on". To start the morning with no water is really not acceptable at all. We know back packers are rustic and basic. But the kitchen cutlery and crockery need a good clean some plates on the clean pile had mould on them. The gas burner is oily and dirty. Our sheet didn't fit properly we actually woke up sleeping on the mattress with the sheet bunched together in the middle of us. We had a problem with our car battery being flat, we eventually phoned the guys down the road at the Gate camp and they contacted Nellie. Nellie did help us to find someone to jump start us. But also basically told me we had to pay him because she woke him up. Her attitude is actually very offensive. We wouldn't recommend this at all. We emailed the establishment with regards to all the above when we got home and have had no response from Dave at all.

Response from 360travel_11, General Manager at Hluhluwe Backpackers
Responded 11 Oct 2019
You have put exactly the same review on another travel site. We sorry about the frog as Nelly did tell you this is the bush and Africa. We also sorry about rhe water which must have impacted on your preception of our place. We have borehole water which is pumped. Signs on our walls do explaim this. We as well as the surrounding areas have recently experienced loas shredding which you will as a South African be well aware of is out our control. We have now purchased a generator to address this Our place has just 2 months ago undergone a complete new revamp with new beds, curtains, repainting as well as new pots etc in kitchen. We advise you rather book at hotel etablishment in future as youth hostel backpackers do not seem to be in your favour.

This great little backpackers has exactly what you need and more when it comes to a night before the bush! Hot water, very nice bathrooms and bedrooms that are all housed in a cosy property, protected by great doggies right near the main gate. The owner will have lots of good stories and advice for your adventure as a highly qualified bush guide himself. And his right hand lady Nelly, the mama of the house will make sure you have what you need including awesome food if you desire.

This is a very good place to stay when going to Hluhluwe-Imfolozi park. It is situated very close to the memorial entrance gate so you can easily get to the park early. The lodge is very nice, the kitchen is very well equipped and the mattresses are excellent!! Dave (the owner) and Nelly(the manager) made our stay wonderful. Dave did a braai with us and beat us in the Darts competition and Nelly kept the place immaculate. If you are looking for a place to party all night, this is not your spot. Since most guests spend their days spotting animals in the park people go to bed early. We had some excellent sightings while doing self-drives in the park. I am looking forward to my next visit!

When we entered Dave's Place I was nervous about the dogs and stayed in the vehicle. Dave saw us through his window and came out to welcome us and that's when we felt at home. The place is basic but nice and clean. My family was mostly impressed by all the souvenirs, especially the T-shirts on the ceiling and coins on the bar table. Dave treated us with a barbecue that evening. The next morning, Dave took us into the park with his vehicle. He professionally answered every question about wildlife we threw at him and with a little explanation about the habits of the wild. He also promised us that we would not leave the park unless we saw lions. After he treated us to a wonderful lunch at the Hill Top camp, he fulfilled his promise and took us straight to the lions as if he knew exactly where they were hiding. He knows the park like the palm of his hand, but go and experience for yourself by visiting Dave's Place. You won't be disappointed!

I spent two nights here during my South Africa trip. It has this coming home vibe to it. Would recommend this place. Its an excellent base to explore the nearby parks and to meet new people. The accommodation is clean and the rooms are spacious. Also Gary was funny. In short, Good value for money!

We had a perfect stay and felt like at home. Dave and his family offered a great hospitality, when we are next time in the region we will stay there again. In addition, it is just a few minutes from the HluHluwe NP, so a perfect location to start from early in the morning.
