What a fabulous weekend. We had not been to Bayala before but the lodge came highly recommended by our friend and travel agent Sonja Newlands.

My wife and I with our 2 daughters (10 and 13) arrived on Good Friday for a 2 night stay and were greeted by Dave and Michelle. They are both fabulous hosts. They're both super down to earth and chilled.

Our stay included 1 game drive a day with a second daily drive a paid for extra. We opted to do all possible game drives (2 extra) and it was totally worth it. Our driver, Walter (aka Wally) deserves special mention. He was incredibly knowledgeable not to mention passionate about the bush and conservation in particular.

Food was great and the rooms were also most comfortable especially with the air-conditioning - a necessity in the summer months.

Bayala was such a wonderful experience for my 9year old curious daughter and I. We were welcomed warmly and had a lovely comfortable chalet. Minamalistic but very comfortable and spacious.
Our way to the camp felt like a game drive, we saw warthogs, giraffe, impala and a lot of colourful birds.
I love that they assign you to a game ranger for the whole stay there, so you get to know them and feel safe when they are driving you around. They also have multiple land cruisers so try to have every group go on their own on a game drive and not all guests squashed into one.
This allowed us to ask as many questions and stop as many times as we could without annoying anyone. Junior, our ranger was absolutely phenomenal. On our first drive we saw 4/5 of the big five plus loads of other animals. It’s just the leopard, that’s hard to spot, that we didn’t see.
The food at dinner was cooked to perfection. It was a little funny that springbok carpaccio was on the menu after we’d admired so many bucks.
Day 2 was our lucky day. Halfway into our game drive we heard there’d been a special sighting but we were last on the list. We drove around waiting for our turn and heard that they’d lost the sighting. Junior and Wallie encouraged us to be patient and they set out looking for it. It was already dark. Finally Wallie found the leopard for us! Most beautiful sighting ever. 5/5!!!

Reserve is stunning, great views and excellent animal sightings. It is also fairly large so each game drive feels different which is great! Very diverse range of animals and birds. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Guides are extremely knowledgeable, friendly, helpful. They also make every effort to try to show you what you are interested in which is great.

The lodge main area is very nice. Awesome pool area and layout.

Our only improvement suggestion was that we felt the accommodation is very basic and did not compare to the luxury feeling of other private reserves we stayed at in terms of views, facilities and in terms of isolation. Units are mostly adjoined, so you could hear the neighbors every so often. They are not elevated and the surrounding area is flat so there is very little view from the rooms. Was also slightly difficult to rest during the day with the cleaning / maintenance which happens (perhaps the lodge could consider completing this strictly while game drives take place?). Apart from that, the rooms are extremely clean and well serviced in the morning and evenings.

The meals were great and the lodge made a great effort to cater for our specific dietary requirements which was greatly appreciated.

Generally we travel out of Kzn for our annual wilderness and safari tours until we came across Bayala Safari Camp. It is by no means a camp - think luxury treatment and service in the bush with and a short drive from Durban which can be a weekend away. Game viewing was amazing - lions eating zebra on 2 different occasions and the ranger went above and beyond to make sure we got the viewings we wanted as cats are the most difficult and we got to see lion and cheetah. Food was delicious and generous helpings and even though there was no TV for catching up on sports you never needed it as it was such a fulfilling schedule. Highly recommend the team and staff at the lodge. We could not believe that this lodge is so close to Durban and we hope that there pricing is aimed at capturing the local RSA tourists as the general feeling amongst KZN travelers is that the lodges are more catered to the international community.

My family and I had an incredible stay at Bayala last week! The lodge is an easy 3 hour drive from King Shaka airport. On arrival our rooms were bright and airy with air conditioning and all amenities we needed. The quality of food was really good and the common area had a chilled vibe with plenty of space for different groups of guests.
Staff were all very welcoming and friendly.
We enjoyed every second of our game drives with so many special sightings. I was truly blown away by the lush diverse landscape in this reserve.
A wonderful stay with so many happy memories. Already planning our return trip!

We had a wonderful time, it was perfect for a family with you kids. Our guide Emma was wonderful with the children and had an incredible knowledge particularly of the birds. Our only criticism would be that it was frustrating when we booked to find out that so many things that would ordinarily have been included in the rate were extra. They were well priced extras so we feel that if we had just been quoted the rate up front to include things like lunch (which is very fairly priced) and a full game drive vehicle cost it would have been preferable. Maybe it's just us but we have become used to safaris giving an all inclusive rate so we feel irritated when it is not so. Just a suggestion, it doesn't stop us coming back and we would certainly do so hopefully soon. An idea would also to be to have snacks in the form of biscuits, fruit or chips readily available for children in between meals as they tend to need to eat more often than adults.

this was a much needed getaway into the bush and had great value. Try your best to pay for 2 game drives a day up front.
the rooms were really comfy, the food was thoroughly enjoyable and for the price per night, you don't need these monstrous rooms...you're there for the game and the game is phenomenal. Wally was an incredible guide, who was great with our kids and made our game drives really interesting and fun.
This place punches well above its weight in terms of value.

We purchased a package at a Bishops fundraiser expecting a fantastic experience and were disappointed. We were totally aware that we were spending significantly more for the experience than the value and we did it with pleasure understanding that it was for a good cause.
The front desk and waitressing staff were very poorly trained and had no service etiquette whatsoever.
We have been to many private game reserves in the past which have included some 5* experiences and some 4* experiences, Bayala was by far the worst and a total disappointment and lacked atmosphere.
We had a pleasant experience with management and our safari guide was excellent and extremely knowledgable.
We experienced some great sightings and our Rhino orphanage experience was totally amazing.

Very friendly & helpful staff, very comfortable rondawel, however a little dark in the day with curtains drawn to maintain privacy. Rooms well serviced, unobtrusively, would suggest a few more coffee sachets & especially more UHT milk pods.
Food was awesome & very well presented, bar service equally good, just a few improvements on the coffee side would have rounded the experience off perfectly: despite having state of the art coffee machines available, a barista’s services (&/or barista training) would go a long way to improve coffee knowledge. Most of the machine-prepared coffee options were too milky, lacked flavour (wrong strength) & consistently presented cold, including the breakfast filter option. Staff were not familiar with requests other than cappuccino & ‘Americano’, eg Flat White. Catering to a fair percentage of European visitors, I’m sure this investment would reap rewards.

We enjoyed all the facilities at the lodge a nice size so not to crowded. The game drives were well worth it with the Ranger begin very informative of the wild life birds and the vegetation. Can't wait to come back for a longer say.

Bayala is situated in Northern Kwa Zulu Natal about 30 km North of Hluhluwe. The closest airport is King Sharka outside of Durban. You could hire a car from there. JHB airport is too far
